Sunday
Played Sunday afternoon, play was a little slow.
Greens were very nice, fairways were ok, looks like they are making progress, hope that get it back to the way the course used to be.
The new pro could not have been nicer.
Better bring a large divot tool!
For $10 for 18 I normally don't complain. But this course is in worse than bad condition. Let's start in the clubhouse. Clubhouse is old and outdated. Staff is very unfriendly. Tried to buy beer and they said they don't sell on Sundays. Huh? Made a joke about him looking away while we got beer and we will leave the money on the counter. The guy looked like we shot his dog. Now to the course. Tee boxes are poorly cut. Fairways and roughs as well. Also hasn't been watered in....well since it rained last. All of this I could forgive if the greens were well kept. But they aren't. They literally have chunks larger than my mallet putter missing out of them. With no effort given to fix them. Only way I play here again is if they pay me to come play.
The course
Course is in OK shape for being closed a couple years. Drainage is horrible tho. Hasn't rained for awhile and the course is soaked. Front 9 is 90 degree and back is cart path only. Losing balls because the plug all over. Staff was great. I would play again if it doesn't rain for a month
Buzzkill
I scheduled a teetime on the golf now app and when I went to play with my buddies the guy at the desk said they had a golf outing that day and realized he double booked the entire golf course so I didn't get to play. Even though it wasn't my fault I still got charged to make a tee time and didn't get to play. Needless to say my first experience wasn't great because there was none. They can keep my reservation fee it's not worth the hassle. There are many golf courses in the area that have competent people working at them I will just stick with those. So much for trying a new place to golf.
Course is Slowly Improving....
For the first time playing the course this year, I was very impressed with the condition of the course. Beware, the rough is high in a lot of spaces, especially on the back 9. Avoid playing if there is a lot of rain in a short amount of time, or over a few days as the course doesn't drain well.
Pros:
- Greens were firm and fast. They rolled pretty true, as well. There were a few spots that were burned out and somewhat unplayable, but the pins were not in those spots.
- Carts. Fairly new, gas carts. Seats are very well cushioned, smooth ride.
Cons:
- Fairways are nothing to write about. Better than your backyard, but not by much. The course has always been this way, though.
- Course isn't well manicured. Sandtraps have not been maintained with some overgrown.
- Food. Decent selection, prices are a little expensive for what you get.
Overall, it was a great value for the price, and the greens were some of the nicer ones I have played this year. They are doing a good job of getting the course into playing condition, but they have a ways to go. I think they will get there, and I will continue to play the course until they do!
Making a comeback
After a few down years it is nice to see it coming back strong. Keep up the hard work!!!
Good challenging course
Greens were very fast. 18 th hole had a strip of barren area where the ball jumped up hopefully fixed soon. It has the potential of being extremely nice course if minor repairs upkeep done. Over all enjoyed playing there very much. will be back soon.
NE Ohio Spring Golf
The course was in pretty good shape considering how wet it has been here the last few weeks. Typical for spring golf in NE Ohio. Look forward to playing here again really soon.
Never Again
Okay...the course probably is fun to play but stay away during Fall. Never, never, never before have I played a golf course that absolutely has no interest in cleaning fallen leaves throughout the entire golf course. As a twosome we easily lost 10+ golf balls in the FAIRWAYS!! PATHETIC!
Old Avalon is getting clode
We decide to try Avalon South becasue of the rate we saw on GolfNow. We had played there a few times earlier in the year when they first re-opened. At that time the course was still in need of some work, on our return vist the fairways were in really good shape and the greens were in 100% beeter shape since they had a few months to work on them. We had a really good time depsite the brief wind and sleet.
Rough around the edges
The course needs some tlc to get it back to its prime. The greens were in pretty good shape considering what the course has gone thru after being closed last year.
Avalon is getting better
This place still has work to do. But you can't beat the price through golf now
Old Avalon back up and running
The greens were in very nice condition but a few fairways were rather thin. It was in the fairways that the fact that the course had been closed to play for almost 18 months showed. It reopened in June 2014. I hope it stays running. It is a course that if you play well you can shoot a low score but it will give you the chance. Some local knowledge helps but there are no trick holes. My son and I had fun. He broke 80 and I did not. But on the course with ones son, does the score really matter?
Getting Better Every Day-Excellent design
Great results with all the effort to restore the course.
Front nine greens are ready and the back nine greens should be ready by September 1, 2014. This is one of the best deals in golf in Northeast Ohio and its worth the drive.
Hard greens
No sand bunkers greens are hard as a rock. Great price on golf now hot deal.
Probably won't be back
The course overall is in poor condition. Some problems include crab grass on the tee boxes, poorly cut greens, and inadequate fairway condition to name a few. The only saving grace was the $22 price we payed after 2.
good for even a first time player
hard fairways short grass not too many hazards beer is cheap ;)
Coming Back
This is a municipal course that was closed for a full year due to poor management by the City of Warren, OH and the managers of the course, contractors. Dandelions on some greens and approaches was ugly. Some greens damaged by last winter. Trying to come back, management group with another course in area. No one working but the moneytaker in the clubhouse. Clubhouse still great facility. Riding cart, good shape, has driving range, putting green. We played on a Sunday, 9:14 AM twosome. Played quick. Fairways overall no too bad. Fee, I am sorry, is too high. $20 per player would be fair
Not bad
For a course that has been closed for a couple years, it is in good condition. The Greens need some work, but other than that it's a good course for the price!
It used to be a good golf course.
It used to be a good golf course, but now it is below average. There are few ball cleaners and those have no water. It is one of the bumpiest courses I have played this year. Like most poor golf courses it lacks the maintenance to keep it up. The nice homes along the back side gives the course character.
