VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. -- Pinehurst No. 8, the eighth and final golf course added to the stable at Pinehurst Resort, technically ranks as older than Pinehurst No. 4 after Tom Fazio's redesign of No. 4 reopened in 2000.
Fazio also built No. 8. And unlike the other seven, the golf course allows no space for real estate. Instead, it's 450 natural acres and few parallel fairways. Also unique to No. 8, it's a resort golf course only. There's no member play here.
The golf course is built on the site of the former Pinehurst Gun Club and plays 7,092 yards from the championship tees, making it the longest of the resort courses. It includes five sets of tees and features the biggest and best clubhouse away from the main clubhouse, home to Nos. 1 through 5. No. 8 also offers a large driving range and practice center.
The most natural in appearance of all the Pinehurst golf courses, No. 8 is generally considered the second most popular venue at Pinehurst behind No. 2 -- thanks to holes such as the par-3 eighth and the 14th and 15th, the latter two of which wrap around wetlands. Like all Pinehurst golf courses, No. 8 is an easy walk and offers caddie and forecaddie services.

Designed by George Fazio and his nephew Tom, Pinehurst No. 6 winds through one of Pinehurst's residential communities. It received a renovation from Tom Fazio in 2004 and now plays 6,990 yards from the championship tees and a par 71. The back nine is the most spectacular of the two sides, featuring two downhill par 3s and several holes, such as the 10th and 14th, wrapping around large ponds.

Pinehurst No. 7's greens are some of the resort's largest, but hitting them is tough for another reason: about half of them are elevated. It makes for dramatic, demanding golf on the most severe terrain of Pinehurst's eight courses, Brandon Tucker writes.

Topographically, No. 7 is the most severe of the golf courses at Pinehurst Resort and demands many uphill approach shots to elevated greens, while there are also numerous elevated tee shots as well. Originally built in 1986, the course reopened in 2003 after a 10-month closure to renovate the golf course, which included rebuilding green complexes and adding bunkers and length.
