This beautiful, well constructed course , is a pleasure to play. The greens are in the best condition ever, though a little long . It's wet now , but drains as well as any course on Whidbey Island. Never mind the "hazard" sand traps, just toss the ball out, no closer to the hole. Sand IS however, on the way. And the price is right.
Harbor Point Improvement
Played 18 today, course is rough, expected after being closed for the years. Improvements being made. Sand Traps are next, removing weeds is needed. Course as executive course will be great by end of summer. I look forward to playing more rounds.
Not like it use to be
This course has really gone down hill. The bunkers are weed traps, the tee boxes were like playing from the rough and the greens were covered with grass clippings. The carts are filthy too. Only good thing as that Golfnow price was $35 but was only charged $25 to play 18.
I was recently on Whidbey for a vacation and found some time to squeeze in a quick round. Chose Holmes strictly by location. As I pulled into the parking lot, I was very dubious about the potential round. If you go, don't let the "clubhouse" put you off. Just pay your green fee and get ready to play a unique round of golf. Yes, the bunkers are over grown w weeds and some of the rough areas are terrible, but the bones of this course are amazing. It's definitely not an "executive" course. No, you can't hit the driver on every hole, but it's plenty long to make it a legitimate test of golf. A little context...I'm a 6 handicap and play 80-100 rounds per year. This course made me think and plan and execute more than most. I honestly used every club in my bag. The elevation changes, doglegs, and tilted fairways make for a fun and interesting round. My only caveat is unless you are in great shape, don't try to walk this beast. The hills will have you breathing so hard that you can barely putt.
Not like it use to be
Played this course many times over the years and until a few years ago was a great course excellently maintained and staffed. Not any more. Bunkers have become weed patches, greens are so-so and service is nil. Its a shame. The layout is outstanding.
Great course for beginner golfers
If you are just starting out this is a great course to build confidence, yet challenge yourself during your round. My only critique, is I'm not sure what they are trying to do with the sand traps. They are completely overgrown and could be called a weed trap instead. Overall it was a great round and I look forward to playing it again.
Fun on Whidbey Island
I have played at this course for over 10 years. It is always fun with lots of par 3's. Good iron practice! The greens were very slow and seems like that may have been punched recently. I sure hope that the new? owner works on getting the bunkers back into play and increases mowing schedule as it was sometimes very difficult to find the ball even just if off the fairways.
They're working very hard to bring this scenic and fun layout back to total playability. It's a well bunkered course, but their restoration is not yet complete, with those still needing attention being playing as "ground under repair."
The use of recycled water is perforcely the future of golf course management but, upon reaching the par three12th hole, or "Stinky, " as one might dub it, the reality of this practice wafts acridly from the storage pond over which you fly your tee shot. Thankfully the next tee box is far enough away from the 12th green that you can once again inhale the clean air of the Island.
Tight Course but Fun to Play
Very hilly and very narrow fairways. A short course that plays a little longer than the scorecard because of some of the uphill shots. Greens were above average in speed and tricky pin placements throughout with some undulated greens. Nice views of the Sound from the course. A few real nice golf holes. No clubhouse yet or restaurant. Smelly ponds on the back 9 with reconditioned water.
Very good, and improving steadily
I first played this course shortly after it was re-opened. It was also a different time of year, but the course is in much better shape now, including the greens, which still aren't perfect, but are WAY improved. The owner, and I assume his daughter, were working on bunkers when I was there, which she said at the beginning of the round were considered ground under repair.
The views are spectacular, the course has nice challenges without being terribly difficult, and the price is reasonable.
I think the club house is undergoing renovation too, since my check-in was handled at a temporary trailer, instead of the building, as it was last time.
I enjoyed the golf & the views....some change is going on re: the restaurant... new owners? not sure did not ask... did not mater to us, but heard it mentioned... Only thing I noticed was no place to sit & have drink & add score & get paid all the money owed me from my playing partners...SO can rate food/beverage left it at ave.
although the front 9 was just punched & sanded, the back was much better. It's drying up and coming around nicely. There is still some work for the new owners to complete but it was a good time.
