Didn't live up to expectations
Sorry to say this course did not live up to our expectations. After all, it is located within a Resort setting. It has a great design, tough greens, and beautiful views. The course looked very tired and uncared for. Several of the tee boxes were bare dirt and not level. Some of the Ladies tee boxes were on the fairway. Lots of dry patches on the fairways. Just felt like this course has been neglected. Would have been upset if we had paid the full posted weekend rate. Got it at a cheap rate on GolfNow.
Unfair tract
Course is hilly, has way to many blind shots, and not in good condition. You can hit a ball right down the middle and never see that ball again. Narrow hilly fairways. Tees were awful, greens had so many ball marks, fairways are decent but very narrow and unfair. Not a very enjoyable course. Would never pay full price, but at $16 through golf now it was a good way to waste a Saturday afternoon. I won't return.
Good overall course
Could be a premier course but the funding for it has dwindled. Good greens - good fairways however the tee boxes leave something to be desired. Very challenging ! You get punished for bad shots. Watch out for the par 4 6th. If you get on the par 5 18th in 3 then you've really accomplished something. One of my favorite local courses, I just wish the price would reflect the condition of the course now in comparison to how nice it used to be.
Lots of elevation
Course was in good condition. Fastest greens i played all year, but were very bumpy. The name "Lakeview" doesnt really apply. There were some views of the lake, but not from a hole being alongside the lake. It's a mountain course with lots of elevation changes. Not really my favorite kind of course but it was nice. The biggest problem was the multiple foursomes of "Meatheads" playing ahead of us. If I would of kept playing all 18, It would of been well over 5 hours.
Don't play this course
Played on Labor Day. Course was extremely dry. Fairways were cracked from dryness. Off the fairway was all brown. Several leaves on course, so we had trouble finding balls. Golf course had narrow fairways. Stayed overnight. View of golf course/parking lot was view of parking lot and heads of golfers teeing off on first tee. Had a crab cake for dinner that was all filler. Waiters/waitress/bartender were understaffed. Bartender was serving drinks to customers outside. Outside Tiki bar was not open. Tiki torches were not lit. Overall bad experience. Only good thing was I paid reduced price through Golfnow.
Enjoying Day on the Golf Course
It was just me and my wife on the course. My wife is a beginner, with some physical limitations, that required lots of attention.
There was no one in front of us, so the pace was at our discretion yet the 4 hour pace would satisfy most players.
The sand traps were the best I've ever played out of, not to soft nor too hard. Even my wife got out of each trap she was in.
The greens were in good shape, rolling true. They were faster then the local greens I generally play on but fair as far as reading them and making the putts.
As with most mountain course, the fairways quickly ventured into the trees if you were off line.
Hole number 7 is a par 5 straight down the hill that offers a great view, of Cheat Lake with the mountains (Cheat Mountains?) above it.
Finishing hole 18 is a long 600+ yard (from white tees) that has a slight dogleg in it but making it even harder is that the last shot is straight up the hill.
Overall, we enjoyed the day on this beautiful golf course.
Great Mountain Views
Unfriendly staff but great course. Cart paths were awful and hard to drive the cart on.
This course is very hilly.
This course was to hilly for me. Even after hitting the fairway on my tee shot it would roll off. If you like a mountain course, i would highly recommend this one.
Very challenging greens
This course is listed as part of lake view resort but the mountain view course is not located anywhere near the resort. After driving several hrs to get to the resort and finding out we were at the wrong facility the directions to the new course made it hard to find. There is only a practice putting green located there and a small snack bar inside the little club like facility. They did meet is at our vehicle with a cart which was nice and informed us we would be paired up with a little Asian dude ( yes that's how they stated it ) we met up with young who turned out to be the best part of the round, we teed off on time course was busy the round took about 4:15 , the course was ok very challenging, probably made more difficult because the fairways were all burnt from the recent heat and lack of rain, the sand bunkers were all in daplorible condition with standing water in some of them like hitting out of concrete, the greens were tough and fast I'm sure local knowledge we make the course easier. Overall the course was ok nothing special only good hole view was # 17 I assume this course is treated as the ugly step brother of lake view resort and is treated as such would not drive back to play again.
enjoyable course
the course was challenging. the sand traps were in really bad shape (lots of rocks, lots of water), but overall; beautiful scenery, challenging holes, perfect weather. all is good.
