Not worth the money
This course isn’t what it used to be. The course is very poorly taken care of. Looked like the rough hadn’t been mowed all summer - shots right off the fairway get lost in it. The fairways had dirt patches everywhere and the greens were patchy as well. Wouldn’t recommend this course for the price. Check out a different city course if you have the option.
Average Course With Poor Staff
Very unfriendly staff. Through a mix-up, we accidentally paid for 4 players when we only had a group of three. When we tried to get refunded for the additional player, the gentlemen refused and told us that it was “against the rules”. Not sure what rule involves making people pay extra when it was his fault, but it doesn’t seem right.
Besides that, the course can’t sell beer, the greens are not well kept, and some of the tee boxes are literally just hitting out of the rough. Not sure what I expected from a municipal course but this was a bad experience.
Champions is tough
Difficult course for the average golfer. The rough is for real. You aren’t getting out of it without penalty. Greens were tough, lots of multilevel greens to increase the challenge of putting. It is a weird oasis in the middle of a rough neighborhood. Course was in good shape overall with a few areas that were beat up. Will probably be back when my game improves. Highlight : made a nice par on the #1 handicap hole with a decent drive and a 4 iron to within 15 feet
Great Course - Staff Not Super Friendly
Played at Champions a half dozen or so times. First time playing since the new clubhouse was built - so it’s been awhile. Course was in great shape. Carts were on the path or in the rough only today. No driving in or through the fairways. Sand bunkers were raked and full or sand. Could take a nice divot in the fairways. Greens were in good shape and rolled true. Trees along the fairways add a lot of challenge.
Staff was not super friendly. I will say, they are a bit pretentious. When I got there, the person in the clubhouse told me that I was paired with two other golfers and told me I could not go as a single. I was also told that I had to go get my clubs and bring them to the carts as there were to be no carts in the parking lot. (Though I passed two carts unloading/loading from their cars as I drove in). I was then told to wait until the other twosome showed up. I waited for 10 minutes before going back inside and I was told that I could go to the starter who would pair me up. Turned out the starter was very nice and didn't care. He told me I could pair up or go out own my own. After the round was over, I wasn’t sure where to go to return the cart. I was then stopped by the same person from the clubhouse earlier, who again sternly told me that there were no carts in the parking lot. I asked where to return the cart and the person said "oh" and pointed to a spot (that required driving the cart through the parking lot). Would play here again - but just FYI about the staff.
Course was in very good shape. I had a 7:30AM tee time that I booked as a single player, and apparently the group I was supposed to play with never showed.
I ended up playing 18 holes in 2 1/2 hours. Played through 2 groups, everyone was very courteous and aware of golf etiquette.
The grounds crew were hard at work and very courteous, but always paused what they were doing as I played up to them. They were also very helpful on several occasions during my visit.
Already have a tee time for the this upcoming week and will play here much more in the future.
Almost there!
Champions used to be one of my favorite golf course in the area especially since I had annual city pass that allowed me to play all the city golf courses. It has seen its up and down days. This was my first time playing since last year since it closed until sometime in June of this year. One thing about this course is that water do not drain well so try to avoid playing it after rain. Due to recent heavy rain from day before, course was extremely wet and my tee shot would plug pretty much on every hole. Some of the tee boxes were in poor shape. Not sure what's going on but tee boxes are really beat up on some holes. Fairways were great, rough had some areas that were bare, and greens were excellent. New club house makes the course feel more modern. I always enjoy my round here and today was no exception. Their prices are little higher but course is also little more exciting compared to other city courses. I just hope they fix the minor issues now so that the course will be in tip top shape going forward. Lastly, they had a young kid as starter. I guess he felt like he wanted to be in charge because he tried to point out some dumb rules that didn't exist or made no sense. He told one of our guy that he needed to go buy range ball to chip and putt since he is not allowed to use your own golf ball. Huh? This was right before we were about to tee off. He also came by and warned me to stay on the cart path when all I did was park about 3 fee off the cart path on a high area under a tree to get some shade. That area has little to no grass and mostly tree roots and high area so ground was not wet. I was no where near the fairways or the rough. I didn't want to make big deal out of it so I just said ok and moved on but I'm sure many others might have taken more offense to that. Kids needs some more training and don't become a rule stickler. LOL
Really good course, showing some wear on the tee boxes
The course was recently reopened and was very busy the day I played. I knew it would be slow sandwiched between 2 foursomes (I was playing solo) and it was. At the turn I ended up behind a slow 3 some that didn't invite me to join, or play through, even though it was appropriate. The ranger came by and didn't help out either so I ended up stuck behind them until I just played through uninvited.. I was surprised the ranger wasn't more assertive. At any rate, the course is an excellent challenge and the only condition complaint was that the tee boxes are really in bad shape as no sand seems to be available to fill divots....probably a COVID thing.
Greats day at Champions!!
I had a free day coming up and a promo code And a reasonable tee time and $ was offered by golfnow, so I jumped on it. Glad I did. Paired with a fellow single who played as fast as I and was relatively knowledgeable about the course. Champions is in excellent condition with the exception of #4 tee box. The work the course staff have done is very evident. The traps are even in great shape. I highly recommend this course, even though a city course, over most in the City, especially City of Columbus courses and most of them are in very good shape.
Hard course
Great course, but extremely hard for my skill set. Also it was really expensive and did not have pin placement
They don’t honor Golfnow specials
Didn’t honor the golf now deal, the guy seemed insulted that I didn’t go through his website, charged me full price since I booked it through Golfnow even though his rate was lower
