Best Golf Day Ever
I mean, it's Pebble. Worth the tag, worth the trip, check one off the Bucket List.
It was in incredible shape. We had an absolutely wonderful caddie (Bill - Scottish guy from St Andrews!). It was very windy but hey, that's part of what you sign up for there. It was a perfect experience in every way.
One of My All Time Favorites
Played as part of the 4th of July Stay and Play package they were running.
This course is no joke. Every employee and golfer tells you this, but it is absolutely true. The first 5 holes out on the ocean are exposed to the wind and VERY difficult. Fast greens. Must find the fairway. I can't say enough positive things about this course, I just had a blast. My only regret was that I wish we had splurged for the caddie, because local knowledge would have helped in many places
Staff was professional and friendly.
Stunning. Go play it.
Challenging and Boring
Played as part of the 4th of July Stay and Play package they were running. Our driver told us it is the 2nd oldest course west of the Mississippi (not sure if that's true or not), but neat to see the older homes.
The course was in really great shape. Awesome greens. But the layout is the same hole over and over again. And the fairways are about 15 yards wide. So if you are inaccurate, you have no hope here.
Staff was VERY friendly and food was superb.
If you are playing the Pebble courses, I would leave this one out. Not a good value for the money IMO. If you're a local, prob a fun one to play every now and again.
Gorgeous Course, but Not One of My Favorites
First, it was very windy and chilly the day we played. It is already a tough course and played much harder under the conditions. Played as part of the 4th of July Stay and Play package they were running.
Front 9 was a blast. The Back 9 is the same hole repeated. AND they are redoing the grass around the 17th and 18th greens so within 20 yards of the greens, they were unplayable. And at the Pebble pricepoint, that is lame.
The scenery could not be any more beautiful, though. Great staff, EXCELLENT food.
Papas review
Course is in amazing shape, greens are very fast and small, but love it!
A treat
The course is in beautiful condition. Love the small, fast greens. Love the layout with tees next to greens. Very fast pace of play. We warmed up at Monterey Pines down the road. Splurge a little, treat yourself to a round at this historic track
Truly a top golf course
There's not a whole lot I can add to what has already been said about this course. The first five holes are in fact spectacular. The last 13 sure aren't bad either.
I played Spyglass this weekend, the weather was perfect and the course was in great shape. I do recommend taking a caddie, particularly if it's your first time on Spyglass, since they'll know all the ins and outs of the course. The rough is thick, so getting out of there is a challenge. The traps are deep and are no joke either. Greens probably played to an 11, so very fair in that regard, though putts all break a little more than you might expect.
I think 1 is perhaps the best opening hole in golf, and 3 is the par 3 you see pictures of everywhere. However, some of the holes in the forest are really quite nice. The par 3 12th has a little bit of an Augusta feel to it with a lake on the left side of the green and some flowers behind. The par 5 14th is a nice double dogleg with another green protected by a lake. Visually a deceptive and stunning hole.
There were three things I didn't like:
1) Pace of play was very slow. I think we played to a 5:20 pace when the practice balls on the range say it should be 4:30.
2/3) Lack of a good locker room or restaurant near the 1st hole.
Will probably be back
The greatness of Spyglass
Playing Spyglass a third time, I finally have a genuine appreciate for the brilliance of its design by RTJ Sr.
When I first played it, leaving the ocean after the fifth tee felt like a letdown. The second time I played it, I was focused on score after getting pummeled the first time. The third time I was able to relax and enjoy every minute.
There's so much to love. Name me a better pair of back-to-back holes in golf than the par-3 third and the par-4 fourth? Both are stunning in their beauty and entertaining to play because of the wind off the water. The long par 4s later in the round still feel like a bit of a slog, so I still suggest to move up to the whites for only those holes. The short, downhill par 3s on the back side in the Del Monte Forest and the short par 4s at No. 10 and no. 17 could help mitigate some of the scorecard damage.
Spyglass is a worthy companion course to Pebble Beach for both the AT&T Pro Am and the upcoming 2018 U.S. Amateur. It doesn't matter if you're a pro or an amateur. You'll have your hands full at Spyglass.
Friendly Experience
Found this course more challenging than the slope suggested. Easy to find our way around - always much appreciated on a new course.
Just as good as I had imagined
Pebble Beach really is as good as it's made out to be. The views are outstanding. The course architecture is totally original, yet classic. If you have the opportunity to play it, just do it. Enjoy the best 6,900 yard walk you'll ever take.
Great Value
Nicest staff I have ever encountered.
Nice layout and very well maintained.
Wrong Day - Best Day
It was the wrong day to play Del Monte, because they were punching the greens. But the groundskeepers encourage me to finish each hole, so I just had a fun round dodging sprinklers and groundskeepers.
Everyone (check-in staff, starter, groundskeepers, cart return attendant and even the restaurant waiter) was apologetic about the condition of the greens and friendly. I wish every course had a team of workers with such wonderful attitudes.
It was the right day because there were very few players on the course. The weather was a little overcast and chilly to start, but it cleared and it was a gorgeous day.
Can't wait to play it again....soon.
Great Old Course
Shot makers course. Fast pace, started at 12:20 done 4:15. Nice small greens.
Serious player
The course doesn't have a driving range to warm up. The chipping area is very small and located beside the 18th green.
Great Golf w/ Scenic Views
Went out with some friends to enjoy a nice winter day on a nice course. Course conditions are excellent right now with perfect greens that roll at a medium fast pace but are soft and hold approach shots. Sand traps and fairways are great as well but the tee boxes stole the show. It was like teeing up on perfectly flat smooth carpet.
We walked the course and there are a couple of long transfers between a few of the holes. Hand carts are allowed but you have to provide your own. Remember, the course is cart path only.
Being right on top of the ocean for most of the course you have spectacular scenic views of the surrounding Pacific Ocean and across the bay to Santa Cruz. In fact only three holes don't have views of the ocean.
Customer service is top notch. For some reason customer service is better here than Pebble Beach. At Pebble you get the sense that they HAVE to treat you well (and darn right they do for that price) but at Spanish Bay you get the feeling that they WANT to treat you well.
Spanish Bay also has the best clubhouse of the three. Spyglass is purely about the golf. It has an old building that seems like an afterthought more than anything else. Pebble has fantastic amenities, but you have to share them with every tourist who just came off the bus.
Spanish Bay has separated their facility so the non golfing tourists are over at the hotel 500 yards away, yet it has a fantastic restaurant / bar with outdoor seating overlooking the ocean and first hole just for the golfers.
