The beauty of the natural terrain and the way Jones fit the golf course into it is truly spectacular. Situated alongside the Santa Cruz River, the course meanders into the surrounding hillsides where the sunlight casts mystical purple and yellow shadows in the late afternoon. Holes 5 to 8 are considered one of the finest four hole stretches in the state, ending with the 439 yard No. 8. Teeing off from high on the hill, the fairway drops off twice before your long approach shot settles onto a green framed by a reed filled pond to the right and a gaping bunker to the left.

Nice course layout
Course in great shape. Greens need some work. Nice layout fun to play
Nice course
Fairways good. Greens OK, a few with bare spots, one temporary green. Traps had sand, but not raked. Some fairways narrow. I'll come back.
an older course design that holds up well.
We have played this course several times since Jan. 2014.... conditions have steadily improved. They are working hard to return the course to its former greatness as a Robert Trent Jones Sr. course.
The greens are the worst part of the course but getting better. We are looking forward to returning in winter 2015 to see how things have gone.
NOT WORTH THE DRIVE
Our group arrived 20 minutes prior to our tee time and no carts were available for at least 30 minutes. The course was not in good shape, particularly the greens. . . . many bare spots and very lumpy. Found putting to be quite a challenge. The pace of play was slow but tolerable given the conditions of the course. I would not go back until I hear of a good report. . . . . not worth the time to drive to and from Tucson.
Nice Layout - Too bad!
This course has a very interesting design. Lots of traps, doglegs, water hazards, variation in the terrain, large greens with variable slopes. Too bad it's not in very good condition. It looks like attempts are being made to deal with some of the problems - very patchy greens, poor maintenance in and around the bunkers, hard, thin fairways, etc. - but it has a ways to go to get back to its former glory. Fortunately, the greens fees were reasonable and my playing companions were fun. All in all - a good day.
Lay- out great, greens need help!
It was my first time play at Rio Rico and I actually enjoyed the lay-out and scenery but the greens needed some help. Get those greens in better shape and receive two thumbs up! I will be back. Thanks!
Needs Work
I have played this course many times over the last 15 years and I can say there are some signs of improvement from last year. That being said, I can't think of course I have played that had 18 greens as bad as these. All 18 greens including the temporary on hole #8 are awful. There are a lot of bare spots and where there is grass it is in clumps making the green very bumpy and unpredictable. My partners and I think the greens added 3-4 strokes to our round. I didn't pay much for the round but you get what you pay for.
Course is improving all the time
Course is improving. A few rough spots but overall in much better shape and continuing to improve. This course is a nice change from the desert courses.
awesome features and great views!
We play this course about ten times a year, and it seems to be getting better each time! The new
management team seem to be making an effort
to bring the course back to where it was six years
ago. But it takes time, the people up in Green Valley
will come back in the future.
course
played course several times, conditions fluctuate but good value for money. course is fairly long and has many sand traps.
This is a challenging but fun course
The course is coming along good. Was in rough shape the last couple years but the new owners are doing a great job getting it back into great shape.
Very much worth the time to play the course.
Good Value
Good value for the money. The golf and lunch special for any lunch item was great. Some course work being done but not in bad shape considering green fee.
Chapman Challenge
I like the course, the price is okay, the scenery is great.
The course needs extra work on the greens. This course used to have the finest greens in Southern AZ .
Nice Layout.
I have played this course a number of times over the years and enjoy the layout. Unfortunately the course is in only "fair"condition - at best. I think that they are trying to bring it back but they have a long way to go. If you can get a good price, and you have not played this course before, give it a try. I look forward to the day when the course improves.
While we're young !!!!!
Weather gray, cool, breezy, sprinkles. Played behind elderly foursome who played painfully slow from inappropriate tees. Weather and waiting detracted from our play. However course is fun if a bit rough. Price is right, Golf Now $19.
Rio Rico
The course is in good shape, some greens were under construction due to the javelinas. Very open course, the guys I play with tend to lose a ball a hole, but only ended up losing 2 or 3 each. Worth the drive down from Tucson!
BEST VALUE IN SOUTHERN AZ
There are a few green under repair but overall, the course is in
great shape, and getting better. The staff are courteous and friendly and make you feel like they really appreciate you. This has become my home course. It really is the best value in So AZ.
a shell of it's once glory
a sad course that once was a real pleasure to play
Do not go
I played this course about ten years ago and it was in bad shape then.
A member of our regular group arranged this visit for our foursome as a surprise.
If anything the conditions of the course are worse than ten years ago. The greens are simply awful. Often they looked like the fairway weeds and sparse grass simply was cut shorter, there were greens with great bare patches and were often as hard as the cart paths.
The fairways were also in terrible shape. Even the ball washers were falling apart with scant or no water.
It is cheap but I would not play this course for free.
Too bad for it is a nice layout. It needs a complete make over to be worthy of a visit.
Rio Rico
A lot of fun, fairly easy; and good for the average golfer. A few holes need your attention.
