Red/White at Limekiln Golf Course

Great local course with 27 holes; great pace and friendly staff.

It's been a long & lousy winter up here and the course is still recovering, which is the only reason I didn't rate as excellent. Up until a couple of yrs ago, I only played this track occasionally because I considered the rough much too severe (i.e. U.S. Open length). However, a couple of seasons ago I discovered that had changed for the better & when I inquired with the ranger, learned a new groundskeeper had been hired (amen!). So I increased my frequency of play there & learned to appreciate the challenges the course has to offer. All 3 of the 9's (my favorites are the white & blue) are more than playable for the 25 handicapper, but all level players will need a good putter because the greens, which I find roll very true, are the primary course defense on many holes...and some of the pin placements will really test your reading skills (i.e. speed & line are equally important).

In summary, very nice venue with lot's of room. In fact it's probably almost twice the acreage that a 27-hole'r would be built on today and there's only one hole that is lined with visible homes, but they sit will off the rough. So if you like a challenge, especially when you're on the "dance floor", you'll really enjoy the place.

Oh and one last thing, keep an eye out for an American Bald Eagle. Don't recall when I saw him last but when I did, I found it a sight to behold. I actually had the luck to catch him tearing into a snack right on the Red #8 fairway that parallels a small lake. So cool!

Haven't played Limekiln in many years (I only play where I can get deals) but it was nice to be out on this course again. It was in pretty good shape considering the winter weather we had. Only one hole had to be reconfigured due to some winter damage . The course was pretty open so the windy conditions affected play but not too badly. Once the foliage blooms, the wind may not have as much an impact and the course will be even prettier.

I'm looking forward to getting another good GolfNow deal and playing Limekiln again later in the season.
