Manor House at Tanglewood Park
About Manor House at Tanglewood Park
The Manor House Bed and Breakfast isn't your typical golf hotel or resort, but its location inside the 1,100-acre Tanglewood Park does have its advantages. It's within a mile of Tanglewood Park's 45 holes of golf, including the Championship Course, host of the 1974 PGA Championship won by Lee Trevino. The Victorian era manor dating to 1859 has been completely restored. All the rooms include their own private baths and period furniture and decor. Golfers can also stay at the cottage, guesthouse and apartment. Park amenities feature an aquatic center, horse stables, tennis courts and more.Facts

Conditions are starting to slip up
1st time playing this course. Layout is excellent and very challenging. However, of the 90+ bunkers on the champions course, only about 15 of them had enough sand in them. attempting to play in most of the bunkers usually results in digging into some dirt or red mud. It also looked as if some of the bunkers had playground sand poured in them along with all of the rocks and pebbles on the playground. Greens are great and the fairways are in good condition as well. Will consider playing this course again in the fall but for the resources available to tanglewood park, the conditions are subpar and can't compete with the other nice public courses like forest oaks country club.
Optional
Slow greens and rough tees but a fun game with the elevation changes and herds of deer cheering you on from a beautiful landscape.
Great course for the price
Course in fairly good condition despite the area suffering from an acute case of Winter Rot.
Management has done a great job of sodding some fairways and working aggressively to bring the course up to speed.
Greens aerator several weeks ago.
The greens on this course were recently punched and putting was difficult to control with such bouncy rolls!
Ranger
Had a good time. very slow the course need ranger to keep up with slow play.
Mediocre
I came to Tanglewood with high expectations, but I am now extremely disappointed. I drove from just over 2 hours away to play a PGA caliber course but the condition of the course was absolutely horrible. Dead fairways and dead rough ran throughout the entirety of the course, maybe this was due to lack of rain. I would not recommend this course to anyone looking for a plush, better than average course. The only positive was the course layout, everything else was awful. You can spend the same amount of money and play a much nicer course in the Winston-Salem/ Greensboro area.
A challenging but fun and worthwhile course
I got a 3:16 tee time, and teed off shortly after that. I played in a threesome, from the blue tees. The clubhouse staff didn't know who I was supposed to be paired up with, so I just picked a couple of other people and played with them. Pace of play was very good in the first 9, but in the second 9 a slow foursome got in front of us somehow and made play seem excruciatingly slow (we waited every single hole). The whole round took 5 hours... the front 9 was 2hrs10mins, and the second 9 was 2 hrs40mins. The course was in good shape, though the greens were still recovering from aeration which made putting unpredictable. The course is pretty long, though there are only 2 par 5's and it plays to a par 70 instead of 72.
The main thing I would note about the course is this: there are a lot of sandtraps! There are plenty of fairway traps and every green is heavily guarded by sand. It's a Bobby Jones course, and I've heard that he imagined the green as a castle that was guarded and you had to really attack it... You WILL be in the sand at some point (if not many) during the day.
Also, the greens are large with quite a bit of undulation and movement to them. I really liked the greens, except that they were still recovering from aeration. I look forward to playing it again when I get the chance. I shot 42 front, 42 on the back, my first time there. I'll do better next time. The 18th hole is amazing... just wait til you see the green... awe & fear inspiring! Can't wait to take my Dad to play there when he comes to visit next.
One extra note: take $2 cash, because the course is inside some kind of state park, and you have to pay a $2 entry fee. It's a big park with LOTS to do... (pool, volleyball, horseback riding, more).
TANGLEWOOD SURVIVES THE WINTER
I have played numerous courses in the Triad this Spring and only a handful have any fairways to speak of. Tanglewood, Forest Oaks, and Gillespie managed to save their bermuda fairways through either rye seeding in the winter or in Gillespie's case, not spraying their weeds (which was a stroke of genius). At least 3 other courses have lost about 35% of their fairways.
Over priced
Decent course to play on but with the fairway and green conditions it was over priced. Lots of sand traps but were not well maintained.
Tanglewood Champions Course
fairways and sand traps in horrible condition. Course was recently aerated so greens were expected to not be in top condition. Traps full of rocks and sand had more clay than sand. Fairways very much dead grass and deadpan and many spots under repair. Staff did not seem to be customer friendly and food was mediocre at best.
Championship Course?!? Maybe for billy goats!
Appeared to have been a decent course 30-40 years ago maybe but it was obvious that for whatever reasons, it has been neglected and abused for many years. Bunkers everywhere but all needed sand. Some sand was red brick sand, some was white, and some grey. Wasted drive, time and money.
Searching for fairway grass.....
As with many of the local Triad courses, Bermuda grass has yet to start filling in the fairways. Combined with a lack of rain and sparse grass, play is rather difficult. The greens however were in nice shape. The bunkers were primarily dirt (packed).
No sand in greenside bunkers
Great layout, fairways are probably the best in the Triad considering the harsh winter. Very challenging course with extreme number of bunkers. Every green is surrounded by deep bunkers. Bump and run to green is impossible here. If you are unfortunate enough to play from a greenside bunker (virtually no sand in the bunkers) you might as well leave your sand wedge in your bag. What sand there is appears to be construction red clay sand with numerous pebbles and is extremely hard-packed. All you can do is chip out of the bunkers. Hopefully they will invest in quality sand!!!

Reynolds course in decent shape. Greens are great-fast and true. Fairways on some holes spotty, 14 nearly dead. Overall good value and would definitely recommend it right now. Just do yourself a favor and call prior to booking a time via GolfNow to make sure there isn't a tournament going on. They tend to take up both courses and take all day.
Slow golf on a Sunday afternoon
I was the first time out at Tanglewood and I didn't know that you first have to pay a parking fee before entering the park property. But it was worth the $2 extra.
The starter was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the course. He let me play as a single and gave me good advice. The layout and landscape is really very nice. There are only 2 things to complain about. Fivesomes including young kids were allowed to play the Championship Course on a Sunday afternoon. Play was extremely slow! Secondly, the plenty of bunkers and traps would need some new sand. It was hard to play out of the traps.
Despite these two issues I enjoyed it. Overall a great golf course.
Great layout
You can see that this course was a top course in the 80s. Very challenging around the greens with some great holes. A must try for all golfers. Greens were in great nick.
Great Course to play!
The championship course is an excellent layout, and was in pretty good shape for the lack of rain they have gotten recently. Pace of play was good even as a single at 10am. The course is pretty challenging with lots of bunkers and fast greens. Be sure to keep it in play here, or you will certainly pay the price. Great value!
Best value in the Triad
First time playing this course inside Tanglewood Park. Directions on GolfNow are wrong, so be sure to know before you go that the course is physically inside the park and requires a separate $2 admission but it's worth it.
Plenty of hills on this course so get the cart - especially since numer 10 is nearly a mile from the clubhouse turn. Also a fun course that will test your ball flight shaping with fades and draws. I will be back because if that!
Some repairs being made but the GREENS are exceptionally maintained. Staff was friendly, but could have spent a little more time explaining the layout once I told them it was my first time. A regular stepped up and helped explain how to get to 10.
Sunday afternoon round
Pace of play was slow because there was no starter or ranger and a five some was slowing the whole course down. Many calls were made to pro shop, and they finally sent the cart guy out to find out what was slowing things down but that was about three hours too late. Poor course management by the pro shop.
Course was in fair condition, greens slow but consistent.
slow play
Very slow no rangers on course, pro shop let 5 some play on Sunday