Nice
The course was very nice and challengingand I have ran into three of your members and they were very helpful on the course..
Worth The View? I Think Not?
I wish I had read the review posted on 7/29 by vet013 from Greensboro, PA PRIOR to playing Lakeview and Mountainview on consecutive days on 8/4 and 8/5. Fortunately, I played both courses for a combined $65.00. I played the Lakeview 20 years ago when I was in graduate school at WVU and had fond memories. After playing Lakeview -- slow pace of play after 11th hole with no Ranger, little water to drink on the course, divots and ball marks galore, etc. -- and Mountainvew -- grounds staff cutting grass forwards from #1 and not backwards from #18 so as to not interrupt play, for example, and the most bizarre bounces OUT of the fairway this side of Scotland -- I'd not return ... to either course ... ever. Vet013 was spot-on!
Not for the beginner
The course was in decent shape. The rough swallows balls quickly and hides them well. Narrow fairways and multi-break greens give players of all skill levels a run for their money. The bunkers were well-groomed and a favorite destination for most of my shots, though takes were in short supply. I'll play it again, and it'll make me lose my religion again.
Never pay full price
This course has been lauded as an exceptional course in WV... One that previously hosted PGA events. The key word here is PREVIOUSLY. The course has been poorly maintained, due to Lakeview management handcuffing their Pro financially. Pace of play is usually slow at this course; do not expect to see a ranger, much less one out on the course managing pace of play. We have frequently run into staff, college aged kids, goofing off on the course playing around on carts on the course. We never saw a beverage cart and the snack shop at the turn was closed at 5pm!
This course does have a few challenging holes. The fairways on 3 and 6 slope excessively R to L and are almost impossible to hold. Numbers 5 and 7 have massive decreases in elevation from tee to green; both are par 5 eagle holes; driving from these two tees make you feel like a bigger man! After 4-4.5 hours of play, you finish on a 602 yard UPHILL par 5 that'll make you thankful your round is over - great challenging hole! There are several bunkers on this course, but do not expect them to be raked by staff daily. Often, bunkers are as solid as cement. Commonly, you will find that people playing this course are too lazy and disrespectful to fill divots with the sand provided in each golf cart and often ball marks on greens are not repaired.
This course charges anywhere between $50-79 to play. NEVER PAY FULL PRICE FOR THIS COURSE. ALWAYS BOOK THIS COURSE THROUGH ONLINE DISCOUNT GOLFING SITES. as rates are often $35 or less.
Overall, there is potential fr this to be a good course, management simply needs to put in the effort.
Good quality course
Course was in good condition . The staff was friendly
This place has a membership
The course in a tough one. Do not go off the fairway. Your ball will be gone. The ruff is cut to the length that hides your ball every time. I will say the course layout is interesting. Big hills that make for neat tee offs. Be prepared to lose a kidney. The cart paths are so bad I would compare them to bankrupt third world city's roads. The staff was friendly if not unfounded pretentious. They seem to impressed with the course which makes me wonder if the have ever seen a nice one. Who would spend the money for a membership here. Not this guy.
Understaffed
The sand in the bunkers was almost nonexistent, and there could stand to be some coolers of water available. Otherwise a nice Sunday spent golfing.
i am a golfer not a revieuwer
I would play this course again very nice to bad if you think my review is to short
Good overall
Nice course, would play again. Beautiful scenery to enjoy during your round
Very picturesque
The course if very nice, challenging. It is much overpriced at $ 60.00 for the week day. The greens were in excellent condition but hardly a level spot to be found. The traps were huge and the sand too course. Fairways in relatively good condition if a bit hardpan. I complained about the number of ticks we had to pull off ourselves to the pro-shop and said they should have warned golfers to be on the look out. They were everywhere, on the greens, flags, carts, our shirts, pants, shoes, etc. The pro-shop person did not seem concerned, surprised. or care. Not good public relations. If it were not for the ticks, we would have had an relatively enjoyable round.
