Bandon Dunes
About Bandon Dunes
Located on the southwestern coast of Oregon, Bandon Dunes Resort is one of the country's largest and most popular golf resorts. It is home to pure links golf on bluffs along the Pacific Ocean. The first course opened in 1999, Bandon Dunes, and was soon joined by Pacific Dunes, a Tom Doak design, which vaulted to as high as the best public course in the U.S. according to some national panels. Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw added Bandon Trails, which is a little further inland in forest. Old MacDonald was added fourth, followed by a par-3 course, Bandon Preserve. In 2020, Bandon Dunes reopened the Sheep Ranch, which was formerly an off-property private course. Coore & Crenshaw turned it into a bunker-less 18-hole course. There are a wide variety of lodging accommodations that will satisfy any group at Bandon Dunes, starting with rooms and suites in the lodge and inn, to larger home and multi-bedroom units. One of the great perks of a Bandon Dunes visit is the 24-hour courtesy shuttle that transfers golfers from their accommodations to golf courses, dining and off-course amenities. While there is not a full-service spa, there is a massage center, as well as fitness center, hot tub and sauna. The golf courses at Bandon Dunes are all walking only and caddies are available.Facts

Sensational
Stunning course! Visual stimulating as you go from the ocean to forest inland. So many good holes on this course you can't keep track. I am partial to the middle of the round w/ massive bunkers waiting to gobble a mis hit to the green.
Something for everyone on this course. Wind kicked up on back 9. Part of the Bandon experience to play #16 to the teeth of the wind w/ 30mph gusts. I asked the caddie if it was playing 700 yards. He just nodded, giving the impression to just hit the best shot I could as many times needed to reach the green.
Best putting course in America
The Punchbowl is a must do at Bandon. The green is so big that their is 2 18 hole courses and you don't cross or get in other peoples way. No tee times, its free, and their is a adult bev truck right next to the green.
This is a super fun way to relax kick back and have some fun at Bandon.
Only thing I wouldve like was a scorecard...but I may have missed it.
Shorty's great way to ease into Bandon
Talk about a great business model. Have a 9 hole par 3 course that is free for people to enjoy as they get to Bandon.
A must if you arrive a day early to Bandon. Hit the range and putting green to get acclimated to Oregon, then go play this great little short course without out a hole over 145. Helps you really get the feel for the different types of shots you need at Bandon.
The greens are crazy exactly the same as the other courses with crazy humps and bumps.
Unlike anything else you will play in US
For this course to not be rated 5 stars across the board is just ignorance. What it lacks in oceanside holes it more than makes up for with some of the best holes on property. I rate Old Mac 3rd of the courses on Property and it's a razor thin margin between 3rd and first. This course has some of the most interesting and strategic holes you will ever play anywhere. My favorites are the 16th the Alps hole, the 4th Hogs back a brutal par 4 but very cool driving strategy, the wildest green on property the Short #5. Definitely a course you will want to play more than once in order to figure it out but if have an open mind it is crazy fun. Even though the terrain is completely different it reminds me a little bit of Tobacco Road with the big crazy greens and some of the elevation changes. Old Mac gets overlooked due to not having the ocean views of PD, BD or SR but don't sleep on it. It may be the most fun to play of all of them.
Part of the Bandon Experience
Punchbowl is a can't miss. Right next to the Pacific Dunes clubhouse this may be the best putting course in the world. Grab a beer and some friends and enjoy some of the wackiest putts you can find. I know they put flags out to identify the actual "course(s), " but I liked picking my own holes. You can get some serious putts with great breaks and elevation changes. Have Fun!
World Class Routing
From start to finish Bandon Dunes offers one of the best golf experiences anyone could ask for. Among the 5 routings at the resort, its namesake is my favorite. A round at Bandon Dunes is really a special experience, working around and through coastal dunes, the scenery is spectacular everywhere you look.
It doesn’t take long to play right down to the ocean at Bandon Dunes as the 4th green sits right near the beach. Unlike Pacific Dunes which has its coastal holes elevated up on the cliffs, Bandon Dunes has several holes much closer to the water. Holes 5 and 12 also get nice and close to the coast.
This course has so many great holes with different looks off the tee. The par 3s are all great with varying lengths and are all facing different directions so you will deal with a different wind direction on each. The long 12th is particularly difficult when playing into the wind like we played it. Fairways on most of the driver holes have fairways that are plenty wide, but you will have to work your way around some very penal and well placed bunkers.
