Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.

The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.

The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.

The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.

After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.

Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Worst course I’ve even been on

Booked a Tuesday round and got worried when I read the reviews. Let me be very clear this course is absolutely in terrible conditions. First tee box was a complete mud pit. Then you get into the fairways that have dead patches and it looks like it hasn’t been watered in years. Greens are absolute concrete, went Into the clubhouse to ask for a refund and the attendant proceeded to challenge me to play him in golf for asking for a refund. Do not waste your time or money. This course shouldn’t even be on here

Course Condition was terrible

The course conditions were terrible. standing water and mud from irrigation. bare patches in fairways. Newly laid sod on one fairway. Poor job, just laid sod on top of old and left a 3" height differently. Look like a patchwork quilt.

Bare spots on some tee boxes. Greens are the only good thing. By the time you reach the green your already frustrated by the poor conditions to get there. I won't be back.

Great course for the value

Great course with some cool views. Pine forest golf club makes this place look like Augusta. Front nine is mostly flat with no trees. The back nine is really cool with a lot of elevation changes. Also much more trees on the back nine which gives it a different feel from the front nine. Greens were in good shape too. Overall I would definitely play here again and wishing I could have played the back nine twice.

Back 9 in much better shape than front 9

The morning we arrived, there was a tournament starting on the front 9 so we were directed to the back 9. With the exception of minor fairway repairs, the holes were in good shape and the pace of play was not an issue. Playing was enjoyable with a surprise view on a par 3. As we made the turn to the front 9, it was like playing a totally different course. Playing the front 9 was difficult. If I go back, I would ask to play the back 9 twice.

Challenging and Fun Course

We had 20 guys on an overnight 36 hole outing. Onsite cottages are great. Our package included wonderful ribeye dinner grilled onsite. Course layout is challenging. Greens are in good condition. Rest of course is in fair condition, with plenty of rough spots. Great bang for the buck, and the staff is very accommodating and friendly.

Struggling Course

I also played this course prior to Covid; so, I don't believe the level of disrepair is solely due to the pandemic. While the course layout is nice, most of the holes had obvious signs of neglect. Not worth the $50 I paid in my opinion. Staff was great, though.

Nice layout... working to upgrade fairways

Longtime fan of Colovista... 2 totally different 9s

Front 9 is flat but challenging; back 9 is fun and beautifully wooded and more challenging with several doglegs and fabulous signature par 3 15th hole overlooking the Colorado river!!

The greens have improved significantly over the summer due a lot of hard work, maintenance and a little rain! We enjoyed our game!
