A “must play” course, but leave your pencil at home
Unbelievably beautiful course through the jungles of Oahu. Well worth playing. BUT as hard of a course as you will ever play and in bad condition. So play it for the experience and don’t fret over your score. Bring a bag of old balls and hit away. Even when you hit well, you may not find your ball. Green are in bad shape and covered with stuff from the trees. All in all, well worth the experience.
Overpriced
As a tourist you pay a lot more than what they call they’re local fee. The day I played no one was playing. So pace I play was good. But the back nine was tore up on several fairways by wild hogs. The guy I played with that day told me the courses in Oahu are hurting financially because they are over charging for tourist. Makes sense, this course was not worth the price. But it was cheaper than most and it does have great views.
Spectacular!!
We lucked out totally. Weather was perfect other than a little mist on 2 holes. Booked a hot deals time. There was a single who played in front of us and we never saw him again after the 3rd hole. Nobody behind us ALL ROUND! Had the course to ourselves and the maintenance crew. Took our time taking absolutely gorgeous pictures. Course is tough if you don't hit the fairway but I actually expected worse after reading reviews from years ago. Apparently new management has cleared lot of the difficulty away now and is still working on it. I would love to play it again now that I know where to put the ball. Views are breathtaking. Must play if you're on Oahu and the weather is ok. It does get a lot of rain there apparently. Check with the pro shop.
Awesome views
Great pace, awesome views. Tough rough, and if you want to score well lay up.
wowza
We weren't sure what to expect, but what a fantastic course. Actually it's quite fair if you knew where to hit the ball. We're going to play it again this trip and hopefully I will score better I only lost 4 balls. I'd recommend this course to 12 handicap or better it's just phenomenal and his views are breathtaking keep it in the stairway because they have some kind of weird grass that grows in the rough and it makes it almost impossible to hit a good shot because the ball sits down so low
This course is awesome
Great course. Recently a large investment in cleaning up the course has paid off. Course is much better and drier. Highly recommended!!
May The Force Be With You
Challenging course if your not hitting it very well!
Bring your Imagination and a couple extra balls.
Staff is very accommodating and they offer an Industry's Rate! Eat after in the Clubhouse. Bleu Burger is Da "Bomb"!
Extremely challenging but fun.
Every hole would be a signature hole at average courses.Conditions were fair. Greens needed help.Full fee would have been too much to pay considering the conditions. It was worth what I paid.
Wow, this course looks brand-new!
This course has significantly improved from months past. They have removed the overgrown trees and cleaned up the greens and fairways. You end up losing less balls, while still being challenged.
The range has also been replenished, with multiple scenarios to test.
To gain a 5 star, I would like to see all the bunkers filled with sand (although many are being refilled) and reinstall the markers in the range.
Otherwise, you should see the course of you haven't seen it recently. They have spent a tremendous amount cleaning up the course.
Endemic of the decline in golf rounds
One of the best layouts reminiscent of the Prince Course in Kauai (closed now). The bunkers were bare, the greens were uneven and the fairways are slowly being taken over by crabgrass. It's a real shame, because if course conditions were better, it would be a top ten course for me. Every hole requires thought and you will use every club in your bag. You could tell that they sunk a lot of money into this place during its heyday. Now it's barely hanging on. Sad to see such a great design not given the respect it's due, but business is business.
Breathtaking
Still one of the toughest ,spectacular views.ravines not much water holes imagine if they did have them greens in great shape, fairways fair, some bunkers needs work which the course management was working on,bring at least two dozen balls you will need them.bring a camera sites are unreal.see it play it to find out a must play club.
Jurassic Park Golf
Beautiful course! The views are worth the price alone. Bring extra liquids(and extra balls).
Course Conditions
I loved the layout and the beautiful scenery all around the Course . However, crabgrass is starting to take over the fairways, green and rough. They really need to get this under control quickly, or it will only be crabgrass, instead of grass.
This course will test every aspect of your game!
Staff at the course were very friendly and made us feel very welcomed!
Carlton at the pro shop when we check in was warm and welcoming! It made our day that much better and our experience in the golf course pleasant.
Will definitely come back and highly recommend.

Disappointing
I grew up in Hawaii, and played this golf course back in the day, when the course was in great shape, and very playable. I moved to Arizona, and recently went home for a visit, and the course is in dismal condition. all of the imported grasses have succumbed to the local broad leaf crab grass, there is little left of the greens, many of them having large areas of just rolled dirt, the sand traps are non-existent, most are full of weeds, the course is ill managed, it has been purchased by a church group, so my guess would be that the course 'operates' as a stipulation of the land use, the building is clearly being used primarily for church functions. Koolau, its neighbor, Royal Hawaiian, and the Links at Kuilima, where my 3 favorite courses, needless to say, Koolau, is in such disarray, that I will never return, the course has been let go beyond any real repair that would take less than millions of dollars. very unfortunate, because the layout is a great challenge when the course was playable, now it is just tee shots that plug, and tee boxes that are uneven, and long approach shots into greens that are not puttable. If you want to play golf on the windward side, go to Royal Hawaiian, or for 35 bucks play pali municipal, right next store to koolau, its a great value
hawaii vacation
Course was very challenging but was playable. Greens were not real good as far as being smooth but had a lot of slope on most. They were in the process of removing a lot of the trees and brush from the areas between the holes and that detracted from the beauty of the course.
Jungle Views
Negatives: terrible conditions, uneven tee boxes, fairway bare spots with some weird looking jungle grass that was painful to hit out of, and the greens were the worst I'd ever seen on any course.
Positive: absolutely stunning views as u look up at the mountain above, you can see the clouds touching the mountain and that is beautiful. Pace of play was quick and I really enjoyed the challenge of this course. Staff were pleasant.
My home course has a slope rating of 136 and I believe this course is a 156. That translates into a number of uneven lies and just a tough course. Unless you are an advanced golfer or one who understands target golf, then you will probably lose a number of balls. Some of the fairways are so narrow that the bounce after the carry can send your ball into the jungle. Also, there are a few holes that require a pretty long carry to clear ravines. In other words, this is not a beginner's course.
I would recommend you try this course because how often do you get to drive a golf cart around a jungle?
Work in progress
They're spending a great deal of money removing trees which will open up the course nicely. That said, they should first invest in the greens. I can forgive poor tee boxes and even pretty iffy fairways but to have greens that are pathetic at best is not acceptable. There wasn't a true roll the entire 18 holes among our foursome anything outside 4 feet. The staff was kind and accommodating. The layout was very challenging and when they get the greens figure it out it will be a must play.
Aloha and thank you for your feedback! We are doing massive renovations to restore the course as you observed. The jungle encroached on the course so badly that we were on the verge of losing the greens due to lack of sunlight and airflow. The 1st step to restoring the greens was to clear the surrounding trees. Since the removal of the trees, the greens that were nearly lost have recovered about 90% and we expect full recovery soon. Thank you again and please let me know if you are back this way to see us when the restoration is completed.
Best of Oahu Package
Maui Golf Around Package
Exactly right. Your comments are so true. Took me half hour just to get the mud off my ankles, shoes and clubs. Toughest course in the world because you lose your ball in the middle of the fairway.
