Lancaster Country Club

About
Founded in 1909, Lancaster Country Club is one of Ohio's oldest golf courses. The layout is the result of a collaborative effort involving Donald Ross and Jack Kidwell. The course was originally only nine holes that were designed by members of the club. They were then redesigned by Donald Ross in 1926. In 1959, Kidwell, a ubiquitous name in Ohio, added another nine holes. The golf course sprawls across rolling terrain that provides interesting elevation changes throughout. Mature trees are liberally scattered along the fairways. Golfers will often be faced with a blind shot on this tricky course. It requires careful strategy and a fair amount of skill. Water hazards come into play on seven holes and there are several strategically placed bunkers along the greensides and fairways.

Very rude PGA Professional
The PGA Professial, Chris Jones, was rude and unprofessional when I visited the pro shop. Lancaster country club describes itself as customer service friendly but that was not the experience I had. Chris continuously talked over me during our conversation. He also made sure to emphasize that he went to law school to me. I find it comical that his goal is to build lasting relationships with members and guest. Hopefully he will learn how to treat his guests.
Knowledgeable PGA Pros
If you get the opportunity to play this course, DO NOT hesitate to take the challenge. Rolling fairways and greens that would challenge the PROS. The pro shop is warm and inviting, the food is AWESOME!! The receptive and grateful staff makes you feel like family, VERY accommodating to your needs that will make your round enjoyable.
Excellent Course
I have played this course several time and it still remains one of my favorite courses in this area. The fairways are always perfect and the green continue to roll fast throughout the golf season.
Great lesser-known course
If you're willing to drive a little bit - for us it was about a 40 min drive - then you're in for a treat. This golf course was great! From the back tees in wet conditions, this course will give you all you want but such a fun course to play. Highly recommend!
An iconic golf course that must be on your list to play!
Challenging but a very fair course. This Donald Ross designed track is a well established golf course that every golfer should have on their "golf course to do list"! Layout requires both left to right and right to left shots. The greens are somewhat undulating but not too cutesy like some of the newer courses. Some risk reward holes may just demand you leave your driver in the bag while others let you get it out and let it rip! All in all the course will leave you wanting to challenge it a second or even a third time!
Fun Golf course
First time playing Lancaster CC. Great Donald Ross course. Not overly long but challenging with few flat lies. Course is laid out kind of strange but we were able to navigate through it easily. The views were wonderful. Overall it was a very good experience and I look forward to playing it again. Staff was awesome and wanted you to have a great round.
Great value for the money
Beautiful old course with lots of mature trees..fairways are good, but rough is somewhat unconditioned. Greens had been aerated not to many weeks ago so lots of bumps, but they are still very quick.....There is very little course signage so if this is your 1st trip you will be looking at the scorecard a lot to figure out where to go for the next tee box. There is in ground signage at tees , but since it is a private course I guess they assume everyone knows where to go.
It is an old course and was probably fantastic 10-15 years ago, but still worth a round on a beautiful afternoon.
Had higher hopes
I was very excited to play this course and let me state the course was in good condition and in a beautiful setting. However the attitude of the staff was not pleasant. The club pro yelled at me and my friend for cutting in front of another group making the turn. We where told to go off the back so we would not run into that evenings league but where never told about a group making the turn. I was shocked at the rudeness of the gentleman but did not want to judge the course based on one individual. When we where making the turn we went to grab a snack for the other 9. We where told at the club house to go to the halfway house for food. The halfway house was closed so we played 18 with no food or drink options. I was considering a membership at the location next spring but will now continue with my public membership where I feel more welcome.
Lancaster
Second time playing the course -- liked it both times. The course has hills so different then most flat Columbus course. Glad it is showing up again on Golf Now.
Course needs better hole markings for folks new to it. We got lost and went from hole 6 to 9.
Had a 11 tee time on Sunday and the course was all ours -- no one on it.
Course was air rated but still had fast greens.
The first I've ever played this course.
I was expecting to putt on silky smooth greens but after playing the first hole, we saw that the greens had all been aeriated. Your ball bounced like a basketball when we putted!!! Over all I enjoyed the course and would play it again if I knew the greens were going to be a lot smoother.
greens were great
Everything was really good. The only complaint is getting food or drinks. Bar was closed to get a beer or other drink when we finished at 6:30 pm
Lancaster country club
This is a private course. I wanted to play because of the Donald Ross design. The Ross front 9 is amazing. The back 9 should be blown up. Its goofy golf and does not fit with the front. Out of the 9 hole Ross country club designs I LOVE this 9 but every other 9 hole Ross has a better other 9.
great course!!
