ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Overview of front 9 Photo submitted by cklep1969 on 07/28/2013
Brutal
Hate to kick a course when it’s down, but the only things decent were the layout and greens. Tee boxes and fairways were really bad. One guy in the clubhouse was nice. The other ones couldn’t care less we were there. Even $35 was too much to drive all the way out there.
So much potential
Played this course in its prime, which was very nice and many moons ago. Current conditions are a long way off from back in the day. The greens are coming together, they were good and fast, the rest of the course is in repair and in need.
What a dump
I was overcharged to play a so called golf course. This was one of the worst golf courses I have ever played. The layout was ok. It has potential but has been neglected. The pace was awful and never saw a Marshall or anyone of authority out to check on pace. The fairways were so sparse in some places a goat would have starved. The greens looked good but putted terribly. They were bumpy and you could putt the same putt three times and it would do three different things. Won’t be back and I will let my golf buddies know to avoid this overpriced goat track.
Lacking
The first visual impression of the club is awesome! Then….. not so much. 1) when I checked in, the guy didn’t ask if I needed range balls or even say where the range was then when I find it it turns out the balls are back at the clubhouse which is 1/4 mile away. Argh!!
The desk guy didn’t mention the greens were sanded and offered no discount because of it. Argh!!!
The course has so much potential but was in pretty poor shape overall
I may give it second chance in the Spring
Don’t waste your money right now(Feb 2022) it’s not worth the $40 I paid.
ColoVista after rain
The course had over 3” of rain the evening before we played in the morning. This course does not drain well. Several bunkers were little ponds. The fairways did not drain well. The course lays out well and greens are smooth and fast. We will come back again in the summer
Greens nice. Tee to green, not so much.
We’ve played this course several times over the years. The front nine condition is one notch above terrible from tees until greens. The back nine appears to have gotten the most attention since new management took over a couple years ago. The greens are the most improved and show the obvious concentration of starting the maintenance on there as they are rolling true and fast. There is hardly a playable bunker on any hole of the course, fairways, especially on the front nine are almost nonexistent and hard as rocks. A lot of work still remains to get this neat layout back to a value of $35-45 green fees.
Greens Great, Fairways Okay
Love going to ColoVista. Greens were rolling good. Always a fun challenge.
Great greens
Course needs a little help, maintenance wise. But you could see that they are trying. Greens were very good, quick with plenty of undulation.
Layout was good, with a lot of character. Unbelievably for this day, it was hot. Which , I guess, it better than the alternative.
Bad weather
We weren't able to play. Rained all day on the 27th of November.
Bad weather
We weren't able to play because it rained all day on the 27th of November. Because it was a hot deal I lost my money. So I am a little bit angry about that.
Not what it once was
The course.sits on a beautiful spot. The layout is really nice, but challenging. Unfortunately, the course was in bad shape. Very little maintenance… fairways were a mixture of weeds and grasses, some knee high. The sprinklers flood parts of the fairway and leave other areas bone dry. Bunkers were not playable. The good news, the price was nice, and we played a quick round ..
Awesome place
If you’re coming to the bastrop area to play golf for a reasonable price this is where you want to be.
So disappointing!
I played this course about 5 years ago and loved it, but today I found the course in poor condition. The fairways were brown with mud in some spots and hard dry dirt in others. The greens were in bad condition as well. And to cap it all off it was 95° and humid and no water was present on the course. When I asked the pro shop if there would be water on the back nine , the answer was "we stopped doing water on the course with covid.". But in my opinion if you're open now there should be water on the course when it's 100° outside! Or at least have the decency to let players know before they leave for the first tee.
Overall not bad
I’ve played this course several times in the past. This is the first time I’ve been back since it re-opened. Overall it was better than I anticipated. The greens were in pretty good shape. The fairways were a little rough in spots. Pretty good value for $30.
