ColoVista Golf Club
About
Located in the Lost Pines area of Bastrop 30 minutes east of Austin, ColoVista Golf Club is a dramatic, immaculate course that’s consistently rated one of the best in Texas. Some actually question whether it is in Texas, given the unusual terrain that the course flows through.
The highlight of the course is the now-famous 191-yard No. 15, which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River and has been called the prettiest par 3 in Texas. From a cliffside tee, the hole drops over 120 feet down to a green surrounded by bunkers and swales. Because of the wind, the best play is a hard punch shot that at least has the chance to lessen the impact of the breeze.
The front nine is more of a links-style track that definitely contrasts with what you’ll see on the back. The opener is a tough, 468-yard par 4 that plays downhill.
The back nine, considered the better of the two, makes the most of the rugged terrain and extreme elevation changes. The view from the bluff is spectacular; giant pine trees line the fairways, and the 90-degree doglegs all add to the character of the nine.
After being closed for around two years, the course has had a comprehensive renovation that includes re-definition of tee areas and fairways; bunker restoration; re-grassing for improved playing surfaces; and new tee markers, signage and pin flags.
Getting there : From Austin, take Hwy. 71 east to McAllister Rd.. Turn right and follow the signs to the course, which is located 4 miles east of the river in Bastrop.

Overview of front 9 Photo submitted by cklep1969 on 07/28/2013
Great course
Great course the back nine is beautiful. They’re working on the front nine and it shows that they’re trying to improve it. Me and my buddy had a great time out there. Recommend this course.
Nice course
Course played very nice. Conditions of the course were good for early spring. Greens will get better in time. Some tee boxes were a little tight and hard ground.
Overall a good experience on this course, I’ll play it again.
Nice Back Nine, Bad Front Nine
Simple as the caption. The back 9 was enjoyable and impressive. The front nine was very rough. Lots and lots of sand. Felt like two completely different courses. Shop guy was nice and friendly, things were relatively cheap in there. No real food options though.
Needs work
Greens were aerated and made putting more difficult. Many holes were cart only due to water or wet fairways .
Oof
Just an all around bad golf course. Not sure where the dues are going but they aren’t going to maintaining the course whatsoever. Greens were awful. Fairways were atrocious. Cartpaths were undriveable at many points. Save your money. I would be happy if I never played here again. Members are not welcoming either. “Pro shop” is used generously.
Used to be nice
Feels like they've let the course go. Appears to have potential but plays like a $45 muni.
Slow, many fairways under repair, Tee boxes not level or patchy and greens in awful shape. Lots of just shaved grass with tufts of the root structure so don't expect a true roll or even a predictable line. it's too bad. Lots of potential but looks like ownership has run out of money and it's on the downward spiral of getting worse if they don't improve basic course maintenance and operations. Hardly any cart paths, mostly a mulch way for you to follow sporadically. Personally, I will play elsewhere next time.
Disappointing
I understand it used to be a nice course. But no longer. Plays like a $45 muni in all regards. Fairways under repair all over the place, and greens are splotchy with tufts of grass so very unpredictable and inconsistent roll.
Practice range really far from the 1st Tee and club house so plan extra time if you want to warm before a round..
Course needs a bit of "TLC".
All in all a disappointment - especially before as far out as it is from the city and airport.
Great Layout, Course is in better shape.
This is my second time playing the course, last time was a few weeks ago, I got A Hot Deal for a morning teetime and couldn't pass it up. I arrived an hour early to warm up, they have a driving range and nice putting green to warm up with. They staff was friendly and I was able to get out a little early which was great. The course is recovering from the winter and what appears to be mismanagement or neglect in the past. The tee boxes are good, a little bumpy but not unusable. The fairways are good, some bare spots, and place that are under repair, nothing that effected play or would cause club damage. The rough was thick, and I lost 4 balls during the round do to a poor hit into it. The greens were my only complaint for the round, it appears that the overseed for the fringe ended up on the green and you had small tight clumps of grass spread about. Made putting difficult at times.
The course layout is fun, offers some challange and rewards shot placement and consideration for your next shot. There is a few sand traps and a little bit of water down the fairways. Most of the greens are unprotected, making for a easy approach shot.
I will be back to the course again, and make it one of my regular rounds.
My recommendation for the course, please add water stations on the course, plenty of trash cans, but no water. And please repair the bathroom on the back nine it was in ill repair, dark, low water pressure and a broken toilet.
Not up to Par
There were no Marshall’s present on first tee. Golfers stacked up at first tee. The group we were tagged with took off without waiting for us to join. Play was very slow and course conditions were not good with bare patches, small greens that were difficult to hold greens on approach shots. Simply a free for all with minimum over sight. One golfer was hurt in front of us from their cart ejecting a golfer that cut his leg badly on the signature hole due to the steep cart path and hairpin turn. Could have been worse.
Diamond in the Rough
Not terrible but needs work. Most greens are hard & fast but need better greenery. Fairwaysused to be immaculate on this course but need attention, difficult to see difference from fairway vs rough from a distance especially if ur unfamiliar w the course. But still a very challenging (torturing) & fun course. I'll be back for more!
I thought the course was nice for the price I was paying and I was surprised with the view and how some of the holes were. I definitely would go back again.
It’s getting better!
I last played Colovista more than a year ago. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much, but they’ve come a long way. The greens were in great shape, fairways looked good, tee boxes were fine. The course layout (mostly the back) is excellent and presents some good challenges. You’re getting what you’re paying for. It’s not Star Ranch or Forest Creek, but it’s also half the cost.
My only criticism is this: I booked a single tee time with wide open times both before and after on a Sunday. When I checked in, I mentioned that my wife was riding just to get some air. She’s not a golfer, wasn’t dressed for it and had elbow surgery a few months ago. None of that mattered. Instead of a rider fee, I had to pay for a second tee time. What kind of crap is that??
Don’t do it
Worst cart paths I have ever seen……and tee boxes.
Front nine fairways and layout boring ….not in good shape. Really to be honest they are poor.
Back nine totally different layout different layout Has potential if someone would spend some money.
I feel sorry for the members!!!!
I will never go back
Only redeeming quality was the condition of the greens.
Not worth the drive
Worst cart paths I have ever seen. Tee boxes as well
Front nine boring and need lots of love. Back nine totally different layout….it could be something.
Will not play again
Only positive are the greens.
Don't do it!
Really really really bad. Not worth spending a dime here. Go to literally any other course anywhere. Worst conditions i've ever seen. For real - go to pine forest or lockhart state park, this place should be paying you to play.
Rough
Couldn't tell where the fairway starts/ended. Greens where surprisingly good considering the rest of the course.
Thank you for playing ColoVista during our 2024 Restoration. We are sorry that you did not have a better experience and welcome all constructive criticism. With that being said we do not feel all your comments are accurate. First, we agree our greens are great and we continually get comments that they are some of the best public course greens in central Texas. Thank you for the positive review on the greens. Second, we agree that our fairways are not perfect but to describe it as “couldn’t tell where fairways start/ended” is simply not accurate when 95% of the course has good grass coverage and we mow the fairways at .6” with the rough at 1.75”. It also should be noted that outside of each holes designed play area, it very well may be hard to play from as we are letting Mother Nature takes it course in all native areas and some those do get very sandy. Finally, we are constantly resodding/seeding the remaining trouble areas so the course is getting better everyday.
