ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Overview of front 9 Photo submitted by cklep1969 on 07/28/2013
Mixed Bag
In spite of the friendly staff and the unique layout, I was disappointed in the course. The links style on the front side and forest/hills on the back made the round interesting. The back side had a couple of very interesting holes with changes in elevation. However, most of the fairways, especially on the front side, were ruined by weeds.
Nice greens, rough roughs
Drove down from Austin with a buddy to take advantage of $20 green fee & cart. The greens were surprisingly good, but the fairways need a bit of attention and work. The back nine is in better shape than the front, but the roughs are very rough around most of the course.
Course layout
The course has a little of everything, from being open on the front nine with water to narrow fairways and trees on the back nine. It will test you.

A Tale of 2 Nines
My wife and I are from Houston and played this course using a GolfNow Hot Deal so the price was very good. The day was sunny but there was a 3 club wind on most holes and it had rained hard the previous couple of days. The front 9 was down along the river and was flat and open so the wind killed us there. The tee boxes were uneven, the fairways were very bumpy and hard to tell where they ended and the rough began. Given the amount of rain i was surprised that it wasn't muddy except in a few spots which was a good thing. The greens were uneven but rolled decently.
The back nine was the saving grace. It is through the trees on the hills next to the river. The wind didn't affect us as much. More character to the golf holes. Saw 6 deer running across the green on hole 11 or 12 (don't remember exactly) but they didn't seem to have hurt the green any.
We played the Pine Forest Golf Course the next day and liked it a lot better. When we go to Bastrop to play golf in the future, we plan to play Pine Forest.
Best 2 for 1 golf course around
Pace of play is always good and can't beat getting to play 2 style of golf courses on one course. Front 9 u get link's style course. Then on the back u have to shape the ball around tree's and elevation changes. Plus never can beat the view off part 3 tee 15
ColoVista Golf Club is fun, challenging, unique, and scenic.
This was my first time to play here since I played it several times when it was new. The course is coming along nicely. It was a real pleasure to play here again. The front 9 holes are fairly open and mostly flat, except for a couple of holes that have modest elevation change. I found the back 9 to be the tougher 9. It is largely tree lined with plenty of elevation change and a few sharp doglegs. Oak trees and pine trees frame it nicely. The back 9 places a premium on placement. I found the toughest stretch of holes on the course to be 14 - 16 which include significant elevation changes and two sharp doglegs. I didn't notice any significant impact to the course from the Bastrop fires a few years ago, although you can see the impact for the first couple of miles of the drive to the course from Highway 71. Kudos to the condition of the greens. I managed to get around in 25 putts. Overall, the course is fun, challenging, unique, and scenic. It offers a nice variety of holes and scenic views.
First time playing colovista
My first encounter with colovista was very nice. The greens were nice the course conditions were excellent. Nice carts. and at the end of my round the cart boy came to my car to get the cart overall 10/10 I will be coming back.
This course needs serious maintenance
I booked this course through Golf Now as a "Hot Deal" at $18.00 greens fee including cart. If I had paid any more I would have complained more than I did. The excuse I got when I said something at the turn was "it's winter conditions and under new management", from the pro-shop. The front 9 was terrible and the back 9 was nicer but not kept well at all. The signature hole was a very nice view. I was expecting much more. The snack bar was closed, the grass was cut terribly, the greens were sandy, no over-seeding was done, the clover was so long that it held up play to find the ball, large holes were opened without caution markings, and with so many other courses to choose from this wouldn't be my choice.
Colovista
I really enjoy the course... Needs work here and there, but all and all great bang for your buck! Staff is awesome! The person behind the counter called me to see if a pair of Bluetooth earphones were ours.. they were'nt, but we contacted the gentleman who joined our group. And they were his... the young man at the counter was who called. He was a very polite and concerned for our possible missing property. Never had a a course call me like that. Excellent customer service. Just that right there will keep me coming back. Thanks again Colovista! :) L.J.
