Pine Forest Golf Club

About
Built by Don January in 1979, Pine Forest Golf Club in Bastrop, Texas provides a true golf adventure through sneaky elevation changes and red bluffs, with blind tee shots and holes along the Colorado River. No. 3 is a picturesque par 3, playing 170 yards downhill, with a green framed by the red bluffs. On no. 6, keep the tee shot right to avoid a blind second shot, and watch out for the tough, two-tiered green. The seventh hole plays along the Colorado, and is protected by a massive cottonwood tree on the left. On the back, make note that the highest point on the course is the 11th green. For the home stretch, make the most of the two downhill par 3s. No. 12 plays 180 yards and you'll need to leave it below the hole. The 16th hole is longer at 225 yards and is protected by a beautiful oak tree on the left.

Not in good shape
The course has potential but is in poor shape.
Some fairways are OK, while others have ruts from water flow that carved out channels in the middle of the fairways. Greens are combination of sand and crabgrass overall.
Typically half the green is usable, and that part is bumpy. We just did two putts automatically if they didn't fall, since maybe 3 of 18 greens gave a fair chance of striking a good putt.
What we did like was the price and pace of play, since once we teed off, we saw nobody else playing. And the layout in the forest and by the river is scenic if you disregard course conditions. It does look like some work is being done, and club shop has been updated, so maybe there is hope the conditions will be improved. Basically, as long as you know this is just a course to enjoy smacking the ball and not concerned about scoring, it serves that purpose at a good value.
Improvements and updates for the coarse steadily improving. Club house renovation and fairways, and river’s view great progress. Tee boxes and greens are about 50%.. I really enjoy the layout of the coarse—-. It takes a lot of time and money to maintain a golf coarse—-I can see the improvement.
Really???
How many years ago were these pictures taken ??? this course has NO GRASS!!! it is an incredible layout but unplayable it is a tax writeoff for a california millionaire whose bidness in cal now sucks SO they ruined california and move here ti ruin us how sad
They are Working on It - But Not There Yet
New Owners are putting money into clubhouse and their next phase ate greens then fairways. Course has great bones, but needs lots of work - especially the greens. Hopefully, the new owners will bring this gem back !
Worst course ever.
Would definitely not recommend. The rust at most courses are better than the greens here. When you hit, you have no idea what direction your ball is going after it lands. It looks like there’s grass but it’s just a Mirage.. You can drive and land on the fairway. Your ball will not sit down. It will bounce after landing in what appears to be grass.
Another great day on the course!
Grass is growing on fairways and greens. Wildlife in abundance. Beautiful day and great people in the clubhouse. Go challenge yourself on this course if you have never played it...you will love the layout. I've played it since the 80's when I was learning the game and the course still does not disappoint. It's still "rough" right now, but they are working on it every day to get it back to where it needs to be. Cheap beer too!
Wasted potential.
The layout of this course is nice but the conditions are horrific. Used to be able to justify playing here when it was 30 bucks on the weekend but now they’ve raised their prices without improving the conditions. Fairways are like playing on a minefield. Greens are like playing plinko. Wouldn’t recommend now that they’ve raised the prices.
Great layout for topography. Coarse is being worked on.
Overall rate would be 3 and worth the money for beginner and intermediate player. Greeen’s are 50%.
Putting is a problem on some greens. A few fairways need work. ***
Needs work. Has potential
The course layout is interesting and challenging. However the course needs a lot of work. Maybe next year.
Scenic course, it has potential!
First off the course is in rough condition but for $42 on a Saturday morning, I’d say it’s worth it. Tee boxes and greens were harsh, and it was difficult to find balls even just barely off the fairway. BUT it made up for it with the course views, the varying elevations, course layout, and good challenging holes. I would certainly play here again, and I hope they improve conditions in the coming years!
If you are a scratch golfer, I would probably avoid purely due to course conditions. But for average golfer it’s a fun course.
Poor conditions continue
We carry a piece of fake turf to allow us to actually have something like how a course should have.
Bastrop River Club
Friendly staff that offered us free waters as well as a cooler with ice to keep drinks cold. Main complaint is the terrible condition of greens. They consisted of mainly dirt and were basically just really short mowed field grass. Other than that, really good and challenging holes, and scenic cart paths with wildlife
Course Needs A Lot of Work
The course needs a lot of work, the terrain along the river was beautiful. The course has tons of potential however, currently the tee boxes, fairways, and greens are poor at best. I hope the new owners are able to bring the golf course back to life because the property has tons of potential to be a great golf course.
