ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Overview of front 9 Photo submitted by cklep1969 on 07/28/2013
Typical Texas
Greens slow, needed mowed. Fairways typical Texas pasture grass. You need a seat belt to stay in the cart it was so bumpy. Maybe all the rain had something to do with it.. had a good afternoon. will probably play again. Will only us Golf Now and a good deal though.
great day for a round of golf.
Over allthe course was playable. Back nine much prettier than the front nine. Front nine could use more water and real golf cart paths and not just dirt path.
Lots of brown spots everywhere. The greens fast and excellent inspite of the fact the course was aerating the greens. Would go back but would wait for a lower tee time price. At $40 there is not much value there because I had to drive from Austin to play. At $30 that would be be about right.
Good fun
The course was good. Great views. The greens were fantastic. Fairways had some issues with some patches of weeds and some over watering spots. Some of the bunkers haven't had the weeds cleaned out or been raked in a while. But a lot of fun was had by all.
Colovista was fun on a Wed afternoon
My brother and I found the course in great shape and pretty much had it to ourselves most of the afternoon Wed. The course is BACK!! the #15 hole is worth the price of admission alone.
Hduster,
I'm very glad to hear you had a good time at the course! We've been working very hard since reopening to get the course back into great shape. We have completed a lot of exciting projects and we have several more coming this season to continue to improve the course. We hope to see you again in the near future!
Course needs work
I've played Colovista during it's glory days 2002. The course needs a lot of work. First of all the course is too wet, greens were uncut and slow, but look good. Areas along the fairways and edges have lots of weeds, the grass seems to be uncut during the weekend making rough areas uneven. #16 fairway has suffered damage as a result of erosion caused by the heavy rains and all sand traps need to be reworked. When will the glory days return to this beautiful course? We all miss them. Austin, TX
Thank you for your review of the golf club.
Since reopening, the course has come a long way from what it was on opening day. While you are right in saying we have some weed pressure in some spots in the rough, we are consistently working to eliminate those without causing damage to the good turf. Every single day we are making improvement in that regard.
The damage on #16 is our next big project and should take place over the next two months. During the time we were closed, the drainage alongside that fairway collapsed and led to some of the erosion spots you saw on that hole. The ball is already rolling on that drainage being repaired and the fairway re-sodded.
The greens are being verticut this week and will be speeding up a great deal as well. The crew has really done a phenomenal job in bringing the course back and as each day passes, we get closer and closer to the wonderful course you remember.
Good to be back
I had played Colovista not long after it first opened and it was a fantastic course. I t always saddens me when a good track closes. Fortunately, this course is back in business and will hopefully continue to improve over time. Being just a little over a week since the extreme weather and floods, the course was in good shape with a few areas that were still wet and not mow-able. It did not affect our fun. Greens were in good shape and rolled nicely. Had a lot of fun and will return again the next time I go through Bastrop
Course is coming around
Course was in very good shape after the heavy rainfall in May. Greens still need work, some very patchy with sand spots and weeds but May was a heavy rainfall month. Fun to play with some challenges requiring well placed shots.
Thank you for your review of the course and I'm glad you had a positive experience! May was certainly a difficult month with the rainfall and limited our ability to do some of the applications we were hoping to do as far as fertility and herbicides go. We have been able to get those out this week and we are following up with a nice round of verticutting that will have the greens in great shape! We are excited for how the course conditions continue to improve and we are also excited that we are having our grill room/snack bar as well as a full restaurant opening in the mansion this month!
Well worth the $20!
Colo Vista is one of my favorite courses, it is just challenging enough to make you work but is still friendly enough to have a great time. Our area has recently received flooding weather and within a week, the course has drained enough to play without a problem, kudos to the ground crew!
Thank you for coming out and visiting us! It's amazing how well the course drains after a heavy rain out here. The grounds crew did a fantastic job doing as much as they could to get the course ready for play. Also, I am very excited to let you know that a full scale restaurant will be opening in the mansion during the month of June as well as a grill room/snack bar over here in the pro shop. Next time you come back you will have plenty of food options during and after your round!
Colovista
Would not pay full price for this course. Greens are terrible... No nice way to say it. Lower the blade on the mower!!!