Outing
I'd say an overall great experience. I know back in the late 90's when I played on a 5A golf team, the varsity team was always super excited to play here for a tournament. The course needs work on the bunkers and I'd make a few carts paths. Plus make sure the rough is mowed because I lost a sleeve of balls out in it. I'll play Colovista again. I found the new restaurant, the View had an awesome view, great for a date, and top notch on cooking me a grilled chicken sandwich that I took to go.
Very different front and back
Played a Christmas Eve round here. Great course for the price. Front nine and back nine are very different. Front is wide open. You can just let loose with your driver. Back nine gets a little hairy with narrow, doglegged fairways. One of the par 4's on the back was shortened to a par 3 when we played...I think due to storm damage. Green were in nice shape. I'll definitely play here again.
getting there
first time in 8 years playing course, its getting back to where is was before closing. still a nice place to play!
Nice Layout
Needs a little help with concessions and course conditions but overall a good experience.
Good pace of play
The course was still a little wet from recent rains but it did not effect pace of play. The course is fun to play because of the variety of holes it has. Some with elevation drops to winding around hills with tall trees to gently up hill. The greatest disappointment is that the golf personnel just is not friendly. Did ask if we had played before, knew where the driving range was, needed range balls, drinks or anything else. There was no beverage cart or warning that if you want something on the course, take it with you now. I will go back to play again because the course is fun to play. Maybe the staff will have a better day.
Typical Texas
Greens slow, needed mowed. Fairways typical Texas pasture grass. You need a seat belt to stay in the cart it was so bumpy. Maybe all the rain had something to do with it.. had a good afternoon. will probably play again. Will only us Golf Now and a good deal though.
great day for a round of golf.
Over allthe course was playable. Back nine much prettier than the front nine. Front nine could use more water and real golf cart paths and not just dirt path.
Lots of brown spots everywhere. The greens fast and excellent inspite of the fact the course was aerating the greens. Would go back but would wait for a lower tee time price. At $40 there is not much value there because I had to drive from Austin to play. At $30 that would be be about right.
Good fun
The course was good. Great views. The greens were fantastic. Fairways had some issues with some patches of weeds and some over watering spots. Some of the bunkers haven't had the weeds cleaned out or been raked in a while. But a lot of fun was had by all.
Colovista was fun on a Wed afternoon
My brother and I found the course in great shape and pretty much had it to ourselves most of the afternoon Wed. The course is BACK!! the #15 hole is worth the price of admission alone.
Hduster,
I'm very glad to hear you had a good time at the course! We've been working very hard since reopening to get the course back into great shape. We have completed a lot of exciting projects and we have several more coming this season to continue to improve the course. We hope to see you again in the near future!
Course needs work
I've played Colovista during it's glory days 2002. The course needs a lot of work. First of all the course is too wet, greens were uncut and slow, but look good. Areas along the fairways and edges have lots of weeds, the grass seems to be uncut during the weekend making rough areas uneven. #16 fairway has suffered damage as a result of erosion caused by the heavy rains and all sand traps need to be reworked. When will the glory days return to this beautiful course? We all miss them. Austin, TX
Thank you for your review of the golf club.
Since reopening, the course has come a long way from what it was on opening day. While you are right in saying we have some weed pressure in some spots in the rough, we are consistently working to eliminate those without causing damage to the good turf. Every single day we are making improvement in that regard.
The damage on #16 is our next big project and should take place over the next two months. During the time we were closed, the drainage alongside that fairway collapsed and led to some of the erosion spots you saw on that hole. The ball is already rolling on that drainage being repaired and the fairway re-sodded.
The greens are being verticut this week and will be speeding up a great deal as well. The crew has really done a phenomenal job in bringing the course back and as each day passes, we get closer and closer to the wonderful course you remember.

Thank you for your review of the golf course. We are currently in the process of adjusting our watering schedule and moving a few of the heads around to get better watering coverage on the golf course. I'm glad you liked the greens, as they are rolling GREAT right now. The course is starting to come into its own very nicely and continues to get better by the day. Enjoy the fall season and come see us again!
