Exceeds the Hype

There aren't enough superlatives to describe Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, KS. There is a reason this course is rated so high in the national publications.

Originally a 9 hole layout built by Perry Maxwell in 1937. His son Press later added an additional 9 holes based on Perry's plans. The original 9 holes and new 9 holes blend seamlessly into one of the best routings I've ever played.

The green complexes are really challenging, with several false fronts, as well as large slopes and several smaller, more subtle slopes. While the greens are large, they are challenging to hit, and once the green is missed, the short game challenges begin.

There is ample room to play, but badly missed shots are severely punished by the gunch! Gunch is native prairie grasses and plants. It is very difficult to play from, if you're lucky enough to find your ball.

I was fortunate enough to play 4 rounds, and I was ready to go back out for a 5th round! Each hole is memorable and endlessly interesting. One could play Prairie Dunes every day for the rest of their life and never get bored.

All of the holes are amazing, but my favorite is the par 4 eighth. This long par 4 is a dogleg right, uphill to a well protected green. Gunch guards the left and right sides of the fairway. The fairway has traditional "Maxwell Rolls" which results in uneven lies. Personally, I think 8 is almost a perfect golf hole.

I can't recommend Prairie Dunes Country Club highly enough. If you are ever afforded the opportunity to play it, you have to take it! It's that good.

Challenging track w/ best set of greens I've played

This course is worthy of it's top 20 ranking - the greens and routing are fantastic. It was more challenging than I was expecting - the "gunch", long hay grass off the fairway, basically acted as an automatic penalty. No reason to go in and look for your ball. I wish they would mow this down a bit more - would speed up play and make the course a bit more fair. But other than that, it was unreal - great conditions, staff, etc

Great course

Awesome course layout. Not super long, but you must control your shots. Greens are very fast, fair, fun. Enjoy the peaceful rolling sand dunes with great views.

Prairie Dunes lives up to the hype

This is a course that has long been on my bucket list, and it certainly didn't disappoint. And that comes playing it on perhaps the hottest day of the year (103 degrees). What's remarkable is that we still saw people walking this course, which is a testament to how walkable it is. We, however, opted to ride, and it was still difficult getting through the round in the heat. What wasn't lost, however, was how terrific the original Perry Maxwell design and subsequent renovation by Coore-Crenshaw is. Every hole is memorable, with multiple options. The fairways are firm, and the holes are beautiful. This is a course that's pretty much right in front of you, though you have to pay attention to the greens. Finding the right portion is critical to scoring and avoiding three putts. I also love the overall vibe of the club, the history and how laid back the atmosphere is. Although it’s a country club (there's a pool and tennis courts), golf is clearly the focus. And it's great golf at that.

A challenging beauty with manicured surfaces

I played Prairie Dunes from roughly 6,800 yards in the middle of summer and boy, did the ball fly and roll a long way! The greens were also dry and firm so that added to the fun and challenge of the course. Coming from Florida where the conditions were soggy everywhere, the change in pace made the experience memorable since it forced me to play a different kind of game. Instead of carrying approach shots all the way to the pins as usual, I had to think about how much roll each shot would get. In many ways it reminded me of desert golf. I would definitely play here again.
