Amazing Day at Streamsong Black!
What a track - Streamsong Black gives you all the challenges and risk/reward shots you can ask for. My friends and I drove down from Orlando for the day and walked 18, grabbed a club wrap in the grill for lunch and then played the "Round-About" a couple times afterwards. Will definitely be back!
Very enjoyable
Super fun course with very few places to loose a golf ball. Tough to play the first time without a caddy or yardage book so take one or the other when you play. Practice facilities and bar area exceeded expectations. A great place to play golf!
Golf on a different planet
After playing Streamsong Black one thing became apparent to me, this is like no other course you have ever played both visually and strategically. The course is sculpted into the sand dunes of central Florida with sand guarding each fairway and green. With wide landing spaces off the tee, open areas just off the fairways, and (as previously stated) sand everywhere it was virtually impossible to lose a ball. The far greatest challenge of the course lies in the greens, drastic undulations make putting very challenging and golfers should lower their expectations as to what would be considered a "good putt". Additionally, I would recommend a caddie as he made the day a lot more enjoyable both in company and course management. We played with a wonderful Caddie named Gio who made the day very enjoyable. I am already looking forward to my next visit to Streamsong.
Finally got the chance to play the Black after playing the other two courses three years ago.
Really love the front nine. Wide landing areas, but taking wrong lines off tee will allow balls to run out into waste areas.
Good use of short fours. Punch bowl green on 9 is a lot of fun. Greens were quick. Par 3s stood out, with all four offering different shot values.
Some holes on back, particularly 10, are hard to navigate without a course guide. Spend a few bucks on one.
Final three holes are good finishing stretch. Use the land to funnel balls in on all three approaches for best results.
Finally, everyone always wants to rank the three. Had I played all three in the same visit it would be easier for me to do so. I know that I preferred the a Blue to the Red on the last trip. Recency bias might place Black at top of list.
Great course
I had a complimentary round from my stay at the resort, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The course is amazing. Most every tee shot makes you have to think about what you want to do as there are hazards all over the place. The course conditions were perfect and I don't think a blade of grass was out of place. The greens were immaculate, and held every line. Some of the bunkers were a bit bare, but the reality is that you need to hit fairways if you want to score. I've played a bunch of really great courses, and I can't think of one that is better than this one in terms of design, set-up , and conditions. Just awesome.
Best course at Streamsong
By far my favorite course at Streamsong. I was able to get out early, beat the heat and have a blast. The greens at the Black are amazing, the 9th is one of the coolest and largest punch bowl greens anywhere. The course has it all and is worth the effort to get here.
Great addition to Black Course
Free to anyone paying to play Black . Fun little par three course with several double greens and fast and firm conditions. Had the entire course to myself and had a blast.
Black Course
I have played all the courses at Streamsong probably a combined 60 times. The Black while a great layout, has the worst greens I have ever played and I have played all over the world. The size of them, and they are huge, so much so that you do see sprinkler heads on them, is not the issue, The topography of them is horrendous. There are mounds, valleys, humps and bumps just to start with. A great shot into the middle of a green can end up somewhere on the green or could ricochet 40 yards in any direction. It is a shame to take a great lay-out and have greens that are so over the top. I am sure Hanse wanted to do something different and he did. Its sad that he had to trick it up so much as to ruin the rest of the course. I have played it about 6 times hoping my opinion would change and it has not. The Red and Blue are different but spectacular with the Blue having maybe the best 3 closing holes in the State of Florida. Play the Par 3 within the range at Black if you can. It is fun.
Streamsong Black Course
Streamsong is removed from other amenities in the Florida area, but is a phenomenal resort with three courses. If you can afford it, having a caddie is beneficial, especially when the weather was as hot as we experienced. A couple of quirky holes, but overall a very good layout.
Great course, tough walk
We played the Black, Red and Blue courses on a recent trip to Streamsong. My thoughts:
The good/great:
- Course layout of all three courses was great
- Black has the most difficult greens, very fast. No, VERY fast. They were a challenge but a good challenge and very interesting.
- Greens at Blue and Red were what I would call normal resort course speed. Quickish, but certainly fair.
- In order of preference...Blue, Black and then Red. Blue and Black are neck and neck. Nothing wrong with Red, the other two just fit my eye better.
- Restaurants at the clubhouses as well as P2O5 were solid. We didn’t try the more upscale options.
- Rooms at the lodge are first rate
- Shuttle service from the lodge to the clubhouses was quick and easy
The negative
- Walking the courses with pull carts, quite frankly, is a challenge. There are long walks from green to tee, plenty of elevation change, very little signage indicating where tee boxes might be and you’re walking in shifting sand at times. All while trying to keep up with groups who chose to drive carts and marshals gently urging you to go faster. At this price, I don’t want to be rushed and I felt rushed. It took us five hours to play the Blue and I simply couldn’t do it any faster on foot. We weren’t waiting to play until our approach on 18. The group behind waited briefly, occasionally.