Thank you for your review of the golf course. I apologize that you didn't have a great experience here at the course. In regards to the mowing heights right now, there is a reason they are a bit longer than normal. We have recently put out an application of herbicide to help keep the goose grass out of the greens so the more foliar exposure out there, the more effective the treatment will be. We are also planning on verticutting in the upcoming week, so it is important to make sure the grass is vigorous and healthy going into that process so it can heal quickly. The blade height will be lowered a bit more once that process has been completed and in about a month, the greens will be rolling fast and true and people will be begging us to slow them down! Hopefully you can make it back out and play again as the course really bares its teeth when the greens are rolling fast! Thanks again and we hope there are many pars and birdies to be had this golf season!
okay
course was somewhat wet because of the recent rains, but was still playable. Front 9 is not as fun as the back 9 imo. Very windy and the front 9 was difficult because of it. Back 9 was better but the pace does slow down compared to the front. I like Pine Forest better for the price
Good shape overall, greens still not great
The course overall is in good shape but the greens are a little rough compared to last year. Otherwise always a treat to play
Thanks for your review of the club! I would highly encourage you to make it back out here this month as the greens have really come on fully and are night and day from just a couple of weeks ago. We are also opening a full restaurant in June as well as our grill room/snack bar for food at the turn. We are in great shape right now and would love to have you back out!
Thank you for coming out and seeing the course this season. The greens are still a bit bumpy, but they are finally coming out of their winter dormancy. It was a little late this season due to circumstances with weather and cool temperatures at night, but they are coming in green and lush every day. In about two weeks they'll be back to full strength. The course itself is in fantastic shape and we continue to do more work to improve the course. The bunker renovations came out wonderfully and we are excited to move on to the next project!
Green condition
For the last 3 trips, The green conditions have been poor. They used to be in great condition, when we played there. I realize the course has been down a bit due to multiple years of being closed, but it is difficult to find value with the uncontrolled pace, and poor green condition. It takes quite a while to complete a round, and putting is not the experience that it was last year. Keep working on the course, and it should improve with a little love.
Thank you for your review of the course. We certainly had some issues with the greens coming out of dormancy this season. It took until late May, but when they finally did they came back nicely. If you get a chance, please come back and visit us again and see the difference. The grounds crew has done an amazing job of getting the greens back to a high level and the rest of the course has followed suit. We are also excited to announce the opening of the restaurant "The View at the Mansion" this June so we will have a full service restaurant to enjoy after the round as well as our snack bar/grill room opening soon as well.
Danny,
We have had some unexpected issues with the greens this year. However, they are certainly not going untreated. It has been a slower process than anticipated due to the cool April and low growing temperatures in the soil. In the last two weeks, the greens have made some nice progress in the right direction. Our superintendent believes that with our current and aggressive fertilization and treatment plan, we will have the greens back to the great condition they were in last fall by the end of May. Come back and see us in a couple of weeks and you'll be amazed by the progress on the golf course. Thank you for playing the golf course and we look forward to seeing you again.
Well named
The layout is great. The view of the Colorado river valley is scenic. I think this course is a work in progress and should only improve as the present management deals with the existing problems caused by an obvious lAck of resources by the previous caretakers. This course could be a diamond in the rough.
Thanks for your review of the course! The conditions have really improved since earlier this spring and if you are back in the area, I would encourage you to stop by. The greens are plush and have come in fully as the grounds crew has done a fantastic job improving the conditions of the course. It is definitely worth a return visit. The course is as green as it has ever been in June!
Greens are terrible
This golf course could be great, but a bare bones budget has ruined that chance. Instead of spraying for Poa annua in the winter, they waited until spring and they killed the grass along with the weeds. The greens are brown, terribly slow and rough which is a shame because the views and the layout of the course are great. Other positives are the personnel are friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, poor tee boxes, bugs in the cottages, and no marshal to prohibit a group of 4 with 3 sets of clubs from slowing the pace of play to over 5 hours in the afternoon are other negatives. We had 16 guys playing 36 holes and we unanimously agreed that even though the price was a bargain, we won't be coming back anytime soon.
Thank you for your review of the golf course. I am sorry your experience wasn’t a great one at the club. We actually did spray for the Poa during the winter. We sprayed in January and again in February. We were successful in spraying out the cool season Poa and that isn’t entirely what has caused some of the issues we are having with the greens. The grass is by no means dead out there. Unfortunately, the soil temperatures are unseasonably cold for this time of year and that is having a profound impact on the grass coming out of dormancy. We have also had a substantial lack of sunlight in the region lately. Every day that we get some heat and sun on the greens, they are coming back better and better. We also have a very strong agronomic plan in place that involves multiple rounds of fertilization, aeration, and top dressing to improve the putting surfaces. Our superintendent anticipates that within two to three weeks, we should have the surfaces playing near 100%. The weather has just been very unfavorable this year in combination with some other factors we had including a long and wet winter which are perfect conditions for Poa to exist. We appreciate your comments on the course layout being great. We would love to have your group back in a few weeks time to showcase the course when it is playing at its best and the warmer temperatures have finally come on. Please feel free to call 512.629.4585 if you have any questions. Thank you.
play only the back nine!!
The front nine on this course is mess. Greens are horrible. The back nine is better, but the greens are still below average.
I apologize you had a poor experience at the golf course recently. We have had some issues with the greens this spring due to unseasonably cool and wet temperatures so far in 2015. They still have not fully come out of dormancy. However, they are rapidly improving by the day now that the temperatures are coming up and within two weeks time they will be back to full strength. Please call the golf shop and ask for Ryan at 512.629.4585 X5.
