Pine Forest Golf Club
About
Built by Don January in 1979, Pine Forest Golf Club in Bastrop, Texas provides a true golf adventure through sneaky elevation changes and red bluffs, with blind tee shots and holes along the Colorado River. No. 3 is a picturesque par 3, playing 170 yards downhill, with a green framed by the red bluffs. On no. 6, keep the tee shot right to avoid a blind second shot, and watch out for the tough, two-tiered green. The seventh hole plays along the Colorado, and is protected by a massive cottonwood tree on the left. On the back, make note that the highest point on the course is the 11th green. For the home stretch, make the most of the two downhill par 3s. No. 12 plays 180 yards and you'll need to leave it below the hole. The 16th hole is longer at 225 yards and is protected by a beautiful oak tree on the left.

Rust Bucket
I’m sure this course was nice when it opened 50 years ago. But zero upkeep has taken its tole.
Tees boxes a joke uneven, some no grass others hard as a rock or a mud pit
Greens more Like a home for critters, mowers right side 1/2” higher than left and who does a checkered pattern on a green
Sand traps a joke.
A beautiful views that’s about it
Bad shape
This course has such potential with the piece of land that it’s on. Unfortunately it is very poorly taken care of especially the fairways and parts of the green. The owner should really do something about these conditions. For the time being I place this course in the 10 dollar price range and not a dollar more.
Unbelievably BAD
Read the reviews, everyone is right, this place is absolutely horrible !!! They should refund my money ! It all starts with Miss Personality in the pro shop, one of those that looks at you, with that look that means, thanks for making me get off my cell phone looks !!!
The course is in HORRIBLE condition, greens are pretty much a joke, along with the crab/st. Augustine fairways. Riding this course will shake you worse than ANY amusement park Roller coaster you’ve EVER been on !! Hold on tight ! No sand in the traps, Very little grass on the greens...... they should be embarrassed to take people’s money to play this course. Stay Away.... Far Far Away !
Bottom of the barrel lately
No water in any of the jugs along the course that should be maintained regularly on a 100 degree plus day. The young guys that were cleaning the carts were cussing while in conversation not caring that we were finishing up the front 9. The clubhouse didn’t have any food like they normally do. It was way over priced for the quality of the course. There was not enough staff to run the pro shop and the kitchen area. Carts are old and worn down. I will look elsewhere before I come back. This place used to be a nice place for a round of golf.
Course is terrible
This course is in the worst shape I’ve ever seen. The lady at the counter does not want to be there. Do not go play this course.
Needs help
Greens and fairway need TLC a few of holes are broke so flag leans to the side on several holes. Worth the $20 on a hot deal but not a dollar more.
Fun Times at Pine Forest
One of my all time favoritisms as far as layouts of a course. Challenging yet scorable. Always a wonderful staff. Pleasant and friendly. Greens run slow but roll well. Heat has taken its toll on some tee boxes and fairways. Overall love the course and great value for your money
Nice course
Lots of dramatic terrain. Greens were unusually slow. Fairways need mowing. Hard to distinguish between the rough and fairways. Some tee boxes were so dry and hard you need to hammer your tee into the ground. Overall still a beautiful challenging little course.
Big disappointment
This used to be a special hidden gem track, probably the best golf value in Texas. NO MORE. No maintenance is being done, greens were horrendous, fairways and tee boxes were worse. There is no way it is worth $20 a round much less $42 per person that my wife and I paid. It is so sad to see such a great track be mistreated. Someone needs to save this place. I wish I had the money, I hope the new owner decides to invest.
The sand traps are just rocks and pebbles, weeds grass burrs and crab grass aRe everywhere. To top it off they are not mowing making it impossible to putt....
Don’t waste your time or money until they get it right....
Sadly disappointed by the condition of one of my all time favorite Tracks
This was such a huge disappointment we are in our 35 Th anniversary trip and played some wonderful tracks a lot Barton Creek. We were supposed to end the trip with a found at Landa Park but it closed due to COVID exposure. So I decided to grab a tee time at what I had considered the best hidden jewel in Texas, Pine Forest Golf Club in Bastrop. What a waste of our time, our money and of a wonderful track. I had not been there in several years while we lived over seas. I really cannot believe how bad it has slipped. The cart paths are terrible, traps are filled with pebbles and rocks greens were not mowed and have crab grass and bare spots galore. The fairways and tee boxes were horrendous. I hope the new owner plans to spend some money to revitalize.
Tee boxes were in terrible shape, along with the fairways. My main problem was that the greens were very fuzzy and didn’t roll well. Layout of course is confusing as well. Lastly, the course shouldn’t be in the $40s to play... it’s not worth the money.
Curious and scenic bargain in Bastrop
I'd always been intrigued by this course considering its along the Colorado River. I finally decided to make the trip. It's good to see it's been busy because I'd seen an article a year or so ago about the owner saying business was tough.
It is a very scenic and unique layout, certainly penal in areas, and the elevated par 3s are especially memorable. The greens are pretty small for the most part and rolled okay. There are certainly a few bizarre holes and the terrain is rugged. Be careful in your golf cart as there are some serious dips and drops. No chance walking this course.
The conditions had their rough spots but all-in-all I can't complain, especially for a $25 round on a weekend twilight. Hopefully the tee sheet stays busy throughout the year and they can polish the place up a little bit. It has a lot of potential and there is certainly nothing like it closer to Austin. Some golfer posted a guerilla ad for infowars on one of the tee signs. C'mon dude.
Fun Course Nice Views
First time playing this course.
First, the good. Great value for the money. Some beautiful scenery along the Colorado River. Some nice contour to the course with some really pretty elevated par threes. Most of the greens were in good condition and had some nice twists and turns, making them fun but fair. The staff was friendly and helpful. The cart paths take you through some beautiful wooded hills, and I even saw a doe along the way.
Now, the “not quite as good” part.
The cart paths need a lot of work, and aren’t marked as well as they need to be. It may be that there have been markers before, and for whatever reason, they are gone now. None the less, it can be confusing. That confusion, of course would go away on subsequent visits. Also they’ve lost spots in the fairway. Looks like maybe water runoff damage.
Overall, I enjoyed the day and will play it again. I’ve played nice courses, but I do recommend this course.
