Big-name architects have left their mark on Corpus Christi Country Club over the years. Fred Mcleaod, then the winter professional at Maryland's Columbia Country Club, built the course in 1909, followed by a redesign at the hands of John Bredemus in 1921 and a rare visit by Robert Trent Jones in the mid-1960s. This beautiful links-style course offers open fairways and undulating greens where stiff winds can interfere with drives and cause high shots to blow wildly off course.
When the 9-hole course originally opened on the high-toned North Beach, President William Howard Taft was in Texas to visit his brother, who owned a ranch across Nueces Bay. Taft participated in the opening ceremonies in front of the green wooden building which is distinguished by its white trim and veranda on all four sides.
The course fell victim to the 1919 hurricane, and club members didn't reorganize until 1921. John Bredemus came down from Del Rio after the completion of the San Felipe Springs Country Club and immediately put crewmen to work clearing and grading for $1.50 a day. The fairways and greens were fertilized with cottonseed meal, and the first shot was fired on Labor Day, 1922. At the time, this course on the Texas Riviera was considered one of the finest in the country.
At the end of the Depression, oil was discovered under the course and wells produced from 1936 to 1943, increasing revenues but creating some interesting man-made hazards in the layout. By 1938, the club expanded the course to 18 holes. The existing Robert Trent Jones design opened in 1964 on Everhart Road.
Getting there : Exit the Crosstown Expressway off of I-37 and head south to South Padre Island Dr. Continue south and exit Everhart, then proceed for 3.5 miles to the course. The clubhouse is on the left side of the road.

Corpus Christi Country Club - Robert Trent Jones Masterpiece
Despite being in a difficult climate zone this course is always in pristine condition.
This is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. course. If you are familiar with his designs you know that he valued a risk reward design aesthetic. This course could be the perfect example of his philosophy.
This course has almost no elevation variance yet it maintains a slope rating of 140.
That tells you all you need to know about RTJ. No hills, no valleys, still a very challenging golf course.
Risk reward.
Almost all of the holes are lined with Big Dense Live Oak trees. Coupled with traditionally tall Bermuda grass roughs . If you miss the fairway you are going to find yourself in serious trouble. There are very few punch out windows. Your best bet is always get out of the rough with a shallow wedge back into play. Trust me, just take the stroke.
Robert Trent Jones must have been a real character. The course opens up to a par 4 a par 5 and then another par 4. Almost every player pulls their driver our on these holes ... don't do it.
The first hole is a 440 yard massive dog leg left that is well protected by strategically placed trees. Do not hit your driver on this. Hit regulation with a 5 wood or a tall iron. If you get in to the trees on this hole you are looking at a double bogie if you are lucky,
Hole 2 pretty much the same thing. Robert Trent Jones is messing with you. He knows you want to hit the big dog. Do it at your own peril. Just use a reliable hybrid or low iron down the middle. Check your ego and do the adult thing.
3 . Now you can slam one. if you slice it you will still have a decent approach angle to the green from the adjacent fairway. If you hook it a little you will be in the trees or out of bounds. Honestly I usually aim for the middle tree row hoping for a draw into the fairway or a strong fade into the other fairway. These problematic trees are a nightmare.
Hole 4 is a par 3 If you can hit a perfect 100 yard shot you have a birdie opportunity. If you can't your ball is going in the water or behind the elevated green where you will be swinging a wedge into the grass grain. This has destroyed many strong men.
I'm not going to cover all the holes on this brilliant course. If you make it though 4 you might get the idea. This course is tricky. It's diabolical. That is why it is great.
Anyone can enjoy this course. It is very difficult for an average golfer. If you are scratch you might break 80. Between the water hazards and the deep bunkers the punishments are severe.
That's the brilliance of this course. You must have impeccable fundamentals to score well here. If you can't hit the ball straight, If you don't have distance control, It's going to be a challenging day.
If you are a scratch golfer who enjoys strategy you will love this course.

The CCC was in excellent shape and the greens were rolling great! The added trees over the last. 25 years have made the course beautiful! Staff was very welcoming and friendly!
Great course
Course is in great shape even in the middle of July. Greens and fairways are in excellent shape. Staff is great and the atmosphere is top notch. Recommend to anyone looking to join!
