Golfer Reviews
Could be great
The course overall is nice. The bunkers are terrible. They have more rocks than sand. None of the tee boxes are level. If they fixed these two problems, it would be a perfect course.
Great Potential, Plagued by Pace of Play
I have been playing Camillus for several years, and it has always been a bit more expensive than other courses locally - which was largely justifiable until recently. Unfortunately, Camillus uses dynamic pricing, which is just an algorithm designed to charge you the maximum amount possible for any given tee time. It's dystopian and should be banned. For our Sunday morning foursome, the cost was $70 to play 18 with a cart, which places Camillus well above its peers locally. Our group was able to get off on time, and pace of play was great for the front 9, however, when we went to make the turn, suddenly there was a log jam on the 10th tee. This was surprising, since our group was the second group off the first tee, and there was only a twosome in front of us, and we had let a twosome behind us play through on hole 8. There was a long line on the first tee, and it appears that two groups of older men had decided they didn't want to wait and went off on 10 instead, cutting off everyone making the turn and backing up the rest of the course. One of these groups was a fivesome, further exacerbating the issue. We brought this issue to the attention of the pro shop, and they admitted they had let these groups go off on 10, but ultimately gave us a full refund, which I respect. Pace of play at Camillus on the weekend has been a consistent issue this season, the course would greatly benefit from having a starter to manage tee times. Instead, groups decide when they want to go off on their own, and tee times are not appropriately spaced out, inevitably leading to a congested golf course. This is excusable at smaller courses that charge less, but at the $70 price point, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect there to be a starter/ranger to enforce pace of play.
The course itself is a generally fun layout, marked by significant elevation changes from tee to green. Fairways are generally lush, although there are some minor drainage issues in places that can cause plugged balls, particularly in low-lying/flat areas. Rough is kept at a reasonable height, around 3 to 3-1/2". Greens run slightly faster than other courses locally, however, I have found speed doesn't feel consistent from green to green. Greens would greatly benefit from more aggressive cultural practices to incorporate more sand into the profile, as they generally play very soft on approach shots currently. The biggest gripe is likely the teeing surfaces - though it appears they are currently attempting to address this issue. Many of the tee boxes are uneven, typically crowned in the center. The tees are also quite narrow, which concentrates divots, and there is frequently very little fresh turf to strike from. To their credit, it appears they are currently flattening several tees and re-sodding. There is a beverage shack accessible at holes 6/12/15, in addition to the bar at the turn, which is great. Golf carts are modern gas carts, with upgraded bucket seats that are very comfortable. The clubhouse is modern, with a large banquet hall. There is a very small, narrow driving range and a decent sized putting green to warm up.
Overall, the course has great potential to be a premier venue in the Syracuse area, but needs to enforce better weekend pace of play and address a few issues with the course to justify the higher $70 price point.
Great course
The superintendent and his crew are doing great work on the course. It is always is great shape. I have noticed the 150 yd markers seem to be gone. The red ones for 100 yds ares still there. Extra gravel on the cart paths helps a lot. Evened out the tee box on #11 which is wonderful. I would like to see some additional tee boxes for senior women and kids. Most of the holes are too far to reach in regulation.... 300 yds might seem OK for a par 4, but the hills add yardage off the club, making it play longer. A senior woman or minor might hit a drive 150 yds, which is good, but they there is still another 150 yds to go, and that doesn't even take into account the hills.
Camilus country club
This golf course is always in great shape. The layout is challenging and fun. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I would recommend this course to anyone.
Great course
Enjoyed the course. Conditions were very good. Pace of play was normal.
Good Condition
We had a 10:20am tee time. Found the course in very good condition. Fairways were in good shape as were the green and they held approach shots very well. Pace of play was great for the first 5 holes then bogged down but still
Played in 4:10!
Enjoyable round!
nice day to play
The course was in very nice condition. pace of play was good right around 4 hrs. had a little lunch when we finished food was good. Greens putted well and were pretty consistent.
Better
Well CNY finally got some rain. The fairways were in great shape. Kudos to the Superintendent and crew for working on the tee boxes. Especially on #11 and #13. Nice sand in the bunker on #6 and #18 too (guess hwo I know about them.... ). Greens were lightning fast too. Wonder what is reason was for removing the 150 yd marker sticks though. But there are still the markers in the ground.
Camillus country club
Outstanding shape,,, greens were super fast and super true!
Camillus golf enjoyable
This course is laid out nicely and it really is a beautiful course. The fairways and greens are well maintained. The carts need some work but overall a great golf course fit the price. Pace of play was slow due to a bigger group of players than usual.
Great Course
The course is a lot of fun to play. The greens were very fast on the day that we played with some difficult pin placements. There are several blind shot holes which can be a challenge if your ball is not hit in the center of the fairway.
The cart paths need some attention, otherwise a great golf day.
always nice
I have played here many times and always in good conditions .Staff in pleasant and quick to help ,if needed. The only complaint I have is #1 green..If you are above the hole putting, and miss..Your off the green..If I get out of there with a bogey,I am happy...Very nice course for the money...
