The Dormie Club near Pinehurst, N.C.: One of America's oldest golf destinations has a brand new classic

WEST END, N.C. -- One of America's oldest golf destinations has a brand new golf club, Dormie Club, located in West End four miles from the Village of Pinehurst.

Dormie Club opened in 2010 and was the idea of founder Robert Hansen, a member of the R&A. The golf course is set on 309 acres and will be the centerpiece of a 1,000-acre residential community that is kept well off the golf course. The layout features about 100 feet of elevation change, most of which drops from the clubhouse down toward Cole's Lake.

In traditional style, the course is expected to feature fast and firm fairways and greens that promote various ways to play the course. Sand and native areas line each hole, and there is virtually no rough transitioning between the fairways that are often 40-75 yards wide. There are three sets of tees, playing as long as 6,988 yards.

While the club is planning to be a fully private facility in the near future, the public can play here while the golf course promotes itself by word of mouth.

Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw's newest, Dormie Club, is going about its business quietly. Opened since May 2010, Dormie is a fine addition to the Carolina Sandhills' top shelf. As long as this course books public tee times, good players will want to factor it into their must-play list, along with Pinehurst Resort's 2, 4 and 8 courses, Pine Needles, and Tobacco Road, among others.

The greens at Pinehurst No. 2 were the pride and joy of legendary architect Donald Ross. But the famed No. 2, host of the U.S. Open in 1999 and 2005, offers more to the golfing community than its complex putting surface. The golf course is a masterpiece, writes Brandon Tucker, and set to undergo a facelift in advance of another set of important visitors in 2014.
