ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Overview of front 9 Photo submitted by cklep1969 on 07/28/2013
Nice layout, good value. Hope to see some improvements.
Course layout is great. Some greens and fairways need some TLC. Will play it again. Good value for the money.
Needs Work, but there are some benefits
Played for the first time.
The greens were pretty challenging.
The fairways and teeboxes were hard. In general the course suffered from not being watered.
I would prefer to play Jimmy Clay or Kizer since they are closer to my home. If they improved the fairways and tee boxes charged a bit more, I'd be happy to play the course more frequently.
Thanks.
Good course for the money
Enjoyed our round at Colovista GC. The views were fantastic and it felt like we were surrounded by nature. Pretty flat layout on the front with just few memorable holes, but the back nine is great. Got there early for a just past noon tee time. We wanted to hit a few balls to warm up, but they informed us a tournament would starting soon and if got out right then we could stay ahead of the tournament. We did for the most part but got slowed on the back as they had a few groups go off the back which slowed us down. Last few holes drug on as the players were extremely slow. No Marshall in sight but didn't expect one either given the locals on the course. Could have used a cart girl for drinks or something because we got parched on the back waiting to play. 16th hole is shortened due to some course damage I guess as I didn't see any repairs being made so go figure. All in all a goid round of golf in a very fair course.
Want to be Fair
Things are still dormant - so I want to be fair. This course has an incredible layout but the conditions were lacking in a big way. The fairways were hard with bare patches and the cart paths we're awful or non-existent.
With some warm weather, water and TLC this course would be amazing. At present I can't say it's worth what they are charging -45 weekends.
Great shape and fun to play.
Tee boxes and Greens are excellent. We appreciated playing this course after playing other courses in the area.
Almost there, if weren't for a few holes
I always look forward to playing the back nine as they are more challenging and picturesque. A few holes on the front nine need work to bring that part of the course up to par. Start with the second. 10 X 10 yrd wet area on right side of fairway and
drainage ditch that is being overgrown by grass doesn't help. The weeds/overgrown area between hole 4,5 and 6 don't add to the scenery. Hole 7 doesn't have any markers as to where the fairway ends on the left side. Hole 16 and 18 are the only bad holes on the back side. Hole 16 looks like their is a sinkhole in the landing of the fairway. Hole 18 could use some grass in the upper end of the fairway. Greens and Tee boxes were pretty good. Special is pretty good, without the drive from Austin wouldn't be worth it for me...
Review
Enjoyed the day and everything the course and staff had to offer. Course was in good condition for this time of year especially the greens that were very receptive to approach shots and rolled very true and were all about the same speed.
Wished I played better
The course was great, I on the other hand came down to reality. I thought and had the most confidence going to the course. However, after the first tee shot, it went downhill from there. I need to remember to take photos for mental preparation.
Lacking Re-Investment
This course is in a downward spiral as it’s obvious no money is being spent to maintain it. Sprinkler heads are clogged which creates heavy concentrations of moisture around the heads and leaves the rest of the course unwatered. Cart paths are not maintained, don’t even exist in many places, requiring you to guess your way around to the next tee box that in some cases end up being the opposite direction of what your instincts would have you believe because of doubling back. In other places the cart paths are washed out with the dirt completely washed away under the cement and the paths roped off. The 16th hole has a large washed out area crossing the middle half of the fairway. Sorry to say, but the back nine are the only holes I would consider playing again.
Much Improved
We've played here several times this year and the latest round has probably been the best conditions we've played on. The greens were in great shape, the tee boxes were much better (previous time they were a bit wonky and over saturated) and the fairways were maintained. No marshal or beverage cart but not a deal killer. In the past, we've gotten free drinks as a promotion. I hope to go again soon.
ColoVista
While the course conditions were less than ideal it was hard to beat the price. the fairways had large bare patches that could kill a ball in its tracks. the greens were always in good condition however. I would definitely return at the price that was being offered, not sure if I would pay more than $25 to hit of hard clay with a Fairway drive.
Has Fallen Off
This course is either hit or miss. Sometimes conditions are better than average, and sometimes they are BAD. This last round I played there was the latter. Luckily I got a hot deal for $10. It was worth that, but not much more. Greens were "Okay", but fairways and teebox's were terrible. Looked liked the course hadn't been mowed in weeks. Weeds everywhere. Hopefully, it will get better.
Needs some work
I live in Austin and have played Colo Vista a dozen or so times in the last few years. The price point for a round is often good enough to justify a 45-min drive from my house.
The course is usually in fair to good condition but the round yesterday was not either. Fairways were bare in some spots and had large clumps of weeds growing in others. Greens were reasonable but not as good as I remember. And the worst part were the cart paths. Nearly every hole had large potholes with water, and huge ruts making the trip around the course a teeth- rattling adventure.
I gave this a "yes" recommendation only because I think this course has a beautiful layout and some funs holes. But management needs to make some iserious improvements to the course conditions or they will lose golfers like myself, no matter what they charge.
Les Williams
One of the worst conditioned golf courses I have EVER PLAYED!!! The fairways looked like battlegrounds. The cart paths just randomly ended at various points and left you to navigate down dirt roads. We left after 7 holes and vowed to never return. We came to get away from the city (Houston) and enjoy gold in the country. What we didn't bargain on that the "country" was more like a war zone than a golf retreat. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!! THIRTY-SEVEN DOLLARS FOR A HOG RANCH IS NO BARGAIN!
Great Course
Golf now hot dea. Very green for a centra Texas course. Over all in good conditions after heavy rains and flooding. Going back soon.
No-Show Staff
Never played the course. When we arrived there was no activity and only 4 other golfers waiting. The course was not in good condition due to drought but the reason we did not play is that no one was manning the golf shop at 7 am. We left at 7:10.
Colovista
Greens are in excellent condition. Fairways are getting much better. Fun to play.
