Good Muni Course
Not the hardest course but a very good municipal golf course. The course is well maintained, with the greens, tees, and fairways in great shape. However, the condition of the bunkers were mixed, with some having new sand but most having almost no sand at all. I will be playing this course again.
This course is ok, for the price.
This course is an ok value if you are looking to go out and work on a few shots on your golf game. The greens are in pretty bad condition so this is not a place to work on your putting skills. With that said however there are not many places on this course where you can't take a shot, even if you end up in the trees.
In Good Shape for a Muni
Algonkian is set on a regional park, which is nice because it is isolated and there are no houses around. That also makes for a scenic golf course with lots of wildlife - lots of deer and even a fox. The starter (check in with starter first) was very friendly and made us feel welcome. Pro shop staff was less so and either ignored or didn't recognize my Golfnow rate (which I didn't realize until after the round) so I paid more than I should have. Elevated driving range from mats, but the mats are in good shape and you might hit a deer grazing in the range if you're not careful! The course is rather tight, and a lot of the holes are straight-away and basically back and forth in parallel (this the photos all look like the same hole. That could be dangerous, but there are plenty of mature trees between all the holes to keep errant balls from becoming missiles to the other fairways. Said errant balls can usually be found, so practice your knock-down 3-iron shots on the range... unless you are deadly straight off the tee box, you will use that shot often. Tee boxes were mostly in good shape, as were the fairways - nothing to really complain about for a municipal course. The greens were soft and held the balls well, so you can be a bit aggressive but, perhaps because they were soft, putts didn't always roll true and the break was less than expected, but any such trouble was difficult to identify. One thing I noticed was that the players respected the course, as most all ball marks were repaired and divots filled... rarely have I seen that even in high-dollar courses. A nice course, but the $63 rate (with cart) is a bit pricey for the area. Still. it is a good course that is reasonably challenging. I would play it again, and the wife liked it, but would put a price tag of $50 or less on it as there are other courses that play better for the current price.
Enjoy course
Have played course for years. Long course but we like it. Only complaint that I discussed with management. Don's john on front nine is disgusting. Need to have a new, more modern Don's John. I think this has been there for at least 20 years, as long as I have been playing golf. At the very, very least it needs to be cleaned. Did not even look at one on back nine. Otherwise, I would recommend course.
Staff very accommodating
My Dad had his 84th birthday the day we golfed. Even though he can't swing long, I took him so he could putt for me. When I told the starter my plans - they put a Handicapped flag on our golf cart so I could drive Dad up to the greens.
Pops tired after about 5 holes - and we continued as an active threesome from then on. He enjoyed the course - saw plenty of Deer and even a friendly Fox came up to the golf cart.
Not asking to be accommodated for my Dads weak legs, and the starter offering on his own, was a memory that will be repeatedly spoken about often.
I plan on continuing to play the course - often.
Thanks for a great birthday for my Dad.
Tim
Sorry I waited so long to try this course.
Really enjoyed playing this course. Very well maintained with super fast greens. Can't wait to get back out there.
Great course
Great course for the money. Excellent condition for amount of play.
This course was in great shape
I played this course sunday afternoon and it was not busy at all. Pace of play was pretty decent and so was the golf course.
Nice muni course
Easy course and well maintained. Suitable for beginner. We played from the back tee but did not feel like it was too long for us.
A challeging course in excellent condition. Abundant wildlife and nicely isolated from any housing.
This is a well-maintained and managed course in the midst of parkland along the Potomac River. Very relaxing with no houses in sight. Abundant wildlife is often seen, adding to the charm of the place. Course is challenging (especially the back nine), but playable for all levels with relatively wide fairways and moderate hazards. There's plenty of length for long hitters. Nice practice green and driving range. The pro-shop staff is bland, but the starters are friendly and flexible. Play can be a bit slow, but no more so that most popular public courses. All-in-all a pleasant place to tee it up.
Nice but needs watering.
Greens in good shape
Fairways were average but needed water
Rough was badly dried out. Obvious that sprinklers do not cover them as they were hard as a rock.
Could be really nice course if they figure out how to water better.
Nice course, generally good conditions. Bunkers below average in some places.
I must have run in to the the rude starter that another reviewer mentioned. I arrived at 3:32 for a 3:30 tee time, The starter asked if I knew what time it was. There was not many people on the course and only one person in the first tee box who I joined. (He was a walk on, I had a reservation). Is this bad treatment of good customers neccesary ? Played the front 9 in well uder two hours, then a person came up and asked if I was playing 9 or 18. I said 18 only to find a slow group of walking older golfers that were put on the back 9 ahead of me. This slowed my back 9 to almost 3 hours as 3 or 4 groups waited for the slow group that had 3 open holes in front of them. No marshalls around to move things along. Too bad...
Traditional design, short and forgiving
Traditional design, forgiving off the tees and short good beginners aswell as better players greens and sand traps not well maintained
What you see is what you get
Straightforward (literally) but awesome for the mid handicapper. Tree lined fairways with limited OB allows erratic ball strikers to take their punishment on punch outs instead of being OB.
Good value for money
They have a starter with an obnoxious attitude and behavior that is hostile. I played with 2 other gentlemen (not known to me) who also encountered the same behavior. I play golf to relax but this starter's unwelcoming comments increased my stress level.
Nice Course
I have played this course multiple times and it is quite challenging for the average golfer. Only downside is slow play on the weekends and while the staff is very nice, they aren't doing anything to keep play on pace. You have to hit it long and straight to score well. If you don't hit it long, move up to the next tee box it will make your round much more enjoyable as well as keep pace of play.
Course is flat, easy to walk
While the pace of play was a little slow for mid-week, we had a very enjoyable time at Algonkian. The course is flat with a few water hazards and many trees. Keep your ball in the fairway and your round is easy. Trees line most of the fairways making this a beautiful course to play. Greens in good shape.
A fair course for the average player
This course all lays out in front of you. Open tree lined fairways with plenty of room to be offline a little. Greens were in nice shape. The wildlife is all over the course. If you see one deer you will see one hundred. The pace of play was nice, 18 holes in 4 hours.
Long and Narrow makes for challenging game
Course is well maintained. Satff are very friendly and helpful. If you want a challenging game try Algonkian. You need to hit the ball long and straight.
good for the money
This is my favorite of the 3 municipal NoVA courses. Overall it looks as though the course is maintained fairly well. Bunkers could have new sand, but otherwise for the price I would say it is an acceptable value for the money.
I would not call this course short. I would say a bit tough for beginners because many holes on front 9 have narrow tree lined fairways( although you can easily find your ball and knock it back on the fairwayl. The par 3's are not the easy either since 3 of the 4 can play 190 yds or more.
