ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Overview of front 9 Photo submitted by cklep1969 on 07/28/2013
Don't do it!
Really really really bad. Not worth spending a dime here. Go to literally any other course anywhere. Worst conditions i've ever seen. For real - go to pine forest or lockhart state park, this place should be paying you to play.
Rough
Couldn't tell where the fairway starts/ended. Greens where surprisingly good considering the rest of the course.
Trash course
The entire front line of the course was under construction and had Sandee Fairways, but some of the greens were actually decent.
We were not informed that the Fairways were under construction and hardly playable
The last six or seven holes of the course or in decent shape had nice elevation and was actually enjoyable
Should’ve been half of what we paid given almost the entire thing was under renovation
Thank you for playing ColoVista during our 2024 Restoration. We are sorry that you did not have a better experience and welcome all constructive criticism. With that being said we do not feel your comments are accurate. First, to describe our greens as “decent” when we continually get comments that they are some of the best public course greens in central Texas seems inaccurate. Second, we agree that our fairways are not perfect but describe the corse as hardly playable when 95% of the course has good grass coverage, is simply inaccurate as well. Keep in mind that we are at about 50% coverage on March 1, 2024. Further, we are pushing forward with the restoration and grass coverage is getting better everyday. The fairways are not “under construction”, this comment is simply inaccurate. It also should be noted that outside of each holes designed play area, it very well may be hard to play from as we are letting Mother Nature takes it course in all native areas and some those do get very sandy when we have stretches of 100 days with no rain.
Course conditions
The course layout is great. They have done a great job on the greens but fairways are still in rough shape. Many holes are cart only while they try and get grass to grow. I hope it turns around. I'll try again in 6 months.
Walk to your Shot
The layout is beautiful, the pace of play was excellent and the greens were great.
Evidently they are trying to grow the fairways as they were all roped off(with intermittent paths) so it was basically “no-carts” in the fairways.
I’ll be back but the gentleman who checked us in mentioned that in the future, he recommended going to the website or calling them directly to book a teetime. If they don’t want to advertise on GolfPass, they don’t have to but it was embarrassing for me as I hosted the round for 4-players 2-weeks in advance
Thank you for playing and reviewing ColoVista during the 2024 Restoration. You are correct that we are growing in the fairways and we have made significant progress in the last 5 months. With regards to the comments at check in, we will address that issue with the staff and make sure that it doesn’t happen again.
Fairways are in terrible shape
Disappointing conditions to say the least. Borderline unplayable and cart path only to boot. Greens are passable but everything else terrible. Will not play again.

Great course design
I played this course in February, May, and again in July. Every time was a noticeable improvement in the conditions of the course. They have been renovating since winter and it sure does show it especially when you compare before and after pictures side by side. Cart path can be rough in areas and finding drinking water is a lost cause so bring your own or stock up at clubhouse. Greens are some of if not the best in Central Texas. Fairways were well manicured and satisfying to hit off of. Some areas are still coming together but all in all I was impressed with how much this course has progressed. Definitely recommend giving this course a try.
Thank you for playing and reviewing our course during our 2024 Restoration. We agree with you on the lack drinking water issue and wanted to let you know that adding drinking water stations has been added to our list of items to complete over the coming months.
Possibilities
Colovist is fun, but leaves something to be desired. The greens were some of the best in central texas, but the fairways and other qualfies were lacking. The biggest challenge was lack of water on the course, there were no water jugs or beverage cart. The only way to get water on a hot Texas day was to be prepared, or got to pro shop at the turn.
Much needed TLC
So I played this course back when it was new and was a fantastic course. Now to today. Font nine fairways are in really bad shape. Back nine fairways much better but still. Long way to go. The greens were all really nice and for what they charged on a weekend wasn’t a bad deal plus got a hotdog and drink of your choice. Hopefully they will get this course back to how it use to be. But I have played much worse . Not nearly as bad as some reviews that have been posted and pace of play was great . If you’re in the area play a round .

Too wet still, wait until it drys out and they mow
Thank you for playing ColoVista as our 2024 Restoration work continues. We did get a lot of rain last week that kept the mowers from running, but we have been able to start mowing again and everything will mowed in short order.
Check out our FB page for updated photos of the 2024 restoration.
Do not play here
Front night fairways were horrendous. Back nine was just ok. Greens were good. I wouldn’t play here again. There’s no reason for the fairways to be so bad. Hit a straight drive? Good luck finding your ball
Thank you for playing ColoVista. To answer your comment on rhe fairways, during the summer of 2023 issues with our water supply reduced irrigation to roughly 30% of our regular capacity. This combined with the severe heat and drought of 2023 caused significant issues throughout the course. During this past winter we resolved the water supply issues and began restoring the course in March 1, 2024. We began this process having to sod/sprig/seed in nearly every hole. Certain holes needed additional water and growing time which prevented mowing at low heights until recently. As of today every hole is being cut at 1/2” fairway height except No 8 which will need another few weeks to grow in. Please visit our FB page for up to date photos of the 2024 Restoration.
Thank you for playing ColoVista during our 2024 Restoration. We are sorry that you did not have a better experience and welcome all constructive criticism. With that being said we do not feel all your comments are accurate. First, we agree our greens are great and we continually get comments that they are some of the best public course greens in central Texas. Thank you for the positive review on the greens. Second, we agree that our fairways are not perfect but to describe it as “couldn’t tell where fairways start/ended” is simply not accurate when 95% of the course has good grass coverage and we mow the fairways at .6” with the rough at 1.75”. It also should be noted that outside of each holes designed play area, it very well may be hard to play from as we are letting Mother Nature takes it course in all native areas and some those do get very sandy. Finally, we are constantly resodding/seeding the remaining trouble areas so the course is getting better everyday.
