ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Overview of front 9 Photo submitted by cklep1969 on 07/28/2013
Great fun !!!
Felt like a private course. Played in the afternoon and had the course to ourselves. Very open but fair course. Greens were hard and did not stick but rolled very well. Variety of holes allowed me to use every club in my bag. Great fun and will play again many times. No Marshall on the course and Grill was not open.
Great Course
This is a great hill country course and a great value. We drove 60 miles to play this venue and will do it again. The back nine really gets your attention with some spectacular holes.
Corse management
We had a 10:00 am Tee time and did not get off till after 10:30. Even though we had a tee time it was first come first off no starter. We got stuck behind a really slow fivesome who would not let us play through and no marshall to speed things up. After 4 holes there was an empty hole in front of them
Wonderful Course & Layout - Play this one!!!
If you have not been to this course, it is worth the trip. The front nine is a bit links like, playing on the west side of the property down along the Colorado River. Then you hit the back nine & WOW!!! It is in the pines rolling & twisting above the Colorado & have your camera ready when you get to the tee box at No. 15, you won't be disappointed. Go play this fabulous course, is truly the best in the area. Can't wait to go back.
ColoVista Golf Club
Great course, very fun to play on!
Greens were lightning fast and the guy there said they were running slow. Love the course and it has a great view. I will go back as much as I can.
Needs ALOT of work
Played this course on a getaway day. Front desk staff was very accommodating on the phone and in person. The greens were good and true. They did not hold particularly well after 2 solid days of rain. The fairways were horrible. The front nine was poorly signed for the first time visitor. The course was EMPTY so there was no one to guide the way. Best way to describe the front nine is pasture pool. Course shows it's teeth on the back nine. Fairways were worse than those on the front. Thank God I did not find a bunker all day long otherwise we might have missed our planeBut other than the greens being true to putt, I cannot really say much anything nice about this place. Don't count on any good food. Premade sandwich from a grocery store and they were out of condiments. Will not be back to this track.
Long ways to go
Only good thing about this course are the greens and back 9 views. I know it's only been reopened for a year, but the weeds are out of control and it looks like it's been a week since anything has been mowed. The bunkers that have been redone are growing weeds in them also. I live only a few miles from this course and I'm all about supporting local businesses, but a lot of work is still needed. Lots of bare spots on the fairways.
good course after the renovations
Great sceneries. I liked the course before the course went dormant. I was kind of surprised to see that the course is really not that bad. As a matter of fact, it was somewhat good. I will definitely come back for more rounds.
Next Month
Next month hopefully this course will be in better shape. Combination of a rough winter and lack of maintenance leaves me wondering if it will ever be back to old form. Great layout with beautiful vistas and greens that are rolling great that get you to hoping that it does make a comeback. I'll probably go back middle of spring to play it and see if it has recouped. I'm thinking it might be longer.
Almost Back
You can tell a lot of work has been done to get the course back in playing shape. I never played it before it went dormant, so I don't have the previous condition to compare to. Greens were super slick and brown; didn't hold any ball. With a couple of years of diligent course work, this could be a really neat course. It was really windy the day we played. Driving range is quite a way from the clubhouse. Great views from some of the holes.
Nice hill country course
Played this course as part of a hill country golf trip. The staff informed me that the course had recently reopened after being closed five years. The greens and fairways were new and in excellent shape. The fairway bunkers had not been reworked yet. A good layout with some great views. Elevation changes were a challenge for us flatland Houston golfers. Traffic was light on a very windy day. Will return soon.
Great course
Played in late February .Weather was fantastic.
Can't wait to make the drive in a couple of weeks and play again
excellent course
Friendliness of staff was awesome and the course is great. It is in excellent shape. Thank you.
Great Course
This course is a challenge and I loved playing it. I will be back to play this course again in the spring when the grass is green. Hitter straight and long!!
welcome back
Can't wait until Spring when this course greens up! Ryan and his staff are great!
Nice gem in Bastrop!
Well, it's nice to have this course open again after a four year absence. Finances, drought, etc. can't keep it down. KUDOS to the ColoVista residents and their POA for taking action and saving this course!
For the same reason I like a lot of other courses, I really enjoy playing away from the city life. I like being out amongst the trees and big sky -- and not hearing anything but the wind. As those who are familiar with this course already know, it's basically two separate nines. The front nine is more links style as it's down in a mostly flat valley area closer to the Colorado River. The back nine is a little different -- bringing in some bigger doglegs, elevation changes, and tall trees. Ah variety -- the spice of life.
As for their signature par-3 #15, go ahead and take an extra moment to just look out over the land. Forget about the shot and just have a little breathe in breathe out Zen moment; it's quite a peaceful spot. After tackling this hole with my three playing partners, I'd say take about 20-25 yards off of the distance and hit whatever club matches.
As for the course, I'm not going to knock them on a few of the areas that are still a little overgrown; they're out of play anyway. Over time, I'm sure all areas will be taken care of accordingly -- including a lot of the cart paths. First things first, right!? For being dormant with no maintenance for so long, they've done a really good job of bringing this course back to life. We were very pleasantly surprised with the grasses in the fairway and rough areas. And the greens were in superb shape. They're all on the large side and rolled extremely true. The undulation will get you on a few but that's part of the fun. There are a few that you might want to think twice about and place your approach accordingly based on pin placement; play smart by preparing for the next shot.
I can't wait for spring when the grass and trees are back in full force. That'll really add some additional life into this course. Keep up the good work with the course and we'll continue to keep it in our rotation.
Greens are great
After having been shut down for awhile I was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the course. It was in good shape particularly the greens. A lot of variety to the holes with the front links style and the back in the wooded hills. Don't miss the view on 15.
very enjoyable caorse to play
great course foe all level of golfers. the score card give you a suggestion on what tees to play from based on your handicap. the par 3 15th hole has a outstanding view from the tee box you what to rake a photo of.
Great Views-5 tee locations-Consistent greens(fast)
I play this course as often as I can. All greens are the same. 5 Tee box locations offer easy to moderate to championship. 1st eight are flat and open. Last 10 are treed, hilly and awesome. I am thinking about joining. Free range balls. Good carts. Super friendly staff
