ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Overview of front 9 Photo submitted by cklep1969 on 07/28/2013
Challenging
ColoVista is always a fun and challenging course to play.
Price is right but fairways need help!
Fairways need attention!!! Grass conditions are average to below average. Very rutted. Greens are in good shape. No coolers, although they sell beverages- adult and otherwise. Still was a nice round.
Hoping for improvements
I used to play this golf course several times per year when the course conditions were far better. Since then, the course was closed and re-opened. I'm so glad it is open again because the layout is very interesting, but it needs serious work, especially in the fairways and teeing grounds. The greens on the back nine resemble the way they used to be - beautiful and rolling smoothly, but the front nine's greens are in poor shape. The fairways have an incredible amount of weeds, far more than I've ever seen on a golf course.
I would guess they need lots of $$$ to maintain the course in the manner it needs, and if we as reviewers deter players from going out there, they certainly will not be able to make many improvements.
This course is owned by members. If they are serious about their course and want people to drive from Austin and surrounding communities to play and help support the course, they should get together and volunteer to make some improvements. A starting point would be to apply weed killer to the fairways.
I paid for a Golf Now 'Hot Deal' of $15, but if I had paid more, I would have asked for my money back.
I really hope they make the much needed improvements.
ColoVista golf course
The greens and the layout were pretty nice. The fairways and t boxes were not good at all.
It was worth a try for the price.
Fun Day
Played in a threesome, and no pressure from behind. Course was in better shape than six weeks ago; greens were better, but still need some growth and repairs on some of them. Always enjoy Colovista. Par on the signature hole #15 made it a fun day. I'll go back to play it again.
Great price for good course
Great deal here. Course needs a bit of TLC, but for the $$$ it is a great deal.
Course is good. Greens are true, but front 9 cart paths rattle your teeth. # 15 par 3 has The Vista. Overall great fun.
Golf course in name only
I am clueless as to the good reviews of this course, the only reason I played it was because I trusted them. The one review that said the back nine was totally different from the front is true but honestly it's so hard to even want to finish the front in order to get to the back and even though it's a better layout it's in the same condition as the front. Every fairway is littered with weeds - it felt more like playing on a country field then an actual golf course. I took pictures hoping to post them but I don't see an option. There's a significant amount of crab grass and weeds around the greens and the greens have a lot of brown spots.
This course is not worth playing at any price.
Tail of two nines
Front nine lacking character, lots of uneven tee boxs and uninteresting holes. Back nine allot better layout. Greens rolling nice overall!
Still Satisfied
The Good:
Course was in great shape. fairways were kept, minimum bare spots, sand in sand traps, clear markings, additional markings through out the fairways which was very helpful and the clubhouse was in good shape.
The Bad:
Some tee boxes were not leveled. There was at least three where I felt that i was teeing off at an angle or slope. I got a sandwich from the pro shop, the ham was still frozen.
The Less than Desirable:
The putting greens were a little long but they were in overall good condition. They could have been better.
The Outcome:
I would still come back and play again. Seems like their selection of trinkets are better, wished I had more time to browse.
Green to T-box
Over all good experience. The course covers a lot of ground, meaning it would be a hike from the greens to the next t-box! Grass Not fully developed but that is a product of our cool nights. Would definitely play again!
Loved the course
It was wet in a few places, but it is not in a building. It is outside and some comments have complained about the wind. Come to the Panhandle of Texas where we play in 20-30mph wind a lot. The greens had recently been sand, but they were fun. I really enjoyed the golf course and my son who lives near there enjoyed it also. The views on the back nine were great. Makes you appreciate what a beautiful and different state we live in.
Nicely designed, fair course condition
The course takes advantage of the hilly terrans in Bastrop. The fairways are only in fair condition. Back nines are harder and more interesting than the front nine. The 15 th hole has a fantastic view of the Colorado river passing through with over 100 feet height. The course is nicely designed but not as good as the Pine forest country club nearby. Worth 20 dollars a round. Would recommend to play once!
Poor conditions, Needs work
Played on a Saturday, when we checked in the guy in pro shop told us to tee off on the back side first. Which kind of through me off because i was ready to play the front because its more open. Anyway the course needs work, the greens are probably the only thing that is good on the course. Fairways and tee boxes need work, i wouldn't recommend this course because being from Austin, there is better courses i could have played for the same price on golfnow and wouldn't have to deal with shotty conditions.
Worth the Trip!
I really enjoyed my round! Staff was extremely friendly and the course was fun to play. Greens are in really good shape; fairways are high and sometimes it is hard to find your ball. The back nine is the more interesting of the two. You will enjoy some wonderful views!
I will go back next time I am visiting Basteop!
Thanks for your input. Since your last visit we fertilized and sprayed for weeds in fairways and tee boxes. We have also started an initiative to repair cart paths and the washboard areas in fairways. I hope you visit again.
