The 14th - a nice short par 3 with a tricky green. Photo submitted by GolferJake78 on 03/01/2019

Golfer Reviews
Tee boxes need some attention
Overall, the course fairways and greens were in good shape. Pace of play was ok, we finished 18 holes in 4 hours. Staff is friendly and responsive. The only criticism would be that several tee boxes were in bad shape. Large grass less area and it was tough to find even footing.
Over-priced and not well tended to.
This course re-did several tee boxes last year, and yet probably 6-7/18 look like they should be shut down for re-work (un-leveled, too many divots to get a clean place to hit, dirt patches, etc). Puzzling that at the height of the season, the grounds team doesn't either close boxes and/or set up temp ones so that they can keep the boxes in good working order.
Also, the greens are ~5/10. Close to 40-50% of them contain "dead" areas where the grass is gone and there's just dirt/mud. Not sure if the grounds team cuts too finely or what is contributing to that.
For a week-day rate of say $50 maybe you just deal with it. But for $70 week-day, and then $80+ on the weekend, this course doesn't pass muster.
Lastly, there is a gnat/bug issue which is annoying but bearable.
Returning golfer
I’ve returned to play Herndon after a year or so since the last time I played they were renovating the tee boxes. I’m not sure what they accomplished because they are in atrocious shape. Some greens have dirt on them. I used to love playing Herndon but over the years the quality has gone severely downhill. Wouldn’t recommend to any serious golfer. Maryland continues to outshine Northern Virginia golf. Don’t waste your time or money!!
Really enjoyed playing the course. I knew the course because I grew up playing at the course. Also, the staff are very friendly and helpful.
Why I will not ever play Herndon again
Herndon is notoriously known for its horrible pace of play and the absence of marshaling players pace.
I had a 9:39 tee time but thestarter called my group to leave more than 10 minutes sooner. I did not hear the starter and my group left without me. Starter admitted he was probably not loud enough for everyone to hear.
I waited an hour and joined another group. On the first hole an elderly lady in front of us decided to leave her cart and walk the entire hole taking 50 yards per shot. This took more than an extra 20 minutes. Ditto #2. Where was a marshal at Hole #1?
After playing the front 9, While we waited at the 10th tee box two elderly players left the restaurant and got in front of us. Their mobility was extremely poor and could not advance their balls at all. This is when I decided to quit and leave even though I paid for 18 holes.
Fantastic course!
Incredible course, layout, and conditions. The staff is extremely welcoming and friendly. Highly recommend this course!!!
Not a bad course
Course was in good shape despite golfers not helping the greens keepers with divots and pitch marks. Fun layout bunkers have more sand than you think which was a pleasant surprise. Grass on the tee boxes were too long. Careful on hole 18 because the driving range is only about 250 yards away so there are lots of range balls where you should be hitting your second shot. Rental clubs were only $25 which was fair considering they were below average and the driver had dents in the sole and I couldn’t hit it over 230 yards (usually 290 with my own). Pace of play was okay was a Saturday afternoon with lots of people. There was no marshal keeping pace of play and the beer cart only came once on hole 3.
Back 9 was PGA quality
The Back 9 provides the perfect PGA experience for an after work adventure.
Not very friendly staff
Single player riding, but the staff insisted on sharing a cart with another player unless I pay additional $22. In the meantime, we only had 3 players teed up, and one of them ride solo. Wish they explained the situation and two of us to share the card instead of having 3 carts, and I would have been OK with that. Their tone was very rude.
