Good Fun
First nine holes were very different from the back nine. It was a challenge but fun.
Nice course but awful pace of play issues
Our twosome was stuck behind 4 dawdlers for our last 12 holes. They often drove their carts off the path and parked right next to the green. When they left the green on the last hole one guy drove his cart between the green and the trap at the left front corner of the green. Then one of the guys almost hit me with his cart in the parking lot when he forgot he had left the cart in reverse. We mentioned this in the pro shop. The teen aged girl there shrugged and said they did not have a ranger that day. They did not have a starter either. She seemed to be the sole authority figure on duty that day. These guys took about 4 hours and 20 minutes to play 18 holes and they never had to wait for anyone. We left without playing hole #19. Although it had rained the previous day the course was in good shape. My advice: if you play this course bring a lawn chair and a book to read while waiting to hit your next shot.
Diverse Layout
High Cliff has one of the most diverse layout of holes in the Fox Valley. Dog legs, length, up and down hills, tricky greens - it is all there. The overall quality of the facility isn't high end like a country club, but the prices are reasonable and the staff friendly. Course was in good shape when we played, greens were firm but not as hard as other couses we have played so far this year.
good value for the money
High Cliiff Golf Course runs through a residential development near-side High Cliff State Park. It's a great value for enjoying a public course in a state park setting. No state park fees are required to gain access. It is mostly flat, and can be walked fairly easily. A great escape course outside urban areas.
