ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Overview of front 9 Photo submitted by cklep1969 on 07/28/2013
Probalby won't be back
I'm played this course a handful of times now and I'm always disappointed.
The people there are nice and the pace of play is always pretty good (because there aren't that many people playing this course), but I simply can't play a course that is in such bad condition every time I play it.
I mentioned this to the staff the first time I played there 4 years ago. They told me work was being done to improve the conditions. It's been four years. I've made the hour drive out to play this course six or seven of times in those years, and not much has improved.
The course is patchy and bare. The bunkers fill with water. The greens are shaggy. So are the fairways.
I could go on.
Staff friendliness and a good pace of play can't make up for a poorly kept golf course.
The only reason I went to Colovista this time is my son is taking up the game and I didn't want to play a course where his play would hold up a lot of other prople behind us.
I very likely will not be back unless the price drops to under $25 (which is still probalby more than this course deserves), or I talk to at least 5 people who tell me the conditions are dramatically improved.
It's just not worth the drive.
Not The Best
I hope this golf course is being rebuilt. Tricky greens, hills, and water show potential but the bunkers don’t drain, no food, no cart person, and no water was provided on the course. Also, parts of the courses are both overly firm or nice consistency on the fairway. The greens can be both fast with large hills or extremely slow with a hill at the cup. It is very patchy on the greens and fairways. Not having water to drink on the course was brutal and the worst part outside of the inconsistency.
There was a giant plantation house that is right smack in entrance when you get to the course. We were guessing that’s not the restaurant since there’s no signs just a giant mansion. The clubhouse was a small shack to the left of that we did not see the kitchen.
Outside of being hungry and dehydrated the course was still somewhat fun.
Beautiful course!
I really enjoyed this course. The fairways were rough, a lot of bald spots, but the greens were beautiful and fast. Tee boxes were great. Never had any issues placing tees, etc. Friendly staff. The course had some unique features which made it fun. Some water, some sand traps, but not too many. I’m a pretty new golfer & I felt like this course was challenging, but not so much so that it frustrated me into never wanting to play it. I had a lot of fun & played a decent game.
Needs Work
Right off the bat on Hole 1, great tee shot, middle of the fairway… but my ball ended up in a patch of damaged swath of ground that spread over most of the fairway.
More of the same type of damage was found on most of the course - including fairway landing spots and even the greens. . Greens May have been damaged by a fungus or something - it was like putting in a bumpy sand trap at times.
the conditions improved somewhat on the back nine.
Front 9 was pretty wide open with very few trees and some ponds as water hazards.
Back 9 has lots of trees and some fun holes with dog legs and tight tee shots.
Mixed review
First time playing Colovista and mixed review. Front nine is pretty open but back nine is fun layout with some elevation changes and lots of fun. Fairways were bare in some spots and bunkers were bad throughout. About 2/3 of the greens are ok and the other 1/3 have quite a few bare spots. Overall enjoyed it and will be back.
Do not come here!
The last time I had played this course was in my freshman year of high-school, and I remember it being beautiful. I was wanting to swap it up and decided to drive out the 1 hour and twenty minutes to get there and was appalled with what I saw. The course looks as if it’s been used for a dirt rally competition, and as if they are trying to make the fairways complete mud. Absolutely not worth $50 let alone $5!!
Disappointing
Has the potential to be a nice course with some interesting hole layouts. Greens have a lot of break and are fun to play. But for the most part the course was in terrible shape, specifically the fairways.
Getting there
Greens were softer and ran more true than they have in the past. Fairways were being worked on but at least they’re doing something unlike other courses close by. Hopefully in the next 4-5 months they have the place a little more cleaned up but progress is being made and I enjoyed my day.
Colo vista
Greens are ok.
Cary paths are garbage.
Fairways are hit or miss.
30-40 dollar course
First Time visitor
We are from Houston and for our first time here at this course, we had a blast. The difficulty above our normal course it was a good challenge for us. The staff was friendly and we will be planning another trip down to Bastrop to give this course another Wack.
Rough shape
The fairways had many areas where grass was non existent or grass was unmowed in areas.,even lost my ball in one fairway The greens had not recovered well from aerating. Tee boxes had little to no information about the hole and one tee box had been moved very far forward as the fairway was under repair but no sign addressing this and golfers were left to find this out on their own. One restroom on backside of course was out of order. This course does not reflect the title of country club very well.
Still Needs Work
This course has a lot of promise. I heard it was making a comeback. It is still certainly in the early part of the comeback phase. Half of the greens still have patches that won’t grow grass. All of the fairways are terrible. Bare rock and gravel in the middle of some fairways.
Too overpriced. Needs about 2 years of work to be charging the $50 they are for a weekend morning. Hope it’s able to get to that point but for now steer clear.
Colovista round
When we got to the course, they were working on the course so only the front nine was opened for play. They are still working to bring the course back to good shape from the 5 years it was shutdown and the hard freeze last year. No snack bar at this time during the week but the staff was excellent. Even comped up 9 holes since we couldn’t play the back nine. Overall was great time considering their struggles. Would definitely go back even if we didn’t have partial free golf.