First time playing this course. Had a blast. Took my wife's uncle while he was in town visiting from Akron. He loved it too. Lots of challenges. Plenty of hills and greens were nice and fast.
Scenic course that is definitely worth playing.
This is a private course that recently started making limited tee times available for open play. The restaurant was closed on the day we played and we had to ask directions to the pro shop which was located in a small building tucked away down several flights of steps and hidden from view from the parking lot. Once inside the pro shop we were greeted by the pro who was cordial and who gave us a brief overview of the course layout.
The first hole is a short uphill par 4 which can make for a difficult opening drive if you are not properly warmed up as the fairway is a little tight with trees and a small creek to the right. After that the course opens up and the fairways are wider. The fairways and greens were well maintained although the greenside bunkers were not raked on many holes and were covered with animal tracks. Balls hit toward the periphery of the fairways were harder to find due to the leaf cover. The pace of play was great for the first six holes and then we caught up to the foursomes in front of us and then the pace slowed considerably. Our longest wait was on the first few holes of the back nine as we had to wait for the groups in front of us to clear the fairway. Despite the slower play on the back, we still finished in around four hours. On a few holes it was necessary to drive up and check the fairway to avoid hitting into the group ahead. Better signage on the tee boxes identifying the hole numbers would help with course navigation for first time visitors, but the map on the back of the scorecard adequately resolved any questions.
I would definitely try to play here more often if I lived closer to the course.
This is an excellent course that has a lot of blind tee shots or 2nd shots. The greens are a nice size and it is well bunkered.
This is an excellent course. It is a little out of the way and not easy to get if you have not been there but what a surprise. It has great greens and a lot of blind or hidden shots that really challenge you. Many of the fairways are lined on both sides with trees adding to the challenge. It helps to play with someone who has been there or is a member and keeping it in the fairway is a must.
Lancaster
This course eats up balls because of the longer rough and leaf cover around the course. Besides some work being done on a few fairways on the front nine the course condition is great. Overall, very nice course and for the money It is well worth the experience.
Hope they go public...
This course was by far in the best condition of any course i've played this year. the layout is fun and challenging. Can't wait to go back. Part of me wishes they would go public but my fear would be that it would invite players who would tear up this beautiful course.
Great Experience
I am glad they got on golf now. Otherwise I would have never heard about this course. Definitely a cut above the rest with a true Country Club feel. Built after1909 so you know it was an ideal spot. Like playing in the forest with greens harder to read than Black hawk but the course is playable if you can hit the driver somewhat straight. Kinda felt like you could land on the greens or roll onto them if you chose that style of play. Water was around but not a serious obstacle but you will be getting your money's worth out of your sand wedge. The sand was denser than the pros play on TV but you could still get out with a shallower digit and more of a wood chopping swing. Best conditions and beautiful peaceful scenery I have seen in my 1.5 years golfing...even beat my favorite, Cooks Creek. Put it on your bucket list. If the age and condition of the clubhouse will bother you, then stay away with your negativity. Use your GPS and it may send you back a different way thru the hills.
Hidden Gem
Played here for the first time and loved everything about the place. Tight tee shot on number one but after that the course opens up. Every trap was perfectly maintained and the greens were great 10 days after aerification. No problem with leaves at the end of September was a nice surprise. On a few holes you might want to drive up and check the fairway to avoid hitting into the group ahead and also for shot placement but for the most part the course is right in front of you. Donald Ross got this one right! Ashley and Jeff in the pro shop were a lot of help and restaurant was very busy on a Thursday night so the food must be good. MapQuest is a must to find the golf course but I had no problem following the directions. Try this course, you will not be sorry you did!
A got to play course!!!!
I've been invited hers for tourneys before and could never make it. I finally got on and WOW. From the fist hole to the 200+yd 18th, from tee to green this course was great. No 2 holes had the same feel. Every hole with character, being bends, elevations, slopes, protected greens and other characteristics. The staff was super friendly, the course, though recently airified, still was in top shape. I've paid $60.00 and not seen the value Golf Now has brought us. I'll be going back a few more times before old man winter gets here. My advice.... You need to go too!!!!
