The Country Club of Whispering Pines
About The Country Club of Whispering Pines
The Country Club of Whispering Pines falls under the radar of most golfers traveling to Pinehurst. Its 36 holes by Ellis Maples are just minutes from the village. The longer Pines Course is an "inland links", while the River Course requires more accuracy. Guests can stay in condo suites or in a standard hotel-style room with access to a fitness center, tennis courts, outdoor pool and clubhouse with a restaurant and meeting facilities.Facts

Great value & Course
Shorter than the pines course but was in great shape and the greens rolled true
Very Good !
Great Course, very good Staff. my only Con is the layout... at the turn around wanted to get something to eat but it takes you a long time to get back to the Clubhouse from the 9/10. but overall a great experience.
One of MAPLES best!
Course was in great shape, recovering better than most from our brutal winter. Classic design course and one of Maples best in the area. Huge well maintained greens that were rolling true and quick. Nice firm sand in the bunkers. Can not wait to get back and play again.
Long slog...
This course is actually a pretty nice track, but only go if you have an entire day to waste. we had to wait 10 mins on every shot starting on the 2nd hole...no marshall to keep things moving. there are tons of nicer courses which are much better run in the area - dont wast your time on this one.
whispering pines river
Excellent course...another good Ellis Maples design. .not overly long but requires you to work ball both ways.....highly recommended and will come back for future visits.
Better than expected
Usually wet this time of year but not so on this trip. Pollen is high so be prepared. Watch the wind as it played two club lengths longer. Greens in good condition and rolling true. Be careful on the downhill putts - as they are quick. Great time!
Great place
It was great my brother and I played in 3 hours got in front of everyone it was a dream round if u play the pines course on the downhill par five aim further left than u think.
Nice track
First time here on 3/15/2015. Got a great deal at $40. Driving range was closed due to rain the previous 2 days. The pines course has quite the length to it. The traps are we'll maintained and the greens putt true.
Worth the trip
The course presents a reasonable challenge and is well maintained. This is the first course I've played in this area that has maintained the traps properly. There are many traps, I might add. The fairways had been overseeded and the greens roll true. I would definitely play it again.
Great Day for Golf
I enjoyed our round of golf on the River Course. The price we got through Golfnow.com was excellent! The course was a little wet and several fairways were marked cart path only. However, that didn't detract from the nice course and beautiful day. Second time I have golfed the course and next time will try the other 18. Very pleased with the day of golf.
Pines Course
Pines course in good condition and dry which was surprising considering all the rain in the area. Fairways were great and no tight lies due to the lush rye grass. My problem is the course layout, there is no access to the clubhouse after finishing hole 9. My partner needed a beverage and snack so we were guided back to the clubhouse by some lady members. Needless to say what a trip through the woods and down a 2 lane road good thing our cart had a good battery. When we finally reached the club house no food and very limited snack selection. This round trip took around 45 minutes. If you play this course bring your own beverage and food!
Okay course
Played here last year was kind of disappointed with the course conditions. Greens were pretty rough fairways were decent. Little expensive for conditions.
A hidden jewel in the Sandhills crown
I've played this course 60 times over the years. While not as visually exciting as the Pinehurst resort courses, (or Pine Needles), it is just a great design that is imminently playable and fun. #5 on the Pines course is the best par 5 in the Sandhills as far as I'm concerned. Paula, in the pro shop is terrific. It is always affordable and always in good shape. I love playing both of these courses and recommend them both very highly to anyone in the area.
Ellis Maples Hates Me!!!
What a beautiful day!! What a wonderful golf course!!! All I needed was 15 feet and I would have broken 80!!! Without those 15 feet I shot 89 and it was Ellis Maples fault!!! 1 foot there, 2 feet here, 6 inches over there and it would have been easy. But without those feet and inches I was yards away from glory. Fabulous green complexes, and perfectly placed bunkers ,makes this an extremely complex golf course, which demands that you play this course more than once, if you really want to get to know it. Thank God I'm playing it tomorrow and I will definitely show Mr. Maples a thing or two!!!
A Walkable Links Course
The seventy minutes it takes to drive from my home to the Country Club of Whispering Pines is a journey I look forward to making as often as I possibly can. There are two course from which to choose, both are links style, both are walkable and both are in the best of shape from Tee through Green.
This day I played for the first time the Pines Course, previously named the East Course. Although booked as a single I was fortunate to have paired with a couple of local guys Charles and Roger, who showed me around the eighteen (when you play 18 you have to play 9, just saying) in just under four hours. A bit of apprehension sat in as we stood on the first tee box and watched the last group of the Ladies' Day tournament play the first hole, however, by the time we reached the third tee we saw only dust as those girls were not messing about, we saw them once again as we played the tenth and they were hitting approach shots to eleven green; never saw them after that glimpse. We were never pressured from behind until sixteen green when a twosome caught us as I made double bogey on the easiest hole on the course, e gads.
This is a club to which I would consider membership if I lived closer. The staff are always at their best, smiling and offering help and never to busy to work with a visitor or a member. Dave and Paula in the pro shop greet you as a friend and Mr. Willie the cart guy will crack you up with a joke.
The practice areas are, as you might imagine, well used as there seems to be a few people using the facilities all the time. The driving range was in need of 'haircut' the day I was there but the maintenance crews were busy on other parts of the two courses.
The fairways are just that fair, hit it and you have a fine lie on some nice turf; miss the fairway and you can find yourself in the sand, love grass and pine straw just like Pinehurst Number Two since the restoration by Coore and Crenshaw. The bunkers are not so many but well place and well kept by the members; it is as though they take time to properly repair the bunker after playing out, a concept you will not find at most public courses.
The greens on this day were running about ten on the Stimpmeter and since Ellis Maples studied with Donald Ross they are small and undulating. (I had five one putts and two three putts) If the members have the staff speed the greens a bit you would see handicaps increasing.
When you visit the Sandhills area of North Carolina take time to savor a fine couple of courses from the 1950s in the Country Club of Whispering Pines. Perhaps I will see you there and we can have a pint in the grill after our round.
Nice course
Course was in great shape. It is narrow in some places. I will definitely play there again.

"GO PLAY!"
What a course
This was my 2nd 18 for the day. It was a challenge to play as a single but enjoyable. Water on most of the holes that made every shot perfect. Great scenic view of the river and large houses that lined the river. Everbody needs to play both course.
Great Sandhills Value
Played the River Course on the way over to play Pinehurst #1. Great warmup for the fancy course. Course was in great shape, quick greens, great clubhouse/proshop, and tasty lunch buffet at the turn. If you are in the area and want a nice course without the sticker shop, Whispering Pines is the place to go.
challenging you short game
This course is great on helping you on course mangagement. The constant change in direction and elevation. You have to place your shot.