ColoVista
I've been playing ColoVista all throughout the winter and the greens have been extremely fast. They have been a little brown, but that is typical for dormant greens. I will say I played earlier this week and I can already see the greens getting greenier. I cant wait to get back in a week or two when the course is looking likes its usual shape. Highly recommend checking ColoVIsta out. The signature par 3 on the back is breathtaking. I will be back soon!!
Thank you for your review! The course is really coming along nicely this year as the greens come out of dormancy. We are anticipating in the next week or so to have them back at full strength. The course will be in the best shape its been since reopening! We are very excited! Hope to see you again soon!
Needs a lot of work.
Played at ColoVista with a group of friends as it was his birthday for one of them and he chose this course. The drive up to the pro shop is absolutely great as it feels like you are driving up to a prestigious country club or golf resort. Get to #1 and we were waiting for quite sometime as we caught the back end of a tournament that was going on that morning so our pace of play was off the entire round. As for the course itself, the fairways are not terrible as I have played worse but the greens and the tee boxes were something to be less desirable. The greens were extremely fast which is ok if the greens are actually green but these greens were just brown and dead. As for the tee boxes, to me it was like a wild mess with the grass and weeds growing on them. The course has lots of potential and the signature par 3 on the back 9 with the view of the horizon and the Colorado River is breath taking but the course conditions need to improve and be maintained.
Thank you for taking time to write a review of the course. We are very excited for spring to finally be here and the weather that accompanies that. The course is by no means dead. However, with the cold temperatures our warm season Bermuda grass goes dormant. Now that spring has finally arrived, the grass is coming back into season and greening up daily. We have put a round of fertilizer out in conjunction with the warmer weather and in just a few days the greens have completely changed color. We would love to host you again in the coming weeks to showcase the course when spring has fully arrived and the course conditions have followed suit with the weather. Thanks again and we hope you get plenty of chances to get out and swing the clubs this spring!
Good Course
Second time to play it. 1st time, my son and I received a twosome for Christmas from my wife. We showed up and Teed off #1. The front was pretty nice, and had challenge. Greens were VERY fast which we liked. When we left #9, the Starter had allowed a threesome and a foursome to Tee off ahead of us. We waited for 20-25 minutes to Tee off the back. Upon reaching our Tee shots, the green looked like a circus. Realizing it was going to take three to four hours to finish, we picked up and left unhappy. This time, a golf weekend with two regular buddies from Houston, I tried again. We had GolfNow reservations, and still were instructed to Tee off the "Back" to avoid a jam off of #1. So the 2nd time I played, I played it backwards. Played there twice and have yet to play #1 - 18. The course is nice, and the signature hole on the back is truly awesome. If not for the value, I wouldn't be inclined to return for the logistical reason alone. It appears "Members" are allowed to do whatever they want here?? Lots of Singles all day. Pace of play was erratic at best. Worth a try, so I recommend it because it "can" be a nice course if you don't encounter the logistical issues I have.
Thank you for taking the time to write up your review of our golf course. We are thrilled with the way the conditions are improving with the spring finally starting to arrive. We are also excited to finally see the benefits of all of the renovations and projects we did this winter.
I do apologize for your experience on your last visit. We have had some very busy days on the calendar with the good weather coming in and a pretty busy tournament schedule.
Please contact the golf shop and ask for Ryan. I would love to speak to you further on the issue and to ensure your next visit really showcases the fantastic golf course we have here.. The number is 512-429-4585 ext. 5
Well worth the short drive from the city
We played here this past weekend. What a value for the price! There was a tournament going on, so the pace was a little slower than normal, but we were told about it in the golf shop before we took to the course and we weren't in a rush at all. The players in the tournament looked to be having a blast and we will probably play in the next one! While the course was mostly dormant grass, as it is February, it still played great. The greens were lightning quick and challenging. The back 9 layout is also one of the best in the state! My friends and I are so glad to see this place returning to its former glory. We were also told that the carts were brand new and that the bunkers were freshly redone. It didn't take me long to figure that out, as I found the first one on the second hole! The big mansion by the golf shop also appeared to be in the process of renovations. You better get as many rounds in here as you can before the prices go up. This place is too good to not check out. I can't wait to see it in April when the grass is growing again.
course would get a poor rating
considered the course to be in only fair condition. the front nine leave something to be desired. back nine is in ok shape but needs work. the only way that I would go back is to play back nine twice
Thank you for your review of the golf course. We are currently in the process of adjusting our watering schedule and moving a few of the heads around to get better watering coverage on the golf course. I'm glad you liked the greens, as they are rolling GREAT right now. The course is starting to come into its own very nicely and continues to get better by the day. Enjoy the fall season and come see us again!
