Everything a city country club golf course should be

Not all century-old big-city country club golf courses stand the test of time, but the former Tripoli Country Club, now the University Club of Milwaukee, has done so beautifully. Recent renovations have preserved the Golden Age dignity and sensibility of the Tom Bendelow-designed golf course here, whose sensational greens drive the delight of a round. Mounds feed on and off the putting surfaces, which cause changing hole locations to make approach shots play differently one day to the next - essential for a course that hundreds of discerning golfers call home.

All other trappings of a nice country club are here, too: well-stocked pro shop, nice clubhouse and locker room, excellent course conditions and gracious people. If you find yourself in Milwaukee and with the opportunity to play here, you will enjoy it.

Continue to be unimpressed

I continue to be unimpressed by this boorish "club" on the north side of Milwaukee. Made the mistake of trying to play here a second time after a less than impressive trip last year. Won't make that mistake again as the welcome mat was definitely not laid out for a single player trying to fill a gap on the tee sheet. Do yourself a favor and drive down to Racine for a delight at Johnson Park.
