Hi Cindy,
When doing this drill, how do I keep from topping the tee shot? I've recently been having issues with that in my swing.
Best regards,
Ed McGowan
Ed
Be sure you tee the ball a little higher. Get some 3 1/4 inch tees. Have at least half the ball higher than the club head. Relax your arms. Place the club head at least a couple inches behind the ball. look at the grass between the club head and the ball. DO NOT LOOK AT THE BALL! Swing the club head and try to brush the grass. I guarantee the ball will go in the air!
Great drill! I am going to practice this drill this week. Can I ask what you think about when I go back from the drill to hitting the ball of the tee? how best to transition from the drill to the standard shot?
Bruce
I make sure I allow the club head to swing through and past the ball. So many times we try to HIT the ball. This drill tricks our brain and helps us feel the swing. We must swing the club head PAST the ball, NOT AT IT!
PAST the ball!. Got it. Great swing thought. thank you.
Does this work with most clubs of the tee? 3 & 5 wood?
David G
YES!
Seems that having the ball so much forward would make it easier to top the ball. Any thoughts?
James B
If you swing the club head through towards the target, the head will still be going towards the target line. If you come over the top, yes, you may top it. So, this is a great drill to test your swing to be sure you are swinging down the target line. If so, you will hit the ball dead straight and farther than normal because you will have more club head speed. Give it a try!
Nice drill. I will definitely give it a try.
Cindy,
Where should the ball placement be for the ball on the tee? Should it be where your normal ball position is or forward of that? Thank you!
Jeff D
You will set up with the imaginary ball being on your left heel as if the ball is where the imaginary new ball is. The real ball is just pretend. You are setting up to the imaginary ball.
Sounds good ,I’ll give it a try thanks
Ms. Miller - thanks for this interesting drill. It looks like you put the first tee in the ground about where one's normal ball position would be, and then tee up a ball 5-6" ahead of that - forward of the left foot. Won't the club path be more to the left when the clubhead runs into the ball, due to rotation? That seems like a pull is coming, and pretty likely a slice unless the clubhead squares up to the path at that point. Thanks for any thoughts on this.
Mark R
If you try to rotate your body through the ball, you are correct. You may tend to pull it. I swing the club head and try to extend it down the target line.
How do you keep from topping the ball with the ball set 5 inches in front of where you normally tee up the ball for the driver? Is this technique for training only or can this be used on the golf course as well?
Gerry D
If you tee the ball high enough and allow the club head to swing, you will not top it. I have used it in a major championship when I knew I was trying too hard. It will help you learn to let it rip and not hold on. Go ahead and try it! It’s fun!
Thanks, Cindy. Will do.
This and many other videos might be more impactful if the closed captioning text did not cover the ball in the videos.
