Love the Resort Course!
The Resort course this past Saturday was my 2nd time playing it and it was fantastic again! The greens were a very good speed, probably running somewhere around 10-11, which is great in south Texas in the summer. Too many courses leave their greens far too long to protect against burnout. The pin placements were a bit suspect but overall it was a great day at La Cantera!
Enjoyable, challenging course layout
We simply had a great round. Not so much score wise, but the overall professionalism from the bag drop greeter to the the fairway maintanence employee (who actually applauded my playing partner on a particularially difficult shot), each person we met was very respectful of our time and either shut down a lawn mower or stopped their cart when we attempted a shot. I personally have played some higher end courses whose employees seemed to care more about getting through the rough with their mower than the patron who is actually there trying to enjoy their round. Thanks ever so much for the enjoyable time.
Amazing course
Course was worth every penny! Plaenty of challenging holes that required some thought to your shots.
Will definitely come back to play again!
Thanks!
great time at a hot wide open course
We had a great time. Staff was very helpful and we are planning another trip to SA.
Hole 19th
Closed for renovations, no one said anything until we finished the round
Hot day at the Resort Course...
I've played the Resort Course countless times as a SA resident but figured its time for a 2018 mid-season review. With the course shut down nearly all fall of 2017 and parts of this year I have been expecting at some point for this course to return to glory. Unfortunately, for the price-tag the Resort Course still leaves much to be desired. The greens currently are shaggy and at the same time burned out in places. Collars on the greens are not being maintained it seems. Fairways are fair. Cartpaths still have giant curbs most of the way and nearly break your carts axel getting on and off the course (make sure your head covers are on the woods or you'll be scratching those guys up!). Additionally, the patrons of the course seem to be just as rough around the edges these days. In the last couple outings at the Resort Course I've seen golfers with jeans on, shirts untucked and a guy so drunk he was doing "sand angels" in a bunker. Today, I didn't witness anything crazy but felt it needs to be said for a course that is suppose to be one of the prestigious ones in the city. Anyway, in my mind the course will always be a great layout and will always provide a "good round" with nice views of the city with resort level amenities. The staff outside at the bag drop and marshalls were great - 10/10 jobs! The pro-shop guys/gals could provide more of greeting and honestly should be upselling merchandise (nobody has said anything about replay specials, new hats/gloves/clothes etc. in any of the last ~10 rounds or so at the resort). Every course across the country needs to increase revenue - if you can't get more rounds in you better be selling stuff out of the shop! All in all, I do love this place and just want it to be the best it can be!
Resort Course @ La Cantera
The course re-opened 6 months ago after a redo of the greens and bunkers. Course is currently in great shape especially the greens. Played on a Saturday and was done in under 4 hours. The staff is very engaged and extremely friendly. The starter escorted us from the range to the first tee and have us some valuable tips for course navigation.
Very nice
Great course, very nice views. The staff was great and course was in great shape but the greens were very hard. I am from out of town and was paired with some locals who gave me hints. I would recommend this course.
Nice views and challenging holes
I was disappointed that after the course was improved not much changed. The 18th finishing hole is a great disappointment compare to other beautiful holes. The bar area was totally being remodeled so it was disappointing that we had to go two miles to find the 19th hole at a restaurant in the area.
I took my son to play what I thought was a first class course. The condition of the greens were terrible.
The cart boy was rude.
It was my son and grandson (6 years old) on one cart. They made us rent another cart because they would not let us have the three of us on one cart. Never has this happened before at other course. My grandson was not playing. Don't waste your money on this course. There are courses in San Antonio that are less money and better conditions. Not to mention they don't have stupid rules that take the fun out of a golf outing.
La Cantara
Course layout was great. They had recently renovated the greens so they were very firm. Of course they will get better with time as they need to grow in. Fairways firm which allowed for some good roll out.
Only downside was bar/restaurant was being renovated so could not use it. Overall a great experience. I would play here again.
Great Course
Great course loved everything about it me and my buddies are going to start coming to San Antonio once a month to play there
Variety Views
LaCantera Resort course is never short on views. The clubhouse overlooks downtown San Antonio and the connected driving range facility. The course isn't short on amenities itself either. The driving range is excellent and the practice putting green and chipping area are more than adequate to be warmed up before your round. LaCantera in its entirety does the best job of any place I've played golf at maintaining appropriate tee time promptness. The starter is quick to get you before your round begins. Escorts you to the course and gives all information before teeing off. The pace of play has never been a problem on either course as most of the rounds flow without ever seeing another golfer in front of you.
As for the course, I'd highly suggest not trying to walk it. The elevation changes here are as severe as any mountain course I've played. 100 foot drops from cliffs and climbs straight uphill are not uncommon. Many greens are elevated or sit in a valley well below the teeing grounds. The new greens rolled very smoothly and were quick despite the rain we had the previous day. Although, they were very hard and did not hold many shots (this is normal of many newly renovated greens). Be prepared for many sidehill or downhill lies along with spectacular views. The elevation changes make the course play much more difficult, but driver could be left in the bag for parts of the course as the longer holes play extremely downhill normally. A challenging, variety of holes with great views. I've played many courses that I enjoy the "golf" game itself much more, but if you enjoy a variety of great views including Six Flags Fiesta Texas and scenic Texas hill country I would recommend this course for you.
Fun, strategic, memorable and scenic
This course is terrific. Lots of memorable holes for strategy and scenery. Playing over and through some of the rock wall formations was fun. The bunkers were in excellent shape. The course provides a good challenge without being penal. Not walkable due to distances between greens and tees and elevations. There are several blind shots sometimes depending on your positioning. Interesting greens. You do get some noise on a couple of holes from the roller coaster next door, but it sort of adds to the charm. This is one of my favorite courses in the San Antonio area.
Beautiful layout. Scenic views
Great course. Very challenging yet fair. Scenery is awesome. Definitely a must play in SA
