great course
great course, great weather, another party joined us
Rather long for a Regional Park course.
The course was in good shape and the pace of play was good. The marshalls were seen a couple of time during the round which meant they were doing their job keeping pace of play where it should be.
The course
For $63 I expected a much better course! For a public course it is ok at best, this course is a mosquito feast on your face...poor experience...
Longish and rewards good shots
Algonkian is longer than some local courses and straight forward if you stay in the fairways. Rough is short but so lush that it's very easy to loose the ball. Deer regularly cross the fairway and the setting is tranquil. The greens were in very good condition and the fairways were as well. Well worth the price!
Decent place to play
Algonkian is a typical municipal course. The greens are in pretty good shape, the fairways are in decent shape, and the rough could use some grass seed/weed killer. The biggest attraction for me is that is located just 2 miles from my house. The biggest weakness of the course is that it is a little boring. It is built on very flat ground, there are very few undulating hills, etc. It is also worth noting that the course is nearly always busy, even on weekdays, so if playing fast is your goal, call ahead.
.
Parkland course, that is likely to be much nicer, later in the season - too early to tell.
Course is in bad repair right now
I typically play this course 4-5 times per year. And while I realize it is very early in the season, the course is in pretty bad shape. Several of the large trees on the property have come down over the winter and many are still where they came to rest. This has contributed to lots of small branches and associated debris on the fairway edges and throughout the rough. The greens have just been aerated, and the fairways are about 65/35 green/brown right now. With a little warm weather, this course will get its usual green color back quickly. Staff is hit or miss...super nice @ check-in, so-so at the lunch counter, curmudgeonly @ the starter's booth. Give it a couple of weeks before you try to play this course...hopefully, they will have it cleaned up by then.
Even for January, greens were in good shape. Tees for par 3's are closed for winter. Pretty flat, some water in play.
Even for January, greens were in good shape. Tees for par 3's are closed for winter. Most holes are straight, but choice is needed for approach to greens. Nice setting in a regional park.
Good basic golf especially for a public municipal course
Nice parkland course with good conditions. Blue and white tees are long, both over 6500 yards. Needs to have another set of tees between the whites and golds which are 5690. Very flat with most holes straight and a few doglegs. Not much trouble (no fairway bunkers and few water hazards) so a good course for beginners, not for low handicappers. Greens were soft and receptive. Overall, our group enjoyed the round although the back nine was very slow.
Long, Straight, Flat
As this course is situated on a relatively small plot of land along the Potomac, the landscape is very flat and the holes are lined up next to each other. To add a challenge, the course plays noticeably longer than any course in the area.
You have to hit your tee shots straight and long on this course or you will be in for a long round. That may be why the course plays slow as well. And while you're waiting, be sure to apply bug spray or you might get eaten alive.
That said, the course is well-maintained, the staff is friendly, and the prices are fair. If you hit it long and straight you might like this course, otherwise it can range from frustrating to completely forgettable.
At this time of year the price was ok, could have been a few dollars less.
Overall, I enjoyed the experience and will go back again.
Pleasantly surprised.
I had wanted to play this course for some time and was pleasantly surprised by the conditions and layout. We were initially stuck behind an impossibly slow foursome, but they finally let us play through after four holes and it was smooth sailing after that. Very straightforward course, no gimmicks, but still a challenge (at least to me) and a lot of fun.
Play this couse alot and wouldn't if wasn't a fair and fun tract well maintained
I play this couse alot and wouldn't if it wasn't a fair and fun tract well maintained. Personnel are always competent, helpful and friendly.
Should be better with recent rain
I enjoy this course and the pace of play has been good the last three rounds. The roughs were a bit a on the dry side the last time I played which made it difficult to get any spin on the ball. Tees and greens were in good shape.
In a word - Boring
This is one of the most boring courses I have ever played. The course is long, flat and straight for the most part. It is overrun with deer, and walking golfers who keep the pace of play VERY slow. It is very easy to shoot a ball into the fairway of a hole adjacent to the one you're playing. It's mostly back and forth and back again. The fairway grass is more like brillo and it is easy to dig divots in. It also doesn't allow much run for your balls once they hit the ground. The sand traps appear to be in the process of revision to white sand. That would be a big plus since the red, sand/clay mix in the majority of sand traps turns to really nasty mud that can stain good golf shoes if you play after it's rained.