The closing stretch of this course is spectacular as the routing works its way inland back out to the coastal cliffs with a crescendo at the spectacular 16th. This par 4 has to be one of the best holes in the world both visually and strategically. The tee shot is a real thinker with the ocean and tons of bunkers on the right, but an easy second if the tee ball is placed correctly. Bail out to the left and deal with a possibly blind second into the green.
While all 5 courses at at the resort are great, this course, for me, stood out above the rest. I feel that Bandon Dunes encompasses all the best parts of the others and offers an experience like few courses around the world can offer. This should be on every golfer’s list of courses to play!

A World Apart
A round at Bandon Trails is a world apart from the other courses at Bandon Dunes. Set a little further inland than the other 4 courses, the Trails works its way through the forest. Most of the holes are framed by trees instead of tall fescue and gorse. While this course lacks ocean views, it offers plenty of spectacular scenery.
Bandon Trails is a big golf course with wide fairways and expansive bunkers. With the surrounding forest, the wind is a bit more subdued on this golf course. I really felt like I could let loose on several strokes instead of trying to work the ball low and shape the shot through the wind. I really enjoyed playing this golf course.
The long uphill climb (in a truck) to the 14th is so rewarding as you reach the tallest point on the property with a incredible view. From the top you will hit a spectacular tee shot down the short par 4 before facing a tricky shot up to a very difficult green. Bandon Trails offers plenty of tough holes like the long 11th, and a few fairly easy ones like the drivable 8th, making the whole round lots of fun.
A round on the Trails is not to be missed on your trip to Bandon Dunes, it will give you another chance to play an amazing course with a totally different style than the other 4 on property.
Like Nothing Else
Old Macdonald is a treat, like no other course I have played, and I want to return. After opening with a straightforward par 4 and a tricky par 3, Old Mac opens the gates to a golf valley of wonder beyond the Ghost Tree. Your tee shot on the signature third hole will probably be fine as long as you keep it right of the gigantic dead tree on top of the hill. This is the only aiming point as the tee shot is totally blind. After making your way up the large hill to find your ball in the largest fairway ever, you will experience a test of links golf like none other in the USA.
Holes 3-15 are routed in an expansive valley with lots of challenging holes, harrowing bunkers, elevation changes, and some treacherous par 3s. You will also have to deal with a strong sustained wind throughout the round as the Pacific Ocean is just a few hundred yards away, have fun out there.
A day at Old Mac requires a good ground game as you will probably want to keep the ball low. There is a lot of trimmed grass out there, so fairways can be easy to find, but look out for the bunkers. They are deep and have tall faces, so you will probably end up just bailing out if you find yourself in the fairway variety of sand. Conditions are fast and firm. The par 3 8th has what appears to be two entirely different greens with a huge trench dividing them, although it is all one surface, and your tee shot on the Redan 12th better be pure or you will not hold the green, ending up at the bottom of the plateau. (I had 3 chips to make it up)
With all of its difficulty, there are some scoring chances on this track with a couple of drivable par 4s, and the par 5s are definitely gettable. I found every hole on this course to be interesting and offering a different test to the golfer. It was a blast to be out on the course, I just wish I played it twice and changed my strategy on several of the holes.
The greens at Old Mac are huge, the fairways expansive, and the scoring chances are there! I loved the final 3 holes with a blind second on 16, a great par 5 17th, and 18, a par 4 with a hill blocking the green, is my favorite closing hole out of the 5 courses at Bandon Dunes. I could not ask more out of this course as the day at Old Macdonald was spectacular, just wish I could have put the ball in the right spots more often.
Rugged and Beautiful
Pacific Dunes was a great introduction for our group on our first day at Bandon Dunes. This course has a bit of a rugged feel as it meanders through rolling hills covered in native grasses native grasses with fairways cut in between. As the name suggests, the Pacific is never that far away and there are many holes with views of the ocean. We felt the strong breeze coming off of the ocean all day long and could constantly hear the crash of the waves down below.
Most of the course plays right in front of the golfer as there are not too many surprises. What you see is what you get. You will definitely be managing your shots with a steady wind throughout the day, and you will get a chance to play with the wind as much as you are playing against it. The only funky hole is the Par 4 9th, this hole actually has 2 greens, depending on the day the flag may be placed at either location. We played the hole to the upper green, you’ll want to keep your ball up the right side of the fairway to have a good look. Go left and you’ll face a long blind uphill second.
