This course is amazing
I am a former member of McGregor and we certainly had our ups and downs but NEVER with the course. It is fabulous. I love this course and though I have moved away when I return to see family I always play McGregor. I have played here in Georgia and many other states. In my opinion , McGregor is the bomb. It is forever challenging , never forgiving and a great relaxing time. Play the course for the experience. All the noise about lack of practice area and any other issue is just that: noise. This course, in my opinion is one I could never tire of playing
Poor service and slow round
Our group was on a golf trip we do every year in the Saratoga area. We decided to try this course based on some reviews we read online. The course layout was ok but the round was extremely slow. Some greens were in very poor shape and seemed to have fungus. We ended up playing the front 9 twice because the 10 th tee box had 3 foursomes on it when we reached it. Up to that point our round was 2 hours and 30 minutes. When we made the turn we were going to get a drink and quick bite but the snack shack was closed for the afternoon because there was a wedding in the restaurant! We could not even buy a soda, snack of any kind or anything. The pro at the golf club just shrugged his shoulders and said nothing he could do. I would not play this course ever again and would not recommend it to anyone.
Hilly course, decent track
This is an old-school course with a handful of interesting holes and classic features. Lots of blind shots, both off the tee and approach shots. Some top-shot bunkers and some mounding used as hazards. But there a a number of ho-hum holes and the course gets very hilly. Some fairways just track through big undulations and this is not an easy walk. The greens have some decent slope and the fairways are wide enough, though not expansive. It's an ok course for the area but not a stand-out.
Classic layout
Played early in the year. Greens were already in great shape. Fairways were in good shape for this early in the year. They've put a lot of work into the course over the past few years and it shows. It's an old school design that is pretty unique and difficult for the area.
Decent track
Course had a tough winter and shows that. Nice track though. I'd like to see it when it's in its prime.
It's been hit with winter kill
You could see the weather damage to both
fairways & greens but the staff have done an
excellent job of providing a very good golfing
experience. Only one temporary green (1st hole)
which is a credit to them.
Course design is good but condition is poor
Course design was good with proper length of each hole. However, the maintenance with fairway and putting green is poor with bad condition. I hope this may be improved by better weather.
Tough layout from back tees--the yardage is deceiving.
Alot of blind shots from the tees and fairways. The relatively short yardage on the card masks the true difficulty of the course. The par threes are hard. It's an old school layout and is not a links course as the name would connote.
Nice
Booked an 8 am Wed time and went out on my own. Finished at 10.30. Nice course, although a lot of small hills along the fairways ensure that there are many blind approach shots and visibility issues. Can be quite annoying if you haven't played before and definitely easier if one has help from a playing partner to forcaddie.
A real diamond in the rough...
What a great day! The course is a straightforward, classic design with a links feel to it. Not gimmicky... solid, memorable holes and perfect conditions. Played the ball down (in mid-October) and never had a bad lie. I could play this course every day and never get sick of it.
I am Joe Kehn and Im the superintendent of Mcgregor Links CC. I am so sorry you had a bad experience at our club and I remember the day you were here. It was extremely busy. We had a terrible year with disease and finances were not available for chemicals last year
This season promises to much better and if you can contact me I can get you on the course so that you can enjoy our beautiful historic course built in 1921. You can reach me at jkehn34@gmail.com Thanks
