Port Royal Golf Course
About
Located on the shorefront of Southampton Parish, the Port Royal Golf Course is one of the most frequented public golf courses in Bermuda and it is even known as being one of Jack Nicklaus' favorites. Robert Trent Jones designed this 18-hole course, which hosts the Bermuda Open Championship every year. Doglegs and wind are just some of the factors that will challenge golfers on this course. The signature hole is the scenic and rather infamous 16th, situated precariously atop craggy cliffs that overlook the Atlantic Ocean. The hole requires a nearly perfect shot in order to reach the green. Port Royal Golf Course has garnered such a following that some golfers reserve starting time a year in advance.

Grand Slam of Golf... What else needs to be said.
Play was fast. Course was in good condition. There were many holes that didnt require driver, but this being my first time to play this course, I didn't know. Ended up in a lot of trouble off the tees due to no course knowledge. Greens were in great condition for middle of summer. The views were incredible. I can't say I've ever seen water that color. Would play again on any trip back to Bermuda.
Challenging course with spectacular scenery
This course was easily the most challenging I've ever played. Numerous elevation changes and tricky greens. The course demands accuracy and requires excellent long iron play. The views are unbelievable and the design is excellent. I was disappointed the course was cart path only four months before the PGA plays there but overall it was a great experience.
Can't Wait to go Back
Played the course while on a cruise to the island recently,
I have to say that it was one of my greatest golfing experiences to date and I've been playing 20+ years.
the greens have come back nicely from being aerated recently, but the fairways and rough do still show some signs, but not enough to interfere with my game. The views and course alone made for a great day. i shot 5 over my handicap and walked away with a great feeling of accomplishment.. Put this on your "Bucket list" i put it back on mine as a definite repeat if i ever get the chance.
The Taxi driver on the way there gave me good advice. He asked what tees I would be playing (Blue) he told me if i wasn't being pushed to hit from the black tee on 16 for a thrill. He was right, it's a entirely different hole at 237yds with a breeze off the ocean. I'm proud to say i hit the green and parred both the blue (180) and black, that alone made my day!
Excellent views, extremely challenging course
Maybe the greatest golf course I've ever played as far as views. The course was very difficult, especially since my group played from the blacks (tips). I would recommend if you are a 8+ handicap than playing from the blues. Having 2 par 3s at 235 yards is almost not fair. The course was a little dry, but I heard playing in June is not ideal.
Super views
A great course, pretty, maintained, ocean views abound. Friendly, helpful staff.
Extremely challenging
I loved this course from tee to green, beautiful scenery which is typical of Bermuda. However, they aerated the greens two weeks ago and never mentioned when I booked. It really changes your mindset when you play a course which has been aerated. I was dissapointed.
This Course Has All The Wow Factor
Had the opportunity to play Port Royal on May 23rd. Unfortunately the greens had been aerated the previous week and were quite bumpy. None the less the experience is unforgetable. The course is not very long but is very hilly and has plenty of sand to negoiate. As others have mentioned the first 5 or 6 holes while pretty, pale in comparison to the last 12. The challenges are magnified by the views of the ocean setting and it's distractions. It's not cheap to play but i would do it again in a heartbeat.
Course is picturesque overlooking Bermuda waters.
Employees went above and beyond especially Andrew. We would definitely play the course again.
Course conditions
The golf course itself was very good. The layout and design was above average. The first 7 holes were rather routine, but from 8 through 18 the course was very good. Especially hole 16 from the back tees was exceptional.
However, the course had just been top dressed and covered with sand. While the daily fee was reduced to $100 per person, the conditions of the greens took a great deal away fomr the golf course. I would like to play there again when the greens are in normal conditions.
This course needs work...
Bermuda is beautiful everywhere, but this course needs help and the fact that it is very hilly with a cart path ONLY sign doesn't help either.
Great layout, driver won't carrt the day on this course.
Course was as beautiful as the reviews had indicated. The driver should be used with care, what looks like a good driver from the tee ends up thru fairways. Fair but challenging course.
With that being said it was a little disappointing that day-----aeration and top dressing of all tees and green made round a bit frustrating. Understandably. good conditions need maintenance.
Great test!!
Played the course twice while in Bermuda. It is a championship course. Course was in good condition for this time of year. Some very good holes. No easy birdies. Cannot wait to watch the PGA Grand Slam this Fall.
Must play course; ease in to the front nine as a warm up for the signature holes on the back nine
Other than some attention to the greens required it was a great course to play. Remember to stop and take in the views all around, including the Whale Bay 19th century fort. Immaculately prepared fairways and course through the green.
A very tough course - especially when the wind blows
It has been close to 10 years since I last played Port Royal and, in that time, a substantial amount of money has been spent to bring it up the standard required to hold the PGA Grand Slam here. The most notable changes are ultra-fast greens and numerous bunkers - it is a far more challenging course as a consequence. Factor in gale force winds on holes 8-18 yesterday and, on such days, the course has plenty of teeth! I have played in the wind at links courses in the UK, but they tend to be lightly bunkered and watered, letting the terrain and elements be the test - the issue at Port Royal seems to be US-style bunkering, some hits over water, rock hard, fast greens and several uphill second shots to greens on the back nine (not to mention the famous par 3 16th that requires a hit over a cove to a green on a headland), coupled with the howling wind means that bump and run or low pitches are not an option on many holes. Unless you are a great manipulator of the ball, a master in the wind (realistically a very low handicapper - I used to play off 8 and am reconstructing my game after several months off, but it was more than I could manage), on most second shots the chances of stopping a ball on the green on holes 8-18 were remote. As a corollary, you need to be good out of bunkers (I am decent enough, so that was a saving grace at least), as you are likely to get plenty of practice.
I enjoyed the challenge, but not my final score! I will definitely go back (it is a great course, well kept and with helpful staff), but I will wait for a day when the wind is not quite so violent, as the set up of the course does not lend itself, in very windy conditions, to giving the average to good golfers a fair chance of playing even close to their handicaps.
One thing I would comment on is that, given its fame now, the course needs better marshalling - many tourists feel the need to stop to take photos (the views on the back nine are indeed stunning, but please consider those playing behind) - to keep play moving. It was close to 5 hours for a round on a Sunday, which is simply too long.
Bring your A game!
When you look at the scorecard you think short course. Remember the wind will make this course very difficult, most days it comes out of the south off the ocean at anywhere from 15-40 mph. Greens run at about 10. quick but true, subtle breaks.
This is a must play, period.
Very Beautiful and challenging golf course
The staff was incredible. It is a place I would play again because the people were so nice.
This course is a beautiful golf course.
The course is challenging and in pristine condition, but overpriced. After 3:00 the course was $110.00 but before $180.00 even though the course was virtually empty of players at 11:00 in the morning. I played as a single and felt that the premium price was not warranted. The course may get more play with more reasonable prices.
Great course in very good condition, over-priced
Great course in very good condition, over-priced, would go again if on special
Beautiful, tough and very scenic golf course
This course is extremely hilly with stunning scenery of the coast line. It is a tough course that plays very long. It is not for beginner golfers unless they are looking for an extreme challenge.
