Pine Forest Golf Club
About
Built by Don January in 1979, Pine Forest Golf Club in Bastrop, Texas provides a true golf adventure through sneaky elevation changes and red bluffs, with blind tee shots and holes along the Colorado River. No. 3 is a picturesque par 3, playing 170 yards downhill, with a green framed by the red bluffs. On no. 6, keep the tee shot right to avoid a blind second shot, and watch out for the tough, two-tiered green. The seventh hole plays along the Colorado, and is protected by a massive cottonwood tree on the left. On the back, make note that the highest point on the course is the 11th green. For the home stretch, make the most of the two downhill par 3s. No. 12 plays 180 yards and you'll need to leave it below the hole. The 16th hole is longer at 225 yards and is protected by a beautiful oak tree on the left.

Summer Fun
We teed off at high noon. The course has been in better condition but the layout makes it still worth the trip. The speed of play was excellent and I would still consider it a value for the money.
Potential
It has the potential to be a nice course, fairways and greens need TLC
Great Layout. Fin
Course is not in good shape. But it's cheap enouh not to mind too much
Course in bad ahaoe
I was shocked by how much the course has gone down since the last time I played it. Many of the tee boxes has no grass on them, some of the fairways were just dirt, and the greens were very slow
Greens in bad shape
The greens were in bad shape as were the tee boxes.
Great Round
With most courses closed due the covid 19, Pine Forest remains open for play and we couldn't be more thankful for that. Rain the night before drenched the course but it was still very playable and in decent shape. The staff was very accommodating given the circumstances and we had a great time as always.
A big thank you to Pine Forest for everything you are doing to allow us to continue to play! We'll be back soon!
First Impressions Usually Right
Last time I played here the course was pretty ragged but it was for a special event almost 20 years ago.
Nothing has changed.
The lot was almost empty when I got there, and given a lot of courses are closed that should’ve been a heads up nothing has changed.
I walk into the shop and the lady in there is not who you want as the face of your brand.
Occasionally you see someone and it doesn’t go well and you think “oh it must be me”, but then my buddy came in and I wanted to take our business elsewhere.
The golf course....is being neglected by these new owners. And it’s really sad because years ago the greens were super grainy but the course was well kept.
It’s awful. Like, hey, if they’d just punched the greens, okay, that happens seasonally. It sucks but it’s the business.
But this place is so poorly maintained I wished I’d gone in for a refund and left except I drove 31 miles to get there.
The rough is just fescue & weeds and clover...good luck finding your ball. And the greens are small and grainier than before though there were a few ok.
If the greens were just grainy or the fairways were a bit long or the rough unkept I get that.
But when you add it all up and top it off with that canker sore working in the shop it’s the worst kind of golf experience. I’m so sorry to have to be so hard on the place but if you read my other reviews I’m always looking for the best in everyone.
Terrible.
Lots of beautiful holes
Course has a beautiful layout with all kinds of unusual holes Hills and fantastic views. The course itself is not in real good shape. Although now that it’s spraying the grass has been growing very nicely and they cut the fairways today and that made the course much more pliable. If anybody wants a beautiful challenging golf course and that’s been very much money and that expect perfect conditions this course is good for you
They say they have a new greens keeper and will be back to great shape by spring.
Decent layout, terrible conditions
I won’t lie, there are some fun holes on this course, but that’s the only positive. Unfriendly, non communicative staff. Crappy range balls, zero signs on the course, we got lost 3-4 times because no signs between some holes. The greens, tees, fairways were all in such terrible shape. Pay the extra few bucks and stay in Austin and play ANY course in town and you’ll be glad you saved the gas to this dump. Sorry, but what a waste.
All around bust
I played as a single and was told to tee off behind 2 foursomes and in front of another foursome. 12 holes took 3.5 hours, then I left. No course marshal around. Horrible scheduling from staff.
Pine Forest ... The overlooked Gem
I played PF recently, I consider the play at PF to be kind of like a "golf Vacation" You will certainly be impressed by the fantastic layout that utilizes the natural cliffs, hills and swales to the best advantage. There are holes like ...
#3, and 150 yard blast over a canyon onto a large green tilted like a backstop.
# 6 a wacky dogleg that uses a large pick cliff to negotiate around to hit a hit tucked into cliff-nest.
# 11 The only hole like it in the entire world... I like to take people there who have never played and watch their reaction, when driving up and up to the tee perched high on a cliff, only to look out and see the shot to come... hit over a canyon to a landing fairway 220+ yards out that is HIGHER that where the tee box is!!! I have heard a many a Holy-S__t comment on that tee. Yet the hole can be par'd with some half decent shots.
#12 down the next cliff to a 170 yard par 3.
#16 a par 3 big-drop shot also, at 200 yard is no easy deal.
Many of the other holes are interesting, but not freakish. Honestly, there is not a boring hole out of the 18. They have Gas carts, needed to make the climbs up tot he various tees.
Now to the conditions. There is lots of erosion, bare spots on fairways, especially on the back nine that is more remote than the front nine. But given the previous description, I can understand how it is nearly impossible to maintain best fairway condition on that terrain. So I discount all people complaining about the fairways. Would take literally 1 million dollars to repair all fairways, and the course just doesn't generate that kind of cash. The greens when I was there were very healthy, quite green and lush ... too lush, for they all were 8 days overdue for a mowing... really bad actually, like putting on the back of a cat. That said, it could just be winter seeding and careful mowing schedule to keep up the health of the green... however other courses don't make you put up with that, so I am not sure why PF doesn't mow a little more often.
The tee boxes , many are bad, but some appear to be under some repair... new grasses sprouting... I think they need more tee boxes to spread out the damage.. fix one while using another, like every other course on the planet.
Still, I like the chance to play here due to the fantastic layout, low prices. I play the muni's a lot on Austin, so any substandard conditions I find at PF do not annoy me as much as it would a valet-parking-golfer.
Good layout
Although I got rained out after 10 this course has a good layout but I would have to say it is in bad shape, hardly playable they need lots of money to make this thing into a gem.
One of our favorite Courses
I know the conditions of this course are not up to some's standards. My buddy and I "don't" play it flat so that mitigates somewhat the less than ideal fairways. We like the layout and the pace of play so much, that we keep coming back to Pine Forest even though there are courses in the area that are in better shape. I would rather play a 3 hour round at PF for $20 bucks on a great layout with beautiful views than a 5 hour round at nearby courses for $50 bucks on a course admittedly in better shape. The greens are in much better shape than the last time we played the course but don't expect them to be perfect. The staff is always very friendly they really seem to appreciate their customers. I almost hate writing this review as this hidden gem on weekdays is almost like having your own private course.
