ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Lacking Re-Investment
This course is in a downward spiral as it’s obvious no money is being spent to maintain it. Sprinkler heads are clogged which creates heavy concentrations of moisture around the heads and leaves the rest of the course unwatered. Cart paths are not maintained, don’t even exist in many places, requiring you to guess your way around to the next tee box that in some cases end up being the opposite direction of what your instincts would have you believe because of doubling back. In other places the cart paths are washed out with the dirt completely washed away under the cement and the paths roped off. The 16th hole has a large washed out area crossing the middle half of the fairway. Sorry to say, but the back nine are the only holes I would consider playing again.
Much Improved
We've played here several times this year and the latest round has probably been the best conditions we've played on. The greens were in great shape, the tee boxes were much better (previous time they were a bit wonky and over saturated) and the fairways were maintained. No marshal or beverage cart but not a deal killer. In the past, we've gotten free drinks as a promotion. I hope to go again soon.
ColoVista
While the course conditions were less than ideal it was hard to beat the price. the fairways had large bare patches that could kill a ball in its tracks. the greens were always in good condition however. I would definitely return at the price that was being offered, not sure if I would pay more than $25 to hit of hard clay with a Fairway drive.
Has Fallen Off
This course is either hit or miss. Sometimes conditions are better than average, and sometimes they are BAD. This last round I played there was the latter. Luckily I got a hot deal for $10. It was worth that, but not much more. Greens were "Okay", but fairways and teebox's were terrible. Looked liked the course hadn't been mowed in weeks. Weeds everywhere. Hopefully, it will get better.
Needs some work
I live in Austin and have played Colo Vista a dozen or so times in the last few years. The price point for a round is often good enough to justify a 45-min drive from my house.
The course is usually in fair to good condition but the round yesterday was not either. Fairways were bare in some spots and had large clumps of weeds growing in others. Greens were reasonable but not as good as I remember. And the worst part were the cart paths. Nearly every hole had large potholes with water, and huge ruts making the trip around the course a teeth- rattling adventure.
I gave this a "yes" recommendation only because I think this course has a beautiful layout and some funs holes. But management needs to make some iserious improvements to the course conditions or they will lose golfers like myself, no matter what they charge.

One of the worst conditioned golf courses I have EVER PLAYED!!! The fairways looked like battlegrounds. The cart paths just randomly ended at various points and left you to navigate down dirt roads. We left after 7 holes and vowed to never return. We came to get away from the city (Houston) and enjoy gold in the country. What we didn't bargain on that the "country" was more like a war zone than a golf retreat. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!! THIRTY-SEVEN DOLLARS FOR A HOG RANCH IS NO BARGAIN!
Great Course
Golf now hot dea. Very green for a centra Texas course. Over all in good conditions after heavy rains and flooding. Going back soon.
No-Show Staff
Never played the course. When we arrived there was no activity and only 4 other golfers waiting. The course was not in good condition due to drought but the reason we did not play is that no one was manning the golf shop at 7 am. We left at 7:10.

Greens are in excellent condition. Fairways are getting much better. Fun to play.
Not like when it opened
Tees and greens were in pretty good shape. The greens rolled fairly quick with very few bumps. "Through the green" however, was another story. Bumps, weeds, dead spots, wet areas, you name it in the fairways. Need back surgery after traveling over this track. Still a better course than pine forest, but for conditions/money, think I'll take pine forest for now.
Great
The course was in good shape for this time of year. Fun to play. Great layout. Will definitly play again. Good value.
Will be back!!
What a pleasant surprise...had seen great deals on Golf Now for a while and decided to give it a try. Middle of the week on a hot summer afternoon pretty much had the place to myself. Front 9 links style wide open, back nine tree lined in among the homes. Fairways do need quite a bit of work-weeds, dry patches, etc but that really didn't bother me--just move the ball to a nice patch! The greens were in nice condition--the collars need some work. Also some beautiful vistas. Pro shop personnel very helpful even encouraging me to go ahead and tee off early to get ahead of a foursome on the way. Like the title said..I will be back!
For any level golfer....
This course is great for any level
Golfer.... the 15th hole is majestic.
At the top of my list of courses especially for the value.
Challenging
ColoVista is always a fun and challenging course to play.
Price is right but fairways need help!
Fairways need attention!!! Grass conditions are average to below average. Very rutted. Greens are in good shape. No coolers, although they sell beverages- adult and otherwise. Still was a nice round.
Thanks for your input. Since your last visit we fertilized and sprayed for weeds in fairways and tee boxes. We have also started an initiative to repair cart paths and the washboard areas in fairways. I hope you visit again.
Hoping for improvements
I used to play this golf course several times per year when the course conditions were far better. Since then, the course was closed and re-opened. I'm so glad it is open again because the layout is very interesting, but it needs serious work, especially in the fairways and teeing grounds. The greens on the back nine resemble the way they used to be - beautiful and rolling smoothly, but the front nine's greens are in poor shape. The fairways have an incredible amount of weeds, far more than I've ever seen on a golf course.
I would guess they need lots of $$$ to maintain the course in the manner it needs, and if we as reviewers deter players from going out there, they certainly will not be able to make many improvements.
This course is owned by members. If they are serious about their course and want people to drive from Austin and surrounding communities to play and help support the course, they should get together and volunteer to make some improvements. A starting point would be to apply weed killer to the fairways.
I paid for a Golf Now 'Hot Deal' of $15, but if I had paid more, I would have asked for my money back.
I really hope they make the much needed improvements.
ColoVista golf course
The greens and the layout were pretty nice. The fairways and t boxes were not good at all.
It was worth a try for the price.

How on earth can u give this a 4 star rating when you state how bad the fairways are??!! Is that not an important part of the course? Ridiculous.
