Dallas' municipal crown jewel in pictures: Stevens Park Golf Course

DALLAS -- Some folks call it the "Little Augusta" of North Texas, while most just consider Stevens Park the best municipal golf course in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Originally designed by Jack Burke Sr. (father of 1956 Masters champion Jack Burke Jr.) in 1922, Stevens Park got a complete transformation in 2001 when it was renovated by Fort Worth-based Colligan Golf Design. Headed up by design associate Trey Kemp, the par 71 is just a little more than 6,000 yards, but it's anything but easy. The course features some sharp doglegs (but not nearly as sharp as the old course) and some tight driving areas, but it is certainly fair.

The renovation produced new routing with new tee boxes, fairways, greens, and 38 new sand bunkers. The greens are Mini Verde putting surfaces. More than 900 new trees were added throughout the golf course along with 2,000 knockout rosebushes to enhance the beauty of the course and complement the surrounding Kessler Park neighborhood. The finished redesign also features 5 sets of tees.

Located in the heart of Dallas, Stevens Park is convenient to both DFW International Airport and Love Field Airport. Easily accessible via the nearby freeways, Stevens Park is just minutes from the American Airlines Center, Cowboy Stadium, Arlington Stadium and the Cotton Bowl.

Looking for a weekend golf getaway in the Dallas-Fort Worth area where you don't have to get on a plane? That's easy. You could stay at a resort nearby such as the Four Seasons or Westin Stonebriar, or you could get away from it all by taking a two- or three-hour drive. The great thing about being in the Metroplex is that it's not far from the Oklahoma, Louisiana or Arkansas borders, so it doesn't take much to get out of the state. So grab a friend or two or three, and get out of town. Here are three weekend suggestions.
