Real Club Valderrama
About
Valderrama Golf Club on Spain's Costa Del Sol is one of Europe's most prestigious golf courses.
It's a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design that has been constantly tweaked and renovated over the past years, bringing it to its current form.
The signature of Valderrama's design is its gently rolling parkland terrain throughout a cork tree forest, making for some very tight doglegs. Greens are also very small, except for the par-3 15th and par-5 17th, which have a little more room.
The course plays under 7,000 yards, even for the professionals, but this is a course that cannot be overpowered. The pros will hit a lot of irons off the tee. For the amateur, you're just trying to keep the tee shot in the fairway - or else it's tough to get out of the cork forest.
Though private, Valderrama does allocate a two-hour block of tee times between noon and 2 p.m. to public play. It's best to book at least three months in advance.

One of the World Greats
Along with Vidabaun, RTJ Sr.'s European Crown Jewels. More a tournament course than Vidabaun, the course is not anywhere near as claustrophobic as one might guess from watching tournaments on the TV. Holes 2, 8 and 18 are most directed by trees but they are manageable and the cork trees and umbrella pines are just amazing trees (This from one who finds trees generally a nuisance in USA)
The Par 3 holes are not all long dragged out affairs although#15 did require a 3w. Hole 3 was a 9i so there is variety.
Par 5 holes are certainly scenic and memorable with opportunities for the long hitter to try for a green in 2. A well-guarded green, an amazing uphill design and the famous 17th green modified by Ballesteros are quite varied.
Par 4 holes are quite varied in length, shape, demand and width/precision. Greens are not easy to read.
Certainly deserving of its reputation, Valderrama is a very expensive bucket-list that I can heartily recommend having played it multiple times over 10 years.
Doesn't get much better than Valderrama
Amazing condition in a superb setting. I had heard many times about the great condition of Valderrama. Its even better than I thought!!
The most surprising thing for me was the quality of the service we recieved from every single member of staff. At many private clubs they don't provide great service, but Valderrama is different. Wow service, great food and ons of the best courses in the World.
Hard to beat the experience. We will be back!!!
A Dream come true
One of the Best Course i've played. It's a must...
Bucketlist course
I had the privilege to play this awesome course with caddies and friends from Switzerland. Access to this historic course was extremely difficult but worth the time and effort to finally walk these special grounds. Course was in excellent condition, beautifully manicured with perfect fairways. Some of the greens showed signs of stress (they have bent grass greens, way down south, believe it or not!). The caddies were a great help to assist in pointing out hidden hazards and distances. The course is rather hilly and the wind can affect the ball flight in various ways. Staff was wonderful and went out of the way to make visitors (the few they allow through the gate) feel most welcome. Many restrictions are set up for guests of members to keep this jewel private and special to the members. A most memorable experience. One more thing: the cork trees (lining the fairways) are 90% wood (not air, as is mostly the case everywhere else).. Be sure to stop in the pro shop to take home some souvenirs.
