Sweetbriar Golf Club - Legacy 18

About
Located in Avon Lake, Sweetbriar Golf Club boasts two scenic 18-hole courses that are routed through natural wetlands and forests. The front nine of the Legacy Course was built in 2002 and the back nine was added in 2007. The nines have different landscapes, creating a diverse set of holes that will have you using all the clubs in your bag. The front nine has a links design with winding fairways and large greens while the back nine was carved from forests. With natural wetland areas and a number of interesting risk-reward par 5s, the back of the golf course has more of an east coast feel. The other 18-hole course at Sweetbriar was built in the 60s. It is shorter than the Legacy but is still challenging, which makes it great for beginners.

Sweetbriar 9 hole course
Overall the course was in good condition. It's pretty much turned into a housing development with some golf holes around it.
Great Course
The course was excellent for my first time playing here. It was a bit slower than anticipated due to league night but that is to be expected. The course was very well maintained and fun to play. They were doing a little construction on some of the paths when we played but overall, will play again. Also used the driving range and although not grass as I’d hope from this type of course, it was a nice setup to get a good warm up before the round.
Pretty good.
No walking is a little crazy, but that’s ok. The course is nice, it’s just kinda short, but the greens are pure. A bit pricey imho but I still play it a couple times a year.

Thank you for your feedback and for acknowledging the quality of our greens. We appreciate hearing your thoughts on our policies and pricing and will continue to work on enhancing our golfing experience.
Worth Playing
Nice course with layout that makes you think your way through your round. Several of the greens were in poor condition, with bare spots in the middle of the putting surface. I’ve played here several times before and never seen this. Pace of play was a bit slow, but it was a Sunday.

Thank you for your review and for highlighting the thoughtful course layout. We apologize for the condition of the greens during your recent visit and are addressing this issue. We appreciate your understanding regarding the pace of play on weekends and look forward to providing a better experience on your next visit.
Sweetbriar 9 is in really bad shape.
I would not recommend playing Sweetbriar 9. The course is in terrible shape and it is clear that the owners put 0 effort in maintaining. The greens are patchy and have like playing on asphalt. Legacy 18 is a great course and it’s clear all their maintenance effort goes into that course. I would recommend playing Legacy but stay away from Sweetbriar.
Great place. Slow pkay
I've always give good ratings for this course. This last time was not fun. The people there always nice and the food is good . The problem is playing over 5 hours is unacceptable. We had to call the pro shop to get people moving.. I think that the Rangers need to be a little more strict.
Solid Muni, Recommended
Moved to the area in the off season and I play here every week. Conditions have always been good to perfect, including after heavy rains the day/night before. Only had 1 day of 90 degree, and only 1-2 holes that get soggy at all.
Staff is helpful and friendly all of the time. Wish the drink cart started coming around earlier in the day, seems like they start at 3. Starters do a good job and I see rangers several times a round.
The driving range is pretty legit, lots of bays and targets and the mats are quality, if a little bit old. There’s 2 putting greens and a naked practice green, all pretty true to conditions on the course.
The price is a bit steep, but that’s supply and demand at work as this course is the best and most popular in the immediate area. Avoid Fridays, they pump the price up about 50%.
The carts and GPS are lovely and work very well, but they’ve sold so many ads that you’re literally closing them out AT LEAST once a hole to see the screen. Definitely MY biggest gripe, but probably just a personal thing.
Aside from the price and ads (which aren’t a huge deal), the only potential complaint can be pace of play. They stack tee times 10m apart, so on busy days, it’s a zoo. There’s league play in the afternoon on weekdays, so no late 18 a lot of the time.
I’ve played solo and 2 some rounds (15 caps) in just over 3 hours, but 3 and 4 somes on busier days have taken up to 5 hours. Basically, know what you’re getting into when you book a time— it’s a popular muni, you’re going to have a long round at peak hours in even decent weather.
The track itself is solid. Despite the short distance, it’s pretty well protected— and in a variety of ways that keep it interesting. Greens roll true— very subtle breaks that change with pin position. I’ve never seen it “slow,” which is a big plus IMO. Plays short, so consider the blacks if you’re looking to hit driver as much as possible. (You’ll have to shape several, even then.)
The club house and bar and grill are honestly impressive for a Muni. Porch is big and pretty, food is way better than expected, bar is well stocked, pours are legit and prices (like the golf) are only a little higher than ideal. Honestly a pleasant surprise the first time I checked it out, and I would definitely give them business even if I weren’t golfing.
Solid 4.5/5 overall, 4.85 for a big and popular Muni. Play and enjoy!!