- Botton line, have a caddy carry your bag or take a cart
Fantastic Layout, quirky greens
The new course is an excellent addition. Many of the greens are a little "putt putt" style with too much undulation. But overall, the layout, scenery, practice facility, and staff are fantastic.
Most forgiving course at Streamsong
I found Streamsong Black to be a wonderful golf course. It was different enough from the other courses to be memorable. It was very forgiving off the tee. The course defends itself with very undulating greens. They are easy to hit, but 3 putts await if you are out of position. I also played the 7 hole par 3 course which was quite enjoyable.
Streamsong is highly recommended
We took a guys golf trip to Streamsong and played all three courses. This is a golf destination...and a great one at that! These courses provide a great variety of layouts with outstanding views and a challenge of your skills. I highly recommend a trip to this beautiful resort.
Unbelievable Experience
Just returned from a trip to Streamsong and played all the courses. We play red first. Staff and caddy were great. Course is unlike anything I ever played. Challenging but very fair. Pace of play was bit slow but not horrible. Caddie tried to talk us into the shorter tees, but once we all hit it about 270 plus from the black tees, he didn't say another word about tee boxes. Greens were fast. Coming from Michigan and not ever playing bermuda fairways, chipping and pitching took time to get used to. Overall, a great experience at Streamsong. But be prepared to do a lot of walking and be prepared for some hot temperatures, depending on when you play.
Beautiful!
I believe the greatest thing man can do to add beauty to God's creation is build a golf course. The Blue at Streamsong lives up to the challenge of that conviction. Tom Doak built a golf course that may not quite have the shot values of the Red or Black, but it gives you views that will take your breath away. For me, that makes a course worth playing. Don't get me wrong. The Blue is an outstanding course and will offer you an unbelievable experience. I think the 18th hole is one of the best on the property. I say "think," because we played it in the dark! Had to finish.
Hardest of the 3
I love the Red, and for me, it's the hardest of the 3 Streamsong courses. It's flatter than the Blue and the Black, and that includes the greeens. Crenshaw/Coore were dastardly in their design, however. While the other 2 have fairways that almost allow you to hit your tee shot anywhere, they placed fairway bunkers that force you to hit it on one side or the other. If you don't, you will probably end up in a bunker. Pick the wrong route and the hole plays harder than if you pick the correct one.
Largest Greens Ever!
We played all 3 Streamsong courses. Every one had something to recommend it as the best one on the property. The Black is designed so that you can get some whacky bounces, and the greens are are humongous. I've never seen sprinkler heads on a putting surface, but every green has them. This was a great experience. My only disappointment was the condition of the greens. They just weren't up to the quality of the Red or Blue. They were a little shaggy and the grain seemed to be more impactful.
Wow!!
What a feast for the senses... all I can say. This is a true resort course with the player in mind. The layout, staff, conditions, all exceeded expectations. Shout out to Brian my caddie as he was invaluable in course knowledge and friendly banter throughout my round, my score would have easily been 10 strokes higher without him.
"Hey, Lama..."
Got a couple friends together to bite the bullet and play Streamsong Red on my birthday. Overall great!
We got there early to take in some of the amenities, but that was a mistake- if you're only going to play the course there's no reason to go any earlier than you would to your local spot. Pro shop, bar and restaurant, driving range, putting green. That's all there is.
The property is very unique. High dunes, high grass, lakes and wildlife. Very cool, especially if you like taking pictures.
Staff, at first, was very friendly- Carmen the starter was super cool and even made sure to run back to the clubhouse and get me a Happy Birthday coin.
Our forecaddie had great course knowledge, accurate yardage, and changed our minds on a few putts with the correct line. He gave me a tip on the Par 4 3rd hole and I holed out for my first Eagle on a par 4. -he knew his stuff.
Only problem I had was that he never asked if we wanted to pull the pin, he left us stranded a time or two 50yds away from the cart, and once or twice he'd walk out leaving us to rake a bunker. It was super hot out, so none of this was a huge deal until we got to the cart return.
Tipping the caddie is at the discretion of the players, and all over the place they suggest $100 tip for a 4some. We pulled cash together and on 18 we gave him $135. When we got in, he jumped off the cart and sat there watching us unload our gear and clean out our stuff. He didn't help. He didn't clean our clubs. But he did have the nerve to walk up to the other cart and ask the other guys "was the tip given for everyone?" suggesting that we stiffed him.
Maybe I'm wrong, but $135 was well over 20% of our round, and 35% more than suggested- plenty sufficient I think.
Overall the course is great and it is worth experiencing once. I think this course would be fairly priced at $80-$90 for Floridians (before the mandatory caddie fee) - All in all we payed $170 each, which according to our caddie must have been a good deal.
