Mountain Creek Resort
About Mountain Creek Resort
Mountain Creek Resort is a four-season destination in Vernon, N.J., just an hour outside of New York City. It features a waterpark; the 27-hole Great Gorge course, which was purchased in 2018; the Treescape Aerial Adventure Park, home to zip-lining, climbing obstacles and rope walks; and a Bike Park of 52 trails that is loaded with jumps and 1,000 feet of vertical drop. The course was part of the old Playboy Club in the 1970s and 1980s, attracting famous names such as Dean Martin and Bob Hope for a game. It’s a beautiful property with wonderful mountain views and elevation changes. Guests can stay in the Appalachian hotel or enjoy more space and privacy in a one- to three-bedroom townhome rental at Black Creek Sanctuary. Both accommodations offer outdoor pool and hot tub facilities.Facts

Great public option
Overall, Great Gorge is a great public option with great views of the nearby mountains. No matter which nine you play, it will be a tough test. The greens can get firm and fast, but they roll pretty true. Players can do a better job fixing ball marks. There are a few low areas that get soggy, particularly in the middle of the Lake nine, and on 8 at the Quarry. Other than that, course conditions are decent. A little tough to justify the price point at north of $90, but understandable given the more expensive options at the nearby Crystal Springs courses. At $70-75, Great Gorge would be incredible value, and I heard weekday rates can get below that, so that's something to consider.
Gorge
We played Rail to Quarry front and back nines. The fairways are like carpet. They play fantastic. The Redan shaped greens are firm and fast and vicious if u misplay a shot. The course layout has been a favorite for years. The rock formations and the way the course architect forces shots using those rocks is fun, challenging and rewarding when accomplished. Great weather and the place was quiet. We played in 3 hours at 1:10pm and the rate was more than half that of comparable courses in Sussex.

Please hire a ranger
The course has a few rough holes - mainly on Quarry nine, but overall nice course and well kept. Cart staff seemed frenzied and disorganized. The new restaurant and bar, Jed’s Hut, is a tremendous improvement versus last year. HOWEVER - the pace of play is absolutely brutal. If you enjoy 6 hour plus rounds this is the place for you. Groups were backed up and no one there to speed things up. That’s been my gripe with Great Gorge my past few rounds. After this round i will not be returning. One of the cheaper options in the area but I’d rather pay more to be off course in 4 1/2 hours.
