Llano River Golf Course

About
Llano River Golf Course has the wonderful distinction of being laid out along the scenic Llano River, with beautiful views and great golf. This course should be a must-play anytime you’re touring through the immediate area.
In addition to the scenery, the most memorable feature of this course is the tiny, postage-stamp-sized greens that require pinpoint accuracy and a solid short game for pars. In fact, these well-manicured greens compare favorably to the tricky burial mound greens of Alpine and Marfa, and are surely some of the smallest targets in the state.
Mature trees line the fairways, and water hazards come into play on only three holes.
The best birdie opportunity is the short, par 5 13th hole, playing only 437 yards. Good golfers can get there in two and give it a roll at an eagle putt. The ender is talked about as the signature, a difficult 502-yard par 5 with out-of-bounds along the left as well as behind the green.
Getting there : In Llano turn left on the north side of the courthouse and head out to the course.

Once was enough for me!
Small greens, mostly elevated, sand traps are rough grass, fairways in poor condition. We paid $26.02 each for 3 players for a so called "Hot Deal" on Golf Now, but the standard daily senior rate is only $20 at the course. What the heck?
Needs help
The front 9 on the course is much better than the back. Most of the course you are driving toward another t box making rogue shots sketchy. It’s flat and the grass was brown, dead or it was hard pan dirt spots. They don’t seed or water int eh winter I guess but the t boxes were pretty trashed and it was a dust bowl. It was a Sunday and there were multiple 5somes which was odd but didn’t impact pace of play too much. The staff was awesome super friendly. Not sure I would go back on spring but for the price I paid it wasn’t horrible.
Fun
This course is a really nice public golf course with awesome views and great greens
Helpful staff
If you haven’t played Llano in a few years, things have changed for the better. They have changed a few holes so it may be a bit challenging to navigate to a couple of holes but it has beautiful river views on many of the holes. It was winter conditions, so the grass is brown on the fairways, but the greens are in good shape. It has an eclectic group of golfers with a casual friendly atmosphere and the staff is very helpful and welcoming. Hit it straight and the ball rolls a loooong way! Fun day with friends!
Hole in one
It was a busy day as the weather for a January day was beautiful. We were a twosome between a 4 and 5 ball. The pace of play was eratic but my hole in one on # 8 was the highlight of the round. As always enjoyed the day out with a good friend.
Incredible greens!
I'll get the bad stuff out of the way first. The course has an unusual routing that makes it hard to follow the first time you play it. I got lost twice while making my round. Some more signage would be handy. The 13th and 18th play right next to each other. It is really easy to play down the wrong fairway. (Maybe plant a few trees between the two holes to delineate them better?)
Plus, the course is in the process of reversing the routing so if you use an app on your phone to follow the course, and it hasn't been updated, you could end up thinking you're playing the par-5 10th hole instead of the par-4 1st. And, if you pipe one down the 1st fairway too far, you could end up under the trees that guard the green where you'll have almost no shot at the green. (Want to guess how I know that?)
There are a couple of blind shots (which is a pet peeve of mine). Especially the approach on the 3rd hole if you don't get your tee shot in the right spot (which can be hard if you don't know the course).
As for the good stuff, the course routing is interesting. It's not an overly long course (just over 6200 yards from the tips) but you are expected to hit a variety of shots off the tee and on approaches. The tee shot on the 15th is a particular challenge if you cannot hit a fade off the tee.
The par-3s are of widely varying lengths, something you don't see at a lot of courses.
The par-5s are on the shorter side, but you still have to hit good shots to have a chance at making birdies or eagles.
The crown jewel of this course, though, is its collection of greens. They were some of the best I've putted on anywhere that wasn't a country club. I played in January! I don't know what the superintendent is doing out there, but whatever it is, I wish he were doing it at all the greens in 100 miles radius of Austin. The greens rolled very true and had just the right pace for the undulations. Putting at Llano River is a pleasure that is worth the drive from Austin.
My overall rating for this course is much higher than it would be if the greens were as bad as some places I've seen.
I'm looking forward to playing this course in the summer when the fairways are green and (hopefully) as well maintained as the greens.
Great greens and beautiful layout
Terrific Hill Country golf course. Greens are special and the views on many holes facing or along the Llano River are, indeed, beautiful. Staff very professional and engaging. Highly recommend this course. Plus it is great value for the money. Will play it much more often.
Great Hill Country track
Greens were great, fairways what you would expect for winter golf. The layout of this course is fantastic. There are a a lot of risk reward holes and great vistas. Front nine is very challenging, small greens and pinpoint tee shots. You really don't need to hit driver at all on the front, but it's hard not to want to. The back nine opens up and gives you an opportunity to let the big dog eat a little. One of my favorite Hill Country courses. Don't go there expecting resort quality, you will be disappointed. But, you aren't paying near resort prices either. Go there for a challenge and enjoy a nice Hill Country drive.
Friendly Staff and golfers
Enjoyed it very much. Everyone I saw at the course, (staff and Players) were extremely nice. Enjoyed the course. Only issue I had were the tee boxes were a little rough. But with that being said, I can't wait to tee it up there again soon
Worth the drive!
Played with the family yesterday and we had a great time! Greens were perfect, fairways good for this time of year. Tees were okay but that’s to be expected in December. People were super friendly and helpful. Loved the layout although a little dangerous in a couple of places. Definitely worth the hour drive from Leander. We will be back!
Great course!
I'm a hack golfer and loved the casual, laid-back atmosphere. No snobbish attitude or rushed play like lots of courses. The course was challenging but not overwhelming and in great condition. Definitely looking forward to going back!
Great golf outing
Llano river has been transformed into a must play in the country. The greens are in spectacular condition and the scenery along the Llano river is beautiful.
Scott in the clubhouse was welcoming and friendly. My day was about as peaceful as golf gets .
