ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Overview of front 9 Photo submitted by cklep1969 on 07/28/2013
welcome back
Can't wait until Spring when this course greens up! Ryan and his staff are great!
Nice gem in Bastrop!
Well, it's nice to have this course open again after a four year absence. Finances, drought, etc. can't keep it down. KUDOS to the ColoVista residents and their POA for taking action and saving this course!
For the same reason I like a lot of other courses, I really enjoy playing away from the city life. I like being out amongst the trees and big sky -- and not hearing anything but the wind. As those who are familiar with this course already know, it's basically two separate nines. The front nine is more links style as it's down in a mostly flat valley area closer to the Colorado River. The back nine is a little different -- bringing in some bigger doglegs, elevation changes, and tall trees. Ah variety -- the spice of life.
As for their signature par-3 #15, go ahead and take an extra moment to just look out over the land. Forget about the shot and just have a little breathe in breathe out Zen moment; it's quite a peaceful spot. After tackling this hole with my three playing partners, I'd say take about 20-25 yards off of the distance and hit whatever club matches.
As for the course, I'm not going to knock them on a few of the areas that are still a little overgrown; they're out of play anyway. Over time, I'm sure all areas will be taken care of accordingly -- including a lot of the cart paths. First things first, right!? For being dormant with no maintenance for so long, they've done a really good job of bringing this course back to life. We were very pleasantly surprised with the grasses in the fairway and rough areas. And the greens were in superb shape. They're all on the large side and rolled extremely true. The undulation will get you on a few but that's part of the fun. There are a few that you might want to think twice about and place your approach accordingly based on pin placement; play smart by preparing for the next shot.
I can't wait for spring when the grass and trees are back in full force. That'll really add some additional life into this course. Keep up the good work with the course and we'll continue to keep it in our rotation.
Greens are great
After having been shut down for awhile I was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the course. It was in good shape particularly the greens. A lot of variety to the holes with the front links style and the back in the wooded hills. Don't miss the view on 15.
very enjoyable caorse to play
great course foe all level of golfers. the score card give you a suggestion on what tees to play from based on your handicap. the par 3 15th hole has a outstanding view from the tee box you what to rake a photo of.
Great Views-5 tee locations-Consistent greens(fast)
I play this course as often as I can. All greens are the same. 5 Tee box locations offer easy to moderate to championship. 1st eight are flat and open. Last 10 are treed, hilly and awesome. I am thinking about joining. Free range balls. Good carts. Super friendly staff
new greens
Colo vista is a nice setup that requires you be long and accurate of the tee and shoot demanding iron shots in. Due to rain all the greens have been replaced and the roll like concrete, they are supost to grow roots and become a much higher stimp but at the moment putting was harder the a putt putt course.
Greens in great shape.
Greens were in great shape. Some of the fairways were a little spotty, but overall the course was ok.
The greens were amazingly fast.
Aside from the flooding, the course is in pretty good shape. The greens were amazingly fast. You can clearly see a diference from the old 9 to the new 9. For the money, ColoVista is an amazing course!!
Fun Course
The greens are in great shape. could pay a little more attention to the amount of grass clipping left after mowing fairways. In all GREAT course.
One the best course the price
Very pleased overall staff & course/ excellent/me & my son had a great time
Nice course, nice views
The course had been shut down for quite a while and only recently been opened. It was in almost excellent shape. The bunkers still need quite a bit of work. The greens were nice but ridiculously fast. Driving range was still out of commission. I would most definitely return.
Not as promised
I heard rave reviews about this course for years; however, it did not live up to the hype by a long margin. The front and back nines did have completely different personalties - front almost links-like, and back had lots of trees and water. Not as scenic as promised - only one hole with clear view of Colorado River. Weather was very humid - not the fault of the course - which may have lessened our overall experience. Many other courses in this area i would recommend ahead of this one, mainly b/c it did not live up to expectations.
Very scenic course with a lot of elevation changes. Tee boxes were a little sparse and turf was hard in spots but greens were excellent and huge.
Very scenic course bring your camera to the tee box on hole #15 a par 3 that looks out on the river. Two holes before that a view in the opposite direction showed a clear vista of pristine farm land making you forget that that green needed a wind mill with the flag placed right on the saddle point of a sloping green. Very challenging course that must have been a gem back in its heyday.
challenging course.
This is a great golf course. The greens were a little fast for my taste, however they are in wonderful shape. The fairways are coming along. Overall, Colovista is one of the better golf courses in the Austin, Bastrop area. It has fantastic views and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend this course.
This course has been closed for several years.
I think they are really gaining on the weeds etc after being closed for several years. The staff super friendly. The greens are in good condition. Grass besides the fairways are super thick and sometimes difficult to find errant balls. Not the course's fault.
challenging and fun
This course just newly reopened this year is a fun challenging course. It has many elevated holes and has some tough tee shots, that if not placed correctly make it impossible to reach in two. The greens are in pristine condition and very fast.
Scenic course. Fast greens. Heavy rough.
Found out the course recently re-opened after 3+ years. Played it for the first time. Greens are beautiful and fast, fairways are very good, but the grass was a little long with a few bumpy spots. (I assume in the coming weeks/months they'll be able to cut it back.) The rough is pretty thick which requires some accurate tee shots. Front nine is wide open, back nine plays through trees and a few rolling hills.......and of course the beautiful par 3 15th hole. Given the time the course was closed down, it's in great shape. The only thing I look forward to improving is the condition of some of the fairways. If you're in the Bastrop area, definitely plan a tee time at ColoVista.
Rebirth of a Hidden Jem
I heard about this course from a player who had been involved in it's development. I wanted to play it but knew of the fire and the closing of the course, I read of it's rebirth and was intrigued but it was a long drive. Then I got a great price and decided to see how it looked. Use your map quest because it is hidden away. The pro was extremely informative and friendly and was obviously proud of his course. The cart was almost new and powerful (needed on the back 9). The front 9 was reasonable flat and something of a links layout. The holes were interesting with large undulating greens which were smooth and fast. The greens required precise ball placement or you were looking at 30' putts. The back nine rose up into the hills of Bastrop with a lot of large pine trees and rolling hills. One par three is so steep that that after I hit my 7 iron 175 yards down to the hole I was afraid to follow though thinking I would go over the cliff. Just a little fear of heights but a majestic sight. A couple of holes needed maps which were not available on the card or tee marker. My GPS was not giving me a map so at least one hole was confusing. We played the middle tees so it was not extremely difficult. The back tees would be something else. Overall, the greens were terrific, the fairways decent, the roughs acceptable. There are still some bare spots still and a few evidences of burned trees, but the course is unique and a treat that will only get better. Players need to give it a try and overlook a few minor flaws. If you live in Bastrop you should be all over it.
Beautiful & challenging.
What a gem. First time for me. I'll be back for sure. The 15th alone is worth the price of admission. Definitely worth the 1 hour drive.
great layout with some great views
Course was in good condition considering the hot weather this summer. The greens were very good. This is a great golf course just outside of Austin. If you have not played this course..treat yourself. It was a fun day.
