Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.

The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.

The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.

The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.

After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.

Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Beautiful course

The course was maintained very well and putting greens were very nice. Cart paths are not in the greatest shape and the course is currently going under some some renovations. But, I will definitely play this course again.

This course is in very poor condition.

I'm not sure what is going on at this course but it is in very poor condition. It is washed out, rough, bare and in total disrepair. We had a cart but a lot of the holes were roped off so you couldn't access the fairways. The cart paths were horrible. I can't believe I paid $30 to play here. I'm not usually a complainer but this really stunk. Glad the weather was good. The staff was friendly enough. Hope they get the kinks worked out because it could be really nice.

Patchy fairway, great greens

They are doing work on the sod, and the fairways really lack definition, but the greens are beautiful. They were doing work on those too, but they are still above average. Fun layout, half links style, half rolling hills/East Texas pine forest.

Course needs a responsible owner

I won't go into the details but when you lose golf balls in the fairway because the grass is so deep, it's in bad shape.

Course needs alot of work.

If your not going to maintain a course, sell it to someone who wants to rebuild a course.

I cannot recommend this course in this shape.

Run of the mill

The greens were decent, but that was the only thing decent about it. Staff was nice, unfortunately the rest of the course was in such terrible shape.

Poor Fairways

Playing here was like playing in my back yard. Overgrown even in the fairways and greens were extremely slow due to growth and sanding.

Maintenance failure

This course has potential yet the grass and weeds in the bunkers and barren greens will keep me away.

Not Worth the Money

This place has a lot of nerve charging $30+ per person. Maybe it had rained a lot more than we thought the day before, but there was not a dry spot on the course. Literal puddles all over the place, so clearly there is a drainage problem. The grass was also pretty thin, with the exception of the greens. Half of those had sand all over the place, they were extremely slow, and you could barely distinguish the green from the other grass. The course layout was alright, with some interesting holes on the back. The course has potential to be fun, but with the poor condition, it's not worth money to play, in my opinion. The only other positive is it wasn't very crowded and we played in 3 hours. Huge disappointment.

Not currently a gem in Bastrop.

I last reviewed this course six (6) years ago. At that time, it'd just reopened after being closed for four (4) years. I wrote about various conditions needing attention and my altruistic hope that it would all come together. Unfortunately, it hasn't.

As with the majority of my reviews, I'll talk a little about everything -- tee to green so to speak. And as much as I want every golf course to be successful, I have to be honest in my reviews.

It's always seemed a little funny/sad to drive up towards this southern looking mansion of a building/home/clubhouse ... only to park and walk over to this little side building. It's at that point to realize the big building is likely void of just about any activity. The true clubhouse is small, has a few things if you need them (balls, drinks, etc), but it generally lacking in personality (for lack of a better word). I generally notice a little bit of everything. Upon walking up to the clubhouse I noticed the landscaping (or lack of it) along with the rubber door mats lying around twisted and out of place. To me, it says no one cares enough to make the place presentable. And that, subsequently, carries over to the actual course to be played.

Tee Boxes -- They were quite average, nothing great but also no real complaints.

Cart Paths -- The cart paths are a mix of concrete, dirt, non-existent, etc. I understand there's a cost to putting down concrete but the fairways simply take that much more of a beating when you don't direct the carts around a hole. And because you don't see it every day, I took a picture of the path on #16. It was washed out years ago by flooding (I believe). And so it sits. Appropriate.

Fairways -- We've had some really nice fall weather albeit a little dry. Still, the fairways here were quite consistent with lots of dirt patches. Not areas with dead grass present ... just sandy dirt.

Bunkers & Water Hazards -- Yup, the water is wet; I found it once. Some of the bunkers had good sand, but others were way too compact (aka dirt). They were otherwise well cared for and raked.

Greens -- Oh, the greens. This is where you can really lose a stroke or six during a round of golf. The greens had likely been sanded in the week or two prior. Okay, that's perfectly normal. But the amount of dead spots (large dead spots) mirrored the look of many fairways. And no one should be putting through such obstacles. It really affected our play ... and our enjoyment of the round.

I was surprised to see USB ports in the carts. I didn't need them but like having them available. It's to the point I might actually start carrying a spare charging cable in my bag. One might the ability to charge if using an app or GPS to get yardage since I don't recall seeing any markings other than 150-yard poles. Hard to have lines spray painted on non-existent cart paths. And I don't recall seeing any sprinkler heads. But I was using an app all day and never bothered to look for any.

It's still a very quiet and peaceful course. It just needs a lot of love, money, and maintenance. It may work as one of a couple options for Bastrop locals, but at this time I can't recommend that anyone drive any distance to get there. Past that, maybe Buttross will buy it and sink a bunch of money into it.

The staff is very friendly. The course was in great shape, even with upgrades and renovations underway.

The overnight accommodations were clean, and the air conditioning was cold,. It was a great time overall.