Pacific Dunes has a few unique features like back to back par 3s. (10 and 11) The 10th plays right into the ocean, and 11 is slightly uphill as you tee off right on the ridge above the beach below. Both holes offer spectacular views! The bunkering at the course is prevalent and many of the bunkers look like they belong there as opposed to being dug out to fit the course. I love the natural look of the bunkering and the course in general. The holes look as if the belong on that terrain.
My favorite hole was the par 4 13th right along the ocean to the left. I hit a natural cut, so I took my tee shot right out towards the ocean and watched it sail back into the fairway as the wind assisted. The second shot gets a little tricky as the fairway narrows to a long green with a huge waste bunker on the right and the ocean to your left. Lots of fun, and no shortage of drama.
The fairways out at Pacific dunes are pretty wide, so you can expect to find a lot of them, and even if you stray off the path a bit you can usually find your ball in the wispy fescue. Conditions out on the course were great like all of the other resort courses. The Punchbowl, the great putting course at Bandon Dunes is located right next to the PAC clubhouse, so you will want to stay after your round and enjoy some of the funnest putts of your life!
Your trip to Bandon would not be complete without a round played at Pacific Dunes.

Stunning Scenery
All of the courses at Bandon Dunes have something memorable to offer, and Sheep Ranch certainly takes the cake when it comes to remarkable ocean views. Being quite a bit further north than the other four Bandon Dunes courses, (10 minutes or so drive) Sheep Ranch has the feeling of being in a totally different world away from the resort.
Sheep Ranch is the only Bandon Dunes course with its own driving range which is a nice touch. The clubhouse is well equipped like all other Bandon Dunes courses and the snack bar has a Hot Pastrami Hoagie that is a great pre-round meal!
Out on the course you can expect a heavy dose of wind. We dealt with a continuous 20+ MPH wind out of the south throughout the round which never seemed to let up. Thankfully there are plenty of amazing ocean views to take your mind off of the beating that you will be taking for the next several hours.
Most of the holes on Sheep Ranch are totally exposed to the elements so you can expect the conditions of the course to be firm. The greens are cut longer than most of the other courses at Bandon Dunes, so you can actually get a ball to hold the green if you hit a good shot. The fairways are wide and most of the greens are pretty big, so you should find yourself in friendly spots for most of the round, just make sure your ground game is up to par or you could be in for a long day! It's still a Bandon Dunes experience.
We had no caddies in our group, but found that getting around the course is pretty easy. Most of the holes are right in front of you with the exception of #8 (aim between the trees) and #14 (right over the big hump). Thankfully the course marshals set up strategically on those holes to add some insight to our tee shots!
My biggest takeaway from the course was the scenery. You will have breathtaking views on so many points of the property. Holes #6, #9, and #16 were really remarkable, but the rest of the track did not have many great golf holes in my opinion.
If I could only play 4 of the Bandon Dunes courses, then I would probably leave Sheep Ranch out of rotation, but I would say that it is worth seeing if you can fit it in, especially if you can get lucky and find a calm day.

WOW
Easily the most fun I have ever had on a golf course! Course in fantastic shape, and views are stunning.
Routing so cool. You follow the criss-cross patterns of paths hole to hole, ending on one of the many tee boxes they choose. The fun was not knowing what the next hole had in store.
So many kicks and bowls on and around the green. Don't think this is an easy course... crazy pin placement led to 3 and even 4 putts in our group.
Only problem is it was over after 13. I could play here all day!
Keiser/Kidd masterpiece
When they set out back in 1999 to build a course on the OR coast, they new it had to be special and it is!!
The journey of BD and how it has turned in to a world class resort is amazing. Holes 4, 5, and 6 are what Bandon is all about, but I also like 7 w/ hints of a Machrihanish green and 8 w/ the he** bunkers.
16 is on a level of its own, and a BD signature. This course set the golf world on fire. Hats off to DMK for figthing hard to make this course what it is. Read Dream Golf and you will understand.
Special
They did it again!! The 5th 18 hole course at Bandon is just the perfect addition to the already world class courses.
Such a cool vibe when you pull up to the clubhouse. Laid back, top notch service, and just enough of a tease of the course/ocean before you hit you opening tee shot.
Wide fairways help ease you in to the round. The par 3's are awesome, and holes along the ocean even better than the pictures. Green complex on shared 3rd/16th is like no other, have to see it to believe.
