Municipal course that hadn’t been well maintained. New management of course that is starting to address issues. Nice carts, friendly staff and not a bad layout. Lots of big old oak trees on course. Starting to remove and trim some. Lots of dandelions in rough, don’t use yellow balls!
Excellent golf course!
The greens and fairways were in great condition. Will have to come again. We really enjoyed this amazing course
Making a comeback.
Greens are better and new carts make this a much improved golf course. I hope they can keep making improvements. The course has great location and history.
Enjoyed the course, definitely got my money worth! Would pay it again.
Three of us went or Old Avalon golf course last Friday at 6:15 pm the course was wet and they told us to keep the golf carts on the path. When we were teeing off on the 3rd hole the starter shove up to us and said to pick up Thad pause while one of us was on the tee ready hi hit the ball. On the 8th hole he came again and said I thought I told you to hurry up. I told him it’s a little tough when you have to walk to the other side of the fairway to find your ball then back to get the right club. There wasn’t anyone but us on the course. All in all it took 2-1/4 hours. Won’t go back there till they get new managers.
It was a hay field
The grass was extremely high when i played. It made it almost impossible to cleanly strike the ball on every shot. Good luck trying to hit a 3 wood if you alwerent dead nuts in the fairway. Granted they were in the process of mowing while we made it to 17, but I dont know how often they do now as bad as it was.
Course Conditions Improving
Course Conditions Improving but still long way to go to get course back to where it was years ago. Greens very good condition but lot of overgrown vegetation and weeds on perimeters of golf holes.
Course is improving, suggest trying it at least once
Decided to give this course a chance this year, and I was surprised with the improvements to the greens. The fairways were nothing spectacular, remain how they have been for the most recent years. Rough was high, had some issues looking for balls just off the fairway.
The Greens, however, were the nicest they have been in some time. The were a little on the high side, but rolled true and had a decent speed. I can tell they have put some work into improving the greens.
The off-course amenities are lacking. Food/Refreshments are minimal (no sunday alcohol sales), driving range is just a place to hit very used balls, practice greens are not that great.
Overall, I have played this course twice and will more than likely play it again. If you are just a casual golfer looking for a cheap round, this is your place. If you are someone use to playing nicer courses, you will be disappointed.
Course has potential but needs lots of work
Starter said the course just opened after being closed for a couple of years. The fairways were in very bad condition but the greens were decent. With more rain and some TLC the course will get much better. There are some fun holes.
This course was a cow pasture. Very disappointing even at $10.
Poor maintenance over the years
I used to play this course when it was privately owned. When it was well maintianed and beautiful. Ten years later, now owned by the city. Little maintnance and the course looks terrible and run down. The only diff between the rugf and the fairways is the fairways are mown shorter. There is clover and grabgrass covering the fairways. I went on a friday afternoon and their were only six cars in the lot, that included the employees. I would NOT reccomend this course to my worst enemy!!
Good challenging course, fair price. Had a great day of golf
Not bad for price of 18!! Upkeep is the main concern
Rough a little longer than normal. Greens could of been blown off with leaves but for the value and location of the course you can't go wrong. Just a little more upkeep overall of course keeps me only giving three stars. Staff very friendly. Only went out myself and got 18 holes with a stop to get a drink after 9 only 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Played Sunday afternoon, play was a little slow.
Greens were very nice, fairways were ok, looks like they are making progress, hope that get it back to the way the course used to be.
The new pro could not have been nicer.
Better bring a large divot tool!
For $10 for 18 I normally don't complain. But this course is in worse than bad condition. Let's start in the clubhouse. Clubhouse is old and outdated. Staff is very unfriendly. Tried to buy beer and they said they don't sell on Sundays. Huh? Made a joke about him looking away while we got beer and we will leave the money on the counter. The guy looked like we shot his dog. Now to the course. Tee boxes are poorly cut. Fairways and roughs as well. Also hasn't been watered in....well since it rained last. All of this I could forgive if the greens were well kept. But they aren't. They literally have chunks larger than my mallet putter missing out of them. With no effort given to fix them. Only way I play here again is if they pay me to come play.
Course is in OK shape for being closed a couple years. Drainage is horrible tho. Hasn't rained for awhile and the course is soaked. Front 9 is 90 degree and back is cart path only. Losing balls because the plug all over. Staff was great. I would play again if it doesn't rain for a month
