View from the back tees on 15 Photo submitted by alawyer on 10/02/2012
You must play the fairways, a ball in the rough = a lost ball.
Very special challenging course with the special rule that a ball in the rough is a lateral water drop. Certainly not for beginners. The many ravines make the course difficult to play. The rainwood surrounding is really very special.
The combination golfcourse and church/conference center is very special.
the best course on the windward side of Oahu
one of the most challenging course on the island, offset by with some of the most spectacular views of the koolau mountains. well worth playing over and over again.
to maximize your score, you should know the distances of your clubs. this is not a place to rip it and play where it lands. you are better off laying up before the hazards.
the restaurant, honey's, is a great place to eat.
The views are incredible from tee box to green on every hole.
It was cart path only the day I played because of heavy rain the previous day. Even with the rains the course seemed to drain pretty well and was in great shape. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant next to the por shop is good and reasonable.
**Play the 16th from the black tees regardless of what tees you play the rest of the way. Spectacular view!
Too difficult for average player
Very interesting layout but too difficult for the average golfer looking for a pleasurable round. Too many forced carries over hazards. Very narrow landing areas. In many cases I was forced to hit a short club off the tee to avoid a ravine only to be faced with a very long approach shot to a protected green. No. 18 nearly impossible to reach in regulation. Conditions in fairway were spotty often had rough dirt patches. Greens had been recently punched. On a good note, the staff was very friendly and very accommodating.
Finest golf in the jungle
What a view! What a location! It is a challenging course (lost 6 balls -2 on first hole). However, it is very playable for 10 handicappers. Less crowded as hackers stay away....
Great location
I have coming to this course for the last 15 years. Unfortunately, I have seen a steady decline. There is weed everywhere. Hitting onto the fairway does not guarantee a good lie because of weed and bare spots. It needs some TLC people and people who are willing to put some money back. What a shame. The view is still beautiful.
Mahalo Ko'olau!
Well worth the cost. Late morning, midweek and you feel like you have the course to yourself. Great views, each hole is better than the last. Can't wait to play again.
Very difficult but, great fun. Too hard to play every day
I've played it once 3 years in a row so I keep going back for more punishment. Feels like you're playing in an enchanted forest.
Challenging and worth a visit
Course sits right at the base of the Ko'oula mountains with some truly spectacular views.
Given it's position at the base of the mountains on the north side of the island this does mean the course sits in a near rainforest like environment. Even on 'sunny' days a brief shower is not out of the question. This also means that course conditions (particularly on the back nine) tend to be on the damp side but this isn't really a big deal... just a bit of extra effort required to keep the clubs clean.
Course conditions overall were good. Greens were a bit rough in spots although nothing too bad. I think most of this is due to the wet tropical atmosphere around the course relative to the somewhat dryer conditions required for hard and super smooth greens.
Course itself is extremely challenging, especially from the back tees. A number of the par 5s require very carefully placed and executed shots. Similarly several par 4s require carefully positioned tee shots to avoid awkward angles across deep ravines.
Course staff were all extremely friendly and welcoming. Will certainly return.
Challenging and Beautiful Golf Experience
This course sits in a virtual rain forest with breath-taking peaks all around and jungle along every fairway. It is challenging, with many shots having to cross thickly vegetated ravines. The 18th hole is the most difficult par 4 that I have ever played. The staff was exceptionally friendly and the course was not too busy either time I played it. It was definietly easier to play the second time when I knew where I was going. Bring a good number of golf balls as any errant shot will wind up in the jungle and will not be found (by you at least).
toughest course on Oahu. Great design, A must play.
greens need to be worked on significantly. bumpy and slow. Only part of the course that really needs attention.
Friendliest Staff at a Golf Course - EVER!
This is a fantastic course, but bring LOTS of extra golf balls. The thing that made it the best was the staff. From the club house, to the tee box, to the starter, and even the half-way house lady, they could not have been nicer or more accommodating. I played this course twice while on vacation, and the second time it rained heavily. I checked to see if I could get a rain-check for 9 even though I was on a pre-paid GolfNow.com tee time, but they were more than willing to help me out. I showed up the next afternoon without a tee time, and they got me right out on the back 9 - no problem. The greens are a little rough, but other than that, the course is fantastic!! The view of the Ko'olau mountains is spectacular!! I highly recommend this place if you can hit fairly straight most of the time.
A must-play course on Oahu
My adult daughter and I had a super afternoon with no rain and only a light breeze. We came with extra balls, as recommended, and sacrificed three or four apiece to some impossible carries across gorges, but other holes were generously short, so we felt we had conquered the course by both breaking 100! Almost every hole offers a stunning photo op, and it was a perfect way to spend our afternoon. We were able to take the cart onto all but the last few fairways, which are up the hillside and always wet, but that wasn't a problem. The greens were smooth and the fairways mostly wide and generous. Both the pro shop manager and the starter were super friendly. The starter even took time to give us hints, chat, and take a picture of us.
Ko olau one unique gem; bring a camera! and your A game
If you want to experience a course that will grab your attention, this is it. You are litteraly at the bottom of the mountain ranges that seperates Honolulu and Kailua (on Kailua side). Being there you will see God's magnificient creation of the earth. When you reach the 15th go up to the black tees and you will see Kaneohe bay from there since your there you might as well tee off from there (a birdie hole). Staff was great Gary from Boston was very helpful. The wind doesn't blow much but it will rain once in a while but will only last 20 seconds! Then the sun will shine for the most part. The fairways and tees are still in good shape; however, some greens need attention. But still a good course if a discount is offered.
Great course... sloppy wet during winter months
Can't beat the awesome views of the Ko'olau mountains. The course is very challenging but scorable if you don't push it. You can easily lose between 5-8 balls in the thick rough. COURSE CAN VERY MUDDY DURING WINTER MONTHS.
Must Play if you are on Oahu
This is easily the most visually stunning course I have played. The green mountains, the drives from hole-to-hole through rain-forest, the forced carries over the lush Hawaiian jungle--all together, a can't-miss experience. The wild boars running across the fairway was interesting. Bring at least the number of golf balls that equals your handicap. Off the fairway is dead most times.
Not for high handicappers.
Tough course. Golf was fine but views and wildlife were better. Saw a wild pig!
Tough course, but worth it.
Course plays really tough, but there's a good selection of tees to play from. Maybe not the best for beginners, you'll need to hit accurate tee shots to stay alive on this course.
Target Golf
Course is very demanding and if you don't control your game better bring lots of balls with you.
Great challenge
Fun course bring lots of balls! Nice but very muddy as it is in a rainforest
