Kino Springs Golf Course

About
Surrounded by acres of gently rolling hills studded with native mesquite and oak trees, Kino Springs Golf Course has a stunning location along the Santa Cruz River. Savvy birdwatchers know that it's a major flyway where you can see flycatchers, orioles, kingfishers, and grey hawks. The course is part of the historic Estancia Yerba Buena Ranch, which has hosted an impressive guest list over the years that includes John Wayne and Elizabeth Taylor. The golf course is player friendly enough for beginners but it has enough risk-reward opportunities to appeal to low handicappers. The opening holes play across open meadows but by the fifth hole you'll find yourself in canyon country. Mature pine trees frame Kino Springs Golf Course's last five holes but the views from the elevated tees stretch past the treetops to the scenic river.

Kino
Fairways and greens Good cart paths and golf cars substandard, clubs fell off cart twice
Hidden Gem
It had been a few months since playing Kino, so I was looking forward to seeing the conditions of the course. The fairways were in excellent shape while greens were great and not overly fast except for downhill putts. I was impressed with course conditions since Kino conditions can change given the weather...hot or cold. I highly recommend getting out to play the course.
Fairways and Greens Good
I've played this course a number of times and I have to say it's consistent. They do a great job with what they have. What they have is an extremely picturesque setting and a great layout. The fairways are good and the greens roll great! This is only time I've played there when the pace of play was a problem, but I think it was because of slow players back to back which doesn't happen often. I'd love to play it again!
A hidden gem providing a nice challenge for the price
At first glance you might say "doesn't look like a course I want to play". Initially appears unassuming and nothing special. But, once you head out to the course you find some very challenging holes that test your risk/reward mentality. Very good challenging experience for the price.
Have played here since 1992
Have always enjoyed this course and the conditions are always good to excellent. Rated good this time as the grass in the approach areas to the greens was splotchy, sand traps were on the hard side and saw only one water cooler available to drink or clean clubs with.
greens
Some of the greens are in poor great condition./ Some have multiple bare spots, thus don't hold well especially when if pin placements are barely regulation in terms of closeness to fringe. The green crew often places a new hole close to an old hole that has not settled and negatively affects putting. Otherwise this is a great course for the value. Staff is very friendly and helpful.
Historic and scenic
Must appreciate the history of this property previously owned by movie stars (and husband and wife) Stewart Granger and Jean Simmons. Their best friend, John Wayne, stayed and played here. Funky buildings from their era and a course designed to combine valley flats and rolling foothills holes. Really fun to play out in a rustic setting. No pretentious staff or manicured setting. Real old school golf.
Beautiful
Our favorite course. Beautiful views. Excellent shape.
Great round at Kino
Course is well worth the price of admission! Greens are in nice shape. Grounds crew was respectful of our group while we played. Overall great layout and extremely fun course.
Greens were fast and in good shape. Fairways were well groomed. Awesome views along the Mexico border.
Kino Springs
Nice course and well maintained. Good value for the price. Recommended to everyone!
Love this course!
This is one of our all time favorite courses! We love the layout and the history of the course!
Very Challenging Course
Course in very nice condition. Greens are the quickest I've played in along time and for this time of year that says allot. Had my 1st Hole-In-One on the 12th hole! Will look forward to returning soon.
Very nice views and land shape
We enjoyed our day at Kino Springs.
The course was in good shape. The staff is friendly and helpful.
Course needs some TLC
I was hoping for better conditions since we've been in the monsoon season, however the course showed some stress. Greens were showing some infestations of grass not normally there, which made the greens much slower than I recall and bumpy. Putting lines were a total guess. Fairways had generally filled in with grass, however there were many patchy spots, which made some lies a real challenge. Tee boxes were rough and in some cases hard to find grass. I'm not sure if the course is having budget problems, but course maintenance needs to be improved. Kino Springs has been one of my favorite "hidden" gems for golf, but honestly I was a little disappointed in the playing conditions this last time. Hopefully conditions will improve.
pleasantly surprised
With over an hour's drive to get there, I was really taking a chance. ( especially with a couple of previous reviews )
The drive to Sonoita, and through Patagonia is relaxing and beautiful. I was lucky, in that the weather was unusually cooler and overcast. ( usually, this time of year , it's well into the 100's, with a unrelenting sun.) My round...it never got over 80 degrees!
Anyway, I found the course...a lot of fun! Nearly every hole was elevated , either tee box or green. The fairways were a bit ( rough )...but unless you're a scratch golfer, and a stickler for "play it as it lies"...move it to a better piece of turf. I was here to have fun , after all.
The course offered a change from the norm, in that a lot of fairways had extreme undulation right after your tee shot. I know that after playing my first round here , additional rounds I might choose a different club, rather than just trying to bomb every tee shot over the large dips. ( like I said , fun. )
Other than the fairway condition , the boxes and greens were pretty good. The beauty of the rolling hills and desert was great, also. Cart girl was never far away , and friendly.
So, if you're looking for a course that's unpretentious , with beauty to boot....give it a try. I'll go back.
Thanks for your review! We're happy you had a relaxing drive out here and enjoyed the scenic views along the way and at the course. Please come back and play again soon!
Do not play here
Played this course 4-5 years ago and it was decent with much wonderful history and surrounding beauty. Just played it on July 10th with a friend. It appears perhaps it may have been sold or changed management because it is being ruined. The old historic buildings which were once part of a famous ranch are in shambles with the old resort a wreck. The course is awful...mostly hard pan fairways, uneven greens, potholed and eroded cart paths. What a shame as this course and property has so much potential. The owners obviously couldn't care less. A $10 greens fee is still too much to pay. The so-called club house bar is a joke. Almost seems like whoever owns it is intentionally letting it go to write off a loss. I don't recommend golfing here at any price.
we are sorry that you were disappointed with your round and day here with us. we want to apologize for the bad conditions and can assure you that we are working to constantly improve them each day! we hope that you would give us another shot to exceed your expectations of us and 'wow' you!
sincerely,

Kino Springs
Kino Springs is a challenging, fun course surrounded by peace, quiet and beauty.
During the summer there is significantly less play than at other times, which makes it very appealing to me and my friends. The Friday fish fry is wonderful.
Will probably play Kino at least a half dozen times during the summer and into October.
Hey there Reddogg88 -
Thanks for playing your round with us and caring enough to give us a raving 4 star review!! We are over the moon to hear that you like us so much! We look forward to your next booked round!

Hey Golfers and especially progolfer16, I'm sorry that the course isn't what you're used to but rest assured we are working our butts off getting it back. Over-seeding went pretty well and really working on the greens. It's very playable now and will continue to get it up to "birdie" standards. Sorry for the bad experience Progolfer16. You know how to contact me and urge you to do so. Thanks kids...Keith Mundy, Dir of Golf.
Thank you for your feedback. We are always looking to improve course conditions and take your comments very seriously. Look forward to having you back soon and making up for this experience.