Playing the 18th hole as the sun set, WOW!
Old Mac
This was the last round on my Bandon trip and I was pleasantly impressed with Old Mac. The course is very forgiving off the tee but that may be on only forgiving this about the course. The greens are very hilly and cause lots of 3 puts. We had great weather but I couldn't imagine playing these tough greens in worse conditions!
Best Par 3 Course Ever
I have played many par 3 courses around the world and this is by FAR the BEST! This was an excellent course to play with your buddies after a full round of 18 holes. We all day beverages and walked the course with ease. The unique par 3's made this so much fun we wanted to play every day. You must play this on your next Bandon trip!
Excellent Course!
I absolutely loved this golf course. Even though there are no views of the ocean I think this was one of my personal favorites. The course layout was unreal and everyone who played in my group loved it. I personally loved the walk on the trails in between holes. Truly walking on a trail through the forest which is amazing. Must play on your Bandon Trip!!
Fun layout
This course was another beauty at Bandon Dunes. The layout is interesting yet very fun and challenging. The day we played it poured rain all day and yet the greens did an unbelievable job of absorbing the water. I would highly recommend making a day out of this and playing the punchbowl before and after the round!
The Bandon GOAT
This in my opinion is the best course at Bandon Dunes. The original has everything you wish for with great links golf. Great views of the area. Fun and fair greens. Unbelievable conditions and hole after hole you are just amazed by the course beauty. Must play on your trip to Bandon!
AMAZING!
First trip to Bandon Dunes and started off the trip playing Sheep Ranch. Oh boy what a treat! I think Sheep Ranch is a great course to start the Bandon trip with because it is very forgiving off the tee. The views of the ocean are absolutely unreal! I highly recommend checking this out and playing it first or last on your next Bandon trip!
Everything it's cracked up to be... of gorse
I had one day (and two rounds) to play at Bandon... which left me with the unenviable task of figuring out which courses to play and which to pass on. Pacific Dunes (and Sheep Ranch) were the ultimate choices... and I couldn't be happier with the decision to play PD.
Before I begin with the course, let me first talk about amenities and service. Every interaction I had at Bandon was sensational, the service was simply amazing. Additionally, the Punch Bowl putting course is situated right at the first hole of Pacific Dunes, you should absolutely plan to show up early and partake for two reasons... 1. it's fun! and 2. well... lets start the course review there
[2]the Greens at PD (also at Sheep ranch, so I assume everywhere at Bandon) are no joke. They are fast, firm and contain character, and it is a huge advantage to putt around at the Punch Bowl for a bit and get used to them before you go out in the course. It's very easy to give up several strokes adjusting to the greens. Having said that... they were in terrific shape when I played and rolled consistently and fairly all the way around the course.
The sand play, by and large, is good; however there are some spots - particularly in the fairways - where you can get into some rather significant trouble (no way to play out and you are forced to waste a shot just getting out)... I managed to do this to myself once and my playing partner did as well.
The fairways were terrific as well and the native areas, while feeling outright dangerous at times (gorse can be quite prickly) were reasonable... you really have to blow a shot most places to be heavily penalized. Of note though, PD has several sets of tees ranging from ~3900 to ~6700 and there are a lot more ways to get in trouble from the back than the front... choose your tees wisely, especially i the wind is whipping around.
I'd also recommend at least one caddie in the group, they're on course knowledge can absolutely save you strokes and heartache (and did for our group more than once), given what you are spending for your golf etc. it's a great insurance policy toward an enjoyable round of golf.
My favorite hole was probably the par 3 eleventh, running along the ocean and playing over a small canyon the view is breathtaking (pro-tip: avoid the bunker and you'll probably score better than I did). However, there are so many fantastic holes it's not difficult to see why this course is ranked in the top 10 of almost every national ranking.
I also loved the design/layout of the meandering course where you'll find #2 and #16 running parallel and #4 surrounded by #11, #12, and #13.
Bandon isn't free... although it does get cheaper is you play a couple rounds in a day... the "re-round" discount applies even if you play a different course on property as I did... but it is worth every penny for the experience. Next time I'm planning on getting in the Old Mac and Bandon Dunes courses (at least)... and then I'll be back again... it's certainly the kind of place your go back to as often as you can afford it. If you're into golf, and golf experiences, I can't recommend Bandon (and Pacific Dunes in particular) strongly enough.
