ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Overview of front 9 Photo submitted by cklep1969 on 07/28/2013
Needs Work on front nine
The front nine is just a step up from a pasture. Bunkers in disarray, greens with damage/sand. The back nine was much better and more enjoyable. I would play the back again, but will wait for any improvements to the front.
Great place to play golf in Central Texas
We always have a great time at colovista. front 9 is a wide open links style course and the back 9 has all kinds of terrain changes including their signature hole #15 - with a 150 ft elevation change to the green. Great views of the Colorado river and lots of pine trees. People are friendly and they manage to keep the greens in great shape even with the hot Texas sun.
Great Course at reasonable prices
Fun hill country course in a beautiful setting. Staff was very helpful and friendly.
ColoVista Course Review
ColoVista has every golf shot a golfer would want. It demands all facets of your game with the elevation changes and dog legs. Greens were rolling true as gold and very soft to fly into. Bunkers were maintained and playable. Fairways have plenty of green grass with a few bare spots here and there but one can tell that they are working hard to get the course back into Mint condition. We will be back with a big group at the end of the month and looking forward to seeing the continued comeback ColoVista is making. I would recommend this course to anybody as it is a beautiful layout.
Good value on improving course
$40 for a Sunday morning is a good deal around Austin. The course has always had a good layout. Conditions continue to improve. The greens rolled very well and had a good speed. The fairways had a few isolated bare spots, but nothing drastic. The newly sodded areas on 16 and 17 continue to grow in. Worth the drive from Austin to play a fun layout at a good cost.
Fairways Rough
Overall the course was good. A lot of the fairways had dirt patches but played around the dirt patches. Tee boxes were hard to get a tee in without it breaking. The greens had some areas that were damaged, maybe the heat got to them? Overall for the price it was a good day.
Cart Path?
Great course layout. Greens need a lot of help and for some reason they forgot to overlay the cart paths with asphalt. With some good money invested this could be a great place.
Needs TLC
Fairway and carthpath needs some TLC.
Greens are surprisingly decent.
Golf in the Heat
Greens are absolutely great...roll so true. They are a bit hard as we played mid afternoon in record breaking heat. Fairways and tee boxes need rain. Cart paths are pretty non existent. All that said....loved the course and so excited for Colovista’s rebirth. Looking forward to spring time 2021 after we get some rain and fairways get right!
Possibly self-boosting reviews?
I’m not sure who is giving these reviews or where they usually play, but there’s no shot this is a 3+ star course. Cart paths were nowhere to be seen, fairways had huge dirt spots which were essentially concrete, greens weren’t in that great of shape, half the fairways were blocked off by rope so you couldn’t even access them, it was just a mess. The front nine was so bad I legitimately wanted to leave after about hole 7. However, I figured since I paid $40 for the twilight round & a small bag of balls (which is ridiculous in itself), I might as well stay.
The back nine is the sole reason I gave this course 2 stars, because there were actually some nice holes on that half. Hole 15 has one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever gotten the chance to play. The guy in the pro shop was extremely nice & helpful as well.
It seems like they’re either in the middle of a huge reconstruction of the front nine, or they just don’t really care about it. I would not recommend playing here until the course is fixed (or only play the back nine), which who knows will even happen.
Good Time
There are a lot of really bad reviews on this course. But i saw a couple recent reviews that said the course was looking much better. This is True. there are rough spots here and there, and the cart paths are a joke, but most tee boxes were good, the grass is good in most places, and the greens are fine.
There is a Par 3 on the back 9, that looks down and out over a stunning vista with the Colorado river in the distance, hence the name ColoVista. beautiful hole. There is no better scenic hole in all of the Austin area.
We will be back
Nice Layout
I read some reviews about the course and had mixed feelings prior to play but once i started it was a nice course. I got my money worth for the course. The fairways need some rain but the greens where good. Sand traps actually had sand and the back 9 had some amazing views. Hole 15 had an amazing from the tee box. 160 yards 3 par of a 50ft high cliff. Im still trying to catch my breathe.
Mid Field Course
Fun golf course, enjoyed my round. Fairways were a little rough as well as not much on the cart paths. Beautiful views!
Making a nice comeback
Greens are almost fully restored and are very playable. Fairways are green and nicely mowed but there are bare spots here and there, small weed patches, etc... nothing major or surprising for Texas in July. Rough is very healthy and there are distinguishable differences in playing a ball in the rough vs fairway. The cart path issues are still unresolved but you can still get around the course with some basic sense of direction. All in all, it is nice to see Colovista is making a comeback. The layout of the course was never the issue, only the conditions were. As always, pace of play here is never an issue. To me, that and the fair green fees make the drive out to Bastrop worth it.
Colovista with the Rebound
Great to see Colovista start to rebound and head in the direction of the Colovista of old. Greens....great shape! Fairways continue to rebound but the progress and investments being made are a great sight to see
