Wonderful Course
This course used to be a hidden gem. They redid it a few years ago and it is superb. It’s in great shape and the staff are always friendly and inviting. I’ve played here 10+ times every season for the last few years and I’ve always enjoyed it. This was not the case on my last visit. When we approached the #1 tee box, there was nobody on the first hole, nor did we see anyone heading to #2. Our foursome consisted of two scratch golfers and two +6-8 handicap players. The first 2 holes went smoothly. When we reached #3, we caught up to the foursome in front of us. Our group wasn’t playing at astronomical speeds, we may have been playing a little fast so we decided to slow down a bit and take our time. By the 5th hole, we were waiting 10-12 min on every shot. The group in front of us had zero golf etiquette. They were at least an entire hole behind the group in front of them. We watched as one member of the group hit a ball into the water hazard, then proceeded to drop another ball and hit another shot from the same spot, which again went into the water. To our amazement he then went to his bag and pulled out a third ball. He took his time lining up what would now be his third shot from the same spot only to slice it again into the water. They refused to let us play through even though the group in front of them was nowhere to be seen. We hoped they would only be playing 9 but we knew that was wishful thinking. The back 9 was astonishingly worse. As this group continued to leave their beer cans and relieve themselves anywhere on the course they wanted, the pace was almost brought to a standstill. On #16, a par 3, they were on the hole for a total of 38 minutes. Hitting second and third shots throughout the round, we saw no ranger to whom we could express our frustrations to. Our round of 18 holes took us almost 6 hours to finish. This is completely unacceptable for any golf course, especially when there are comparable courses in the area for less than $70/round. I hope this was just a one time occurrence but I have a feeling this place that was once a hidden gem is now being taken over by blithering idiots who have zero class and zero etiquette
Beautiful, challenging
Great course, very challenging. The greens were rolling super fast.
Beautiful Course
Course was in great condition. Greens are challenging. Beautiful setting in Black River valley with bluffs across the water on several holes. Water comes into play on several holes. Restaurant is very good.
Nicklaus course
Course itself.....great. Well manicured....great layout....etc. Here is my biggest complaint. If you are going to be a Jack Nicklaus course and charge what you charge.....PUT IN REAL PAVED CART PATHS! Don't love eating all the dust from the cart in front of me and can do without all the bumps and pot holes. You want to be a 5 star course then be a 5 star course. Better cart paths at local muny's.
Well maintained and challenging
Loved this course. Well maintained and challenging with beautiful natural scenery. The restaurant was great afterwards for drinks and dinner on the patio. Will definitely be back!
Exceptional afternoon
Course and layout fantastic. You’ll use the whole bag here and be challenged all the way.
Price is unbelievable. The only issue we had was with the service staff between 9’s they were non existent, we saw them but they were to busy eating lunch in the back room. Luckily we had beverages/water in the car as we’ve seen this show on previous visits.
The Valley on a Beautiful Day
Staff is welcoming, course crowded resulted in slow pace (my own group looked our share of lost balls), but Thanx to GN for Hot Deals special. Greens recently punched & topdressed, so they were slow & bumpy. Course layout is quirky (a few sets of parallel holes and tee boxes next to each other), cart paths are dusty (blacktop in near future) .......but the views from elevated tees are outstanding. This was a tough day to score, so I'll be back again to redeem myself. Btw, restaurant - Black River Tavern onsite, is outstanding, and reception Hall is great setting for your special event.
Not impressed
For it being Nicklaus Design, I expected better. Course conditions are below average with down trees all over the place, patchy grass, and the cart paths are some of the worst I’ve ever experienced. It unfortunately rained and the paths were not even rock, they were mud. The course layout is decent, but I did not see any trash cans, didn’t have any ball washers, or more importantly, they didn’t have any rangers to speed up slow play. The 4some ahead of us was holding up groups even behind us.
